I have tried a few times now to get past the gun ship trying to help Samara. Any tips on squad configuration and weapons. Got my Cain gun, but it takes so long to warm up and the gunship keeps moving, damn it!  I'm playing on casual (not a big insanity person).

Squad mates: Thane (warp + sniper rifle); Miranda (warp + pistol); Mordin (incinerate + pistol)

Weapon: Sniper rifle if you have the AP upgrade, or even if you don't since Sniper rifles have an armor multiplier. AP upgrade just makes it better. If you don't have a sniper rifle, then a pistol. Pistols also have an inherent AP modifier as well as an AP upgrade and a critical hit upgrade.

Powers: Incinerate, Warp, Incendiary ammo, AP ammo.

Added: If you want to try a heavy weapon, the missile launcher or grenade launcher might work out. So might the Arc Projector.

An insanity example of Thane+Miranda+Adept Shepard (Warp+AP ammo)

Soldier with adrenaline rush and incendiary ammo power using the revenant

Miranda with warp

Zaeed with inferno grenade

The gunship is destroyed within a few seconds

I've done it playing other classes and using other squadmates. But what I mentioned above is what I primarliy do if I decide to recruit Samara.

Go all Grunt/Jack on it and fearlessly run right towards it as quick as you can. There's a non-destructible spot of cover at the end of the balcony that you can hide behind and blow it away at your leisure. Adrenaline Rush, if a soldier, should get you there in plenty of time before your shields run out.

I usually run back to where I came from and stick behind cover shooting the gunship from behind the wall. It drops some mechs once in a while but you can simply backtrack and fight them without gunship firing at you

I've never seen it drop a 'mech once. Not once.

Every time it goes over to the area where you enter, it drops two Fenris mechs. Check out the above video at 1:11. You can actually see them dropping down.

Oh cool. Guess I just never paid attention.

It is likely your squad took care of them for you. They focus on the nearest enemy and those mechs are probably closer to them. As you can see in the above vid, Thane finished off one of them with his sniper rifle.

Yup, I guess so... I'm always focused on the damn gunship, heh. Kill it quick before it kills me.

Thanks guys - I ended up with the Cain. Waited for it to get inside, stood my ground, and gave it a nuke right in the face. No more gunship. Huzzah! :wizard:

Yeah the Soldier (Adrenaline Rush + Incendiary Ammo with Mattock) trivialises that fight. Even on Insanity.

It doesn't even get a chance to drop any mechs.

I never did like the Revenant though.

Soldier with Collector Beam + Adrenaline Rush makes quick work of the gunship. Squad mates w/ Warp/Incinerate/Inferno nades help a lot too.

Also as others mentioned above, incendiary cheese.

Soldier - AP ammo - Mattock/Widow. Never stood a chance :D

It'll be a bit more difficult with my current power-focused Destroyer Vanguard, but I guess that'll be nothing that keeping in cover and mosquito bites won't solve.

The coward way: hide behind the wall right in the entrance of the area. Position your squad where the gunship can't hit them. Then wait for the movement of the gunship, hitting it and running at every opportunity. As the gunship doesn't regenerate armor, it will go down eventually.
