I play primarily female characters, who will tend toward romancing female companions first.   Other playthroughs will have them romance the guys too, IF (and that's a big IF) the guys are at least somewhat normal.     I had romanced Zevran and Allistair, but never romanced Anders(moody) and Fenris(broody).    They were just too 'damaged' to consider ever having a relationship with them.

When I do play a male protagonist, which is a rare thing, I generally do the relationships in the same order starting with the most charming woman.    This tends to leave any male/male relationships at the very bottom of the 'to do' list.   Hence, I never get to them that often, if ever.    Most male protagonist playthroughs usually are abandoned anyway unless I am doing my 'once-only-evil-as-can-be' playthrough.

Hasn't every romance option  in Dragon Age so far been damaged in a way?(That's a good thing BTW, gives them depth!)

Leliana: Identity issues (Am I a bard or a chantry sister at heart?)

Morrigan: Mommy issues, inability to socialize due to horrible parenting.

Alistar: Daddy issues, inability to face his problems so he shrouds them in humor.

Zevran: Attachment Issues.

Merril: Self-Esteem issues

Isabela: Attachment issues

Fenris: Scarred by abuse and slavery

Anders: Is possesed by a demon seeking vengance.

Yes, but the scarring of some was just....so over the top than others.  I think it boils down to personal preference at that point.

From my PoV, I found Anders physically and emotionally repellent.  And I never knew who was looking at me from his face.  If others found him appealing, fantastic, but I never could bring myself to even flirt with him.  The one time I tried when he said "I'll just end up hurting you." I agreed and dropped him like a hot potato.  That playthrough felt tainted and I never finished it.

When I was young I would always be grossed out by m/m. But I got older and just grew up basicly. I love rpgs and love creating my characters and playing those
Characters as I plan them to be instead as some people who just play their character as themselves.

Over the years I have developed 4ish characters that I play, all of course my alter egos. I tried to play a male elf in city origins, but could not get comfortable. I too am married, almost 10 years and am comfortable in our relationship so I think I look for that in an NPC rather than going for the unknown and uncertain.

I'm a heterosexual male, and I play heterosexual romances. That can be a male PC romancing a female NPC, or vice-versa. My PC is not an avatar of me, he/she is their own character, and I'm the one telling their story. Despite that, I get very little out of homosexual romances. When I've played lesbian PCs, it's always attractive in the same sense that looking at two things I've attracted to is better than looked at only one thing I'm attracted to. And I've gone one or two dialogues into m/m romances before, and then reverted to a previous save. It just doesn't work for me. It's always felt very....shallow, I guess? I don't get a lot of deep 'feels' from homosexual romances. It's dirty, forbidden fruit kind of stuff. Not pure and romantic, which is what a lot of others seem to get out of it. Me? I'm a little more traditional and conservative in my thinking. I see male and female as two halves of a whole. One feels incomplete without the other. So I don't get very much out of homosexual romances and I don't play them. <This is my personal experience, and not to be confused with any judgements on the experiences of others. We're all different, thank God.>

I MAY go with a Dorian/Sera romance once, just to see if their characters are enough to make an exception. But I have my doubts as to whether or not it will be any different than before. As much as Dorian's character in particular appeals to me, the m/m thing is just not my cup of tea. I'll probably end up resorting to youtube, and that's fine with me.

Though I did have a FemHawke who had a good tumble with Isabela and was fine with keeping it simple and for fun until she committed to Anders. That was an interesting roleplay experience. She's probably the only truly non-heterosexual PC I've ever played. I wouldn't go so far as to call her bisexual, though. Probably a "woman who has sex with women". She never intended to have an actual romantic relationship with Isabela, and I doubt she would have been open to one if Isabela had pursued it.

Hello,

I agree with this answer:  " I tend to go for lesbian romances being one myself."

However; if I decide I want a different gaming experience; I will roll  different choice.

I am running through DA:2 again; I have a male warrior & will romance Merrill for variety. My F/F romance was Isabella.

I will roll a female mage for my DA:I 1st playthrough; I am not decided on Sera or Josephine yet. I want to meet them 1st.

I prefer playing m/m romances but I play all variations because I like choices and variety. It's interesting to hear so many people say they play as if it's them. I've played RPG's since I first discovered video games/PC and have never had the urge to play as "me". To me it's an escape from the limitations of myself and the world.

1.Why is it "dirty, forbidden fruit" kind of stuff?Homosexuallity is widely accepted around Thedas, it is not forbidden or dirty in any way.It is just pure and romantic as any other romance

EDIT:

2.Why would a woman want to have sex with other women if she isn't sexually attracted to them o.0? (you mentioned she isn't bisexual.)

I'm a gay man, and I'm usually all over the place in terms of who I romance.

In DAO, my first/canon playthrough was as a female Cousland who romanced Alistair. It is still my favourite. For my second run, I tried to make a gay male city elf who romanced Zevran... but he ended up bi, and with Morrigan in the end.

In DA2, I went with a male mage Hawke who romanced Anders(this is my canon save). My second run was a female Hawke who originally I intended to romance Fenris, but I found Isabella suited her better.

In DAI, my intention is to go for Dorian. I'm sure part of it is because I am gay... but he just seems like the most interesting of all of the companions based on what I know so far.

As a straight female, I typically start with a straight female character, and my headcanon is a playthrough representing that as well (lady city elf warden/Alistair and lady Hawke/Anders for headcannon so far). But I experiment later. I never have gotten through a playthrough with a male character, though. I've tried, but I always get bored of playing as a dude. Maybe it's because I try it later in the game - though sometimes I have gone back and played as a lady later and gotten through it, I don't know. I would like to romance Cassandra and Dorian, a part of me, but I doubt I'll ever get a manquisitioner that far.

Usually a man is most appealing to me at first anyway. Alistair is definitely the most appealing romance to me in DA:O, for instance. None of the DA2 romances really appealed to me (the men are too broody, the girls too fluffy), but I was intrigued by Anders changes so I gravitated towards him. Since I put the most of me into my first character, it makes sense that I start with characters I'm attracted to in some way.

Here's the order I've done so far:

(female unless noted otherwise)

DA:O

City Elf/Alistair

Human mage/Leliana

Dalish Elf/Zevran

Human noble/Alistair (for the marriage, didn't know that first playthrough)

Human male/Morrigan (abandoned)

Dwarf commoner/Alistair (because I seriously love Alistair)

DA2

rogue Hawke/Anders (dead)

rogue Hawke/Fenris

mage Hawke (male)/Merrill (abandoned)

mage Hawke/Isabella (gave Izz to Arishock though)

warrior Hawke/Sebastian (abandoned)

rogue Hawke/Anders (let him live)

I tend to play more playthroughs per BioWare game than there are romances anyway. So I've gone through each and every one (with the exception of Cortez in ME3), and approached them all with the same... intensity ;). When I begin to do extra playthroughs, I end up (usually) sticking to one specific LI. And, when the option presents itself, it's often a m/m romance. Why? Because there are enough straight stories in gaming, so when I get the opportunity to tell one more like me, I do. That's all.

So it was Anders in DA2, and Kaidan in ME3. Zevran... I made an exception because I seriously dislike his romance.

I like to think of role-playing in the literal sense. Always found it amusing that people might get upset at, for example in mmorpgs, guys playing as gals but it's fine to be an alien space pirate with an addiction to coconut water. Like, really?

It's called role-playing for a reason. Some people may view "themselves" as the character, but a lot just view their characters as just that, "their character". Either is fine. As for the question itself, no, usually my characters are hetro males and will romance a female character. I do base it on personality, but also because I imagine this character's story beyond the scope of the game. Gay relationships do not bother me (and I have plenty of gay/lesbian friends, my sergeant is a lesbian), but I tend not to seek them out for my own characters out of personal preference.

I romanced Leliana in the first game and Merrill in the second because I not only liked them, but also the harsh backgrounds that they grew through. In Mass Effect I romanced no one because there were no female characters I liked (In fact I hated all of them except Tali and she wasn't a romance option until the last game, which I felt was stupid and too late). I like to remember that love is an option and not a requirement, I'm fine with a character that sets aside his love life for duty or who is still out there seeking "the One".

1st: It's not an addiction, and my Salarian can quit anytime he wants. So there.

The real purpose of this message was to tell you that you can romance Tali in Mass Effect 2, not 3 (unless you have already romanced her in 2, then the romance continues). It's actually a great, sweet little romance and I suggest you try it out!

As a gay lady, i tend to do gay romances..... sometimes gay male romances.

But I can't do straight romances at all.

I'm in the same place as you, just reverse the gender.

All of my Wardens have been gay/lesbian except for a single female Dwarf Noble, who romanced Alistair and my male human mage, who was bisexual so he could romance Morigan and get the achievement.  I have three or four male Dwarf Nobles, who were all gay and two female dwarf commoners who were both lesbian.

All of my Hawkes were gay.  I've done about 4-5 male Hawkes and I split them between Anders and Fenris (I think Anders makes a better story in the long run) and I tried a single female Hawke, but never got out of Act I with her.  She flirted the hell out of Isabela, though.

I'm expecting that my male Inquisitors will all be gay (I'm happy with IB and Dorian).  When I do a female, though, she might be bisexual because I'm not really feeling either of the f/f options.  Since I'll be playing either a dwarf or qunari, I'll have to decide between Josephine, Sera, and Blackwall.  It will ultimately depend on which one I like the best.

Ultimately, there are way too many games that require me to play as a straight person, so I will always choose to be gay if given the option.

Josie and Blackwall both look awesome to me, though for different reasons. (My Qunari female will probably be going Blackwall though). Blackwall is literally what I want to be when I 'grow up' :P.

Do gamers grow up or level up? This is a question I would like to understand before the next generation is developed.

I'm a gay guy and I find it very hard to play male/female romances. I just find them dull and not that interesting. I haven't always felt like that, especially before I was more open and accepting about my own sexuality. Now I only really play gay/lesbian characters and sometimes bisexual as well.

I've only really finished one Warden who was a Dwarf Male Noble who romanced Morrigan but ended up with Zevran. Then all of my Hawke's have been gay, and all of my planned Inquisitor's are gay as well. I may get round to the M/F romances at some point, but the gay/bi/pan romances come first.

I'm a bisexual female, and I always, always play female characters if I have the choice.

So far, my canon romances are all heterosexual, but I would be happy to do a lesbian romance for the right character. Really, it does boil down to character for me - and physical attractiveness.

In DA:O I romanced Alastair, who won me over with his easy charm and slightly nervousness. Similar sort of story for Garrus with femShep.

In DA2, I went for Fenris, mostly because his introduction was like, "...Dammmmn." It was by far the most up-and-down relationship I've ever played, with plenty of emotional content, even in a friendship run. I enjoyed it thoroughly and the fact they didn't always see eye-to-eye but still were attracted to and respected each other was really interesting. If I did decide to do another canon runthrough with another romance though, it would be Isabella. Anders makes my skin crawl, and Merrill just doesn't feel like an equal to me.

I think that might be the most important thing actually. They have to feel like they can keep up, and that I can have a relationship between equals. Gender is a far second.

I will however take a moment to note that, as I tend to play bisexual female elves, I am going to have a whopping six choices for DA:I. We'll see who wins me over. :D

It always depends on the character I'm playing at that time. I usually have a solid idea of the person I'm playing as (their characters, likes and dislikes) and I try to find the best match for them. So there's no option I'd say no to as long as it feels like my Warden or Hawke would go for it.

And v. soon my Inquisitor as well :) Only 2 weeks and 4 days now!

I have no problems playing F/F, M/M or M/F when it comes to these games.    My sexuality does not determine how I play games.  I can get the same fulfillment no matter how I play.

First and foremost I want to start out and say that I want mature answers in this post. I am simply curious of the answers and do not want this to escalate into some form of war of sexuality matters.

I have the tendency to try all forms of romances in DA. For this question to be more understanding I can start out and say that I am a man in a heterosexual relationship. There.

For example. When I played DA:2 with my male Hawke I romanced Anders on several occasions and went all the way (if you know what I mean) why? Because he was the most interesting character in the game for me. All the female characters except Merill was plain boring to be honest and that's why I chose to go with Anders.

When I look at the characters in DA:I I can already feel that Dorian seems more interesting than Josephine and Cassandra and will probably romance him.

So my question is, does anyone else just don't care about who you romance and only focus on the "character"?

Im in opossite. I havn't any tendency to play every romance options in any ( not only BioWare) games. To be honest, I use " romance path" very rarely, so I don't care if NPCs is gay\bi\lesbian\hetero , becouse for me friendship is enough to be happy with his/her company, and knows certain companion very good. From other hand if I decide to romance anyone it's always my PC female ( I always play female if available) in heterosexual relationship.

When I play as myself I romance only guys, obviously

But when I play as not-myself and give my PCs their own personalites, characters, traits my PCs romance whoever they like

Hetero guy , I stick to M/F or F/M romances , Can't get into or enjoy M/M romances , i've done F/F but i can't really even get into those either.
