Would you prefer to trade character and class choice for scabbards? I'm game if you are.

Right? Like, realism is fine in certain areas but I just cannot be asked to care about watching my character struggling with mundane leather straps all for the sake of "muh 'mersion."
At least it's better than in DA2. I think they managed to make them at least stuck closer to the body so there's not a weird air gap so that they're floating weapons...
NEXT GEN TECHNOLOGY.
The Witcher games were able to use sheaths because all your swords you can find or craft share the same basic shape and size, it's mostly only the hilts that set them apart. Because all of the swords share the same basic shape the devs didn't have to worry as much about clipping. The three DA games so far wouldn't have been able to do this because the different swords also vary greatly in size and shape.
Personally I wouldn't mind the next DA game going the route of the Witcher and having a basic two-hander and one-hander shape shape that all swords from that class must follow. But I'm wiling to accept some uniformity in exchange for sheaths. I'm not sure whether or not most fans would.
They would also have to model a different set for daggers as well. The one I'd be the most concerned about is the mage's staff. Like, is it just going to be a walking stick or will it hang off a leather strap or something?
Not every one can pull off Sheaths the witcher 2 assassin's of kings were real good can't wait for the the witcher 3 wildhunt
Iorveth in TW2 has a pretty cool sheathe for his bow
But it should go over the shoulder, yeah? Looks silly.
I know that sheath, it would put weight on the bottom of the bow and warp the wood. Carrying it over the shoulder like in the new Tomb Raider pulls the string and puts undo pressure on the bow. There is really is no way to carry a bow other than in your hand. And don't even get me started with how bad it is to keep a bow strung all the time.
TL;DR: Bows are like horses, people think you can do cool stuff with them but they're really inconveniently delicate.
It's a design choice - deal with it.
Personally, I think sheaths and scabbards are waste of resource and I'd much rather see the weapons I craft for my character than have them hidden away.
i have only seen 3 games do scabbards. and only two of them are worth noting...
middle earth shadows of mordor, and they look great but the dagger and long sword scabbard only work and look good because thats all you have the whole game! and the only other game to kind of find an interesting way to do it that works, surprisingly is Bound by Flame. yo uactually craft a bunch of different weapons in that game, and they found a decent balance in different types of weapons but they mostly all have a basic shape shared across all the weapon types. plus the bottom of the scabbard is open ended.
as far as the wicther goes, its the same thing as shadows of mordor.
for a game like DAI to make a scabbard for every weapon shape, and hooks for hammers and bows slung over your arm, it would probably take another two years dev time because you would be tailoring armor around it and dealing with the clipping of 3 different aspects of your character model.
so really, this way, "the magnetic way" is the only real, efficient way to do it.
This is what happens in real life. Try it.
because it doesn't make sense. in the real world long swords and war axes and that have to be taken off your back in the sheath then removed from the sheath because their too long for your arms to pull the up and out.
It's clumsy which is why people started carrying swords on their hips and any axe the coverings are stud locks you cannot physically remove it from the pouch or put it in the pouch without seeing what your doing.
a lot of the time the person wouldn't even carry their weapon having a servant carry it until its needed.
2H weapons all floaty like lol DAO and DA2 but 1 handed warrior weapons at least were on the hip but 2H all fly seams they are finding it hard to come up a decent mounting option for all 2H weapons I really hated cut scenes when you could see the weapons just floating in the older games but it's a minor issue really.

If no sheaths is the price for an option to create a custom female character from one of the four races - I'm more then willing to pay it.
I hate pre-made characters and being a woman I prefer to play females. I'm perfectly fine with magnetic shoulder blades ![]()
I just pretend the mage in my party has Floating Weapons activated.
It looks cool for me. But i thinkweapon and shield warriors keep their weapons on the hip now, don't they?
It's because ENCHANTMENT!
Because Geralt is a pre-defined character who always uses those two swords.

The old game, where you can have hundreds kind of weapons, you can be from various races, both sexes does that without any problems
And here, more recent game. You can be F/M from various reces here also. Its name is Skyrim
I can't think of a way to get that two handed sword out of a sheath that isn't clunky and unnecessary.

Spoiler
You're aware that this guy has a crossbow glued to his back, right?
As much as I like Skyrim I think it's different kind of cRPG (meaning it's not party based).

Because there are no scabbards for crossbows. Does it has to be "all or none" ? At least he has his sword sheathed properly, not flotaing on his side.
And how does it matter what kind of RPG it is. We are talking about graphics here.

I suspect it's way easier to make sheat working for one character then for a whole group.

It can be done with hundred of characters on the screen. Mount and Blade I mentioned, there are battles with hundred of soldiers, on foot on horses, with different armors, wepaons ... etc. And you can say it is somehow party based, there are companions that can fight alongside with you. All their equipment is fully customisable.
Napolenic era :
Medieval (notice two handed sword sheathed on the knight's back)
Or here
The graphics are lower on that game Frostbite is another whole different beast. This does not have simple swords this has more variations of different weapons ect. This game has to vary it from different races and sizes that game has either a human man or women. This game has to tackle on many things that many of the games mentioned do not have to tackle.
Yes lets be so lazy that we cant even use our imagination to pretend weapons are sheathed. Because from the pen and paper days to modern graphics which has taken everything left to imagination out, no weapon sheathes remain a threat to actually imagine things like this. And thus the developers should definitely waste production time on this since we are all unable to fill this small matter with our own minds. Because afterall, a [fantasy] [game] cannot possibly have logical and real life faults in them - that would ruin the whole gaming experience.

Sorry but read my posts again. There are hundreds of weapons in M&B, between that game and DA:I there is no comparioson when it comes to weapons varieties.
And that game came out in 2008 and its sequel in 2010. It was developed by indie developer not huge AAA behemoth.
Simple swords ? uhh, ok ...
