I'm a female gamer (hetero) and have only once played a girl/girl romance and it felt really odd to me.  I do play male/male romances in certain games - especially if I like the male voice actor for the PC more than the female.

Hetero female here who's always played female characters. I've started characters specifically to romance same sex characters, but it's just never "there." Leliana is great, but I like her much better as a friend. Same with Isabela. And as interesting as Zevran might be, I've never been able to romance him either. I've tried creating male characters with the intent of romancing Morrigan or Leliana, but the interest isn't there.

In Origins I almost always romance Alistair and then marry him to Anora. In DA2 I romanced Anders exactly once because I'd hoped he was going to be more like Awakening Anders, and then never bothered to again. My head-canon is always a romance with an NPC I can't romance, like Nathaniel in Awakening or Cullen in DA2.

I usually do romance all the girls in the game, but this time i'm still undecided if i will romance Sera. I just don't like her.

1.Why is it "dirty, forbidden fruit" kind of stuff?Homosexuallity is widely accepted around Thedas, it is not forbidden or dirty in any way.It is just pure and romantic as any other romance

EDIT:

2.Why would a woman want to have sex with other women if she isn't sexually attracted to them o.0? (you mentioned she isn't bisexual.)

1. I agree, homosexuality itself is not a moral issue in Thedas. But that was how *I* was viewing the situation, not how my character *should* have been viewing the situation. I was seeing it as a 'forbidden fruit' moment when my character should not have. It made it nigh on impossible to play a gay/lesbian character honestly. And if I can't play them honestly, I shouldn't play them at all. I don't like treating people(even fictional ones) that way.

2. Spoilered for length of explanation.

I wanted to romance Nathaniel too. He was awesome.

I'm a hetero female and I generally play a female character. I started a couple male characters in Origins, but I never got very far with them. My main play through is always female and I always romance one of the dudes. I've contemplated starting a male character in Mass Effect to romance Tali because I always liked her and she deserves some love (and I always romance Garrus so she can't have him  ), but I never did. It doesn't really do it for me. The girl on girl and guy on guy stuff doesn't do it for me either. That's for the people that swing that way.

That being said, I pretty much exclusively played a male Argonian in Skyrim because I thought he looked the coolest.

I'm a straight female myself and tend to gravitate towards heterosexual relationships but lately I've been going more with the idea of "what would my character prefer." Consequently, I've played many open-minded female characters who have proven to be attracted to both sexes. On three of my Origins playthroughs I romanced Leliana until it came time to choose between multiple love interests.

One of my favorite romances turned out to be a female Hawke and Isabella though. Again, Isabelle just meshed best with the character's personality and life philosophy.

I have yet to play as a male character in either Dragon Age or Mass Effect universes but I'm seriously contemplating changing that fact for Inquisition since I an very interested in both Cassandra and Dorian's romance arcs.

I ALMOST never romance. I will for achievements, but that is about it. I just like the stoic, duty comes 1st, aspect and find the romances as more of a distraction then anything. I dunno, I've just never cared about romance in games at all, I get enough of that in my personal life, dont need or really want in in my games(dont even care about it books or movies, truth be told).

I hate to admit it, as I'm embarrassed. For me IRL, like Alistair "I've never had the... Pleasure." So in game romances, I choose which ever seems the, idk cutess. easier said than done.

As Zev was adorable, and plus his "Last mission confession." made me wanna cry. Leliana was adorable, because after you gave her the nug. Her "Snuffle snuffle *squeeky giggle*" was just corny, but cute.

In DAO, my Warden-Commander's straight. He romanced Morrigon. Why? Because, she's the first mage he met, that grew up outside of the Circle. And he felt the best of both world's, as my Warden's pro-circle, but sees life isn't simple as it was in the circle.

Hawke was different, and a bit more challenging RP wise. Because, I wanted to play a guy Hawke, make him as close as CGI Destiny trailer look. And like his mother, wanted to put more magic in the bloodline. However, something about Anders drew me in. So, I played around with Hawke, to make Hawke bi. Had a fling with Isabella, but chose Anders. And later all went on Isabella's ship.

My canon Qunari, Kierro will be with Bull, or Cassandra, didn't like her at first, but she started to grow. Especially after hearing her VA explain her. So, my Qunari's gay, or straight... Maybe also bi.  ^_^ Tho likely gay. DAO: Straight, DA2: Bi, DA:I - Gay.

I am a heterosexual female, and I only focus on the character. In DAO I make a noble warrior (see the picture) to romance (and became a King of course :P) for romance Morrigan (mostly just for this). In DA2 I decided I romance Fenris (with my second character, I can not play with the first one.... I really don't like DA2 at this time), and then I decided I go with a male, who is gay. Usually, I play bisexual characters like my Drechor(picture). So, yeah I focus on the character. :)

Fun topic!

Male PC / Male LI:

As a gay man, it's obviously quite easy for me to engage in male s/s relationships.

Dorian will be my first LI as I vastly prefer romancing human males (Fenris is a notable exception, but Rivalry romance was just too good).

Iron Bull will be my 2nd or 4th LI, depending on how the game plays out.

Female PC/ Male LI:

I strongly prefer to play as a male, but since straight male LIs are closed off to men, I have no qualms rolling a female character.

Sexual orientation is irrelevant when it comes to appreciating a man and his qualities, so romancing men as a female character comes naturally.

Alistair fits many of my ideal qualities in a man so it was rather fun to romance him on several playthroughs as a woman.

Cullen has piqued my curiosity for the past two games. What I've seen from DAI has made him quite attractive to me, so Cullen will be my 2nd LI.

Male PC / Female LI:

I find it relatively easy to romance women as a male character. I have been in a few opposite-sex relationships in my teenage years so I know how it's like, but I simply cannot connect with them on the same level as men (as I later discovered :P ). It's easier to pretend in a game though so I just go with it. However the women MUST have strong personalities and look attractive or at least striking in some way. Thankfully BioWare do well enough in that department.

Cassandra will be my 3rd LI.

Hopefully it will be as good (or even better) than the Morrigan, Leliana, and Isabela romance arcs.

Female PC / Female LI:

The problem I have is with female s/s relationships. The complete absence of men makes it quite hard for me to replicate the physical and emotional attraction in the relationship. It's certainly not impossible for me to do it, but I simply feel no connection in the romance and it has no appeal to me whatsoever.

I will definitely romance Sera or Josephine with a female inquisitor once to experience the relationships though.

I'm a bisexual woman, I play male and female characters in both straight and gay relationships. Though being female, I tend to play as a woman on my first playthrough. But I definitely approach RPGs from a roleplaying perspective, so I easily step into the role of a player character that doesn't necessarily reflect me. I might not be a gay man, but I definitely plan to play one because Dorian seems super interesting to me, for example.

1st: It's not an addiction, and my Salarian can quit anytime he wants. So there.

The real purpose of this message was to tell you that you can romance Tali in Mass Effect 2, not 3 (unless you have already romanced her in 2, then the romance continues). It's actually a great, sweet little romance and I suggest you try it out!

; ) lol

And you're right, you technically start in ME2, I completely forgot about it. I do want to try it eventually but not only is my anime, book, and game backlog miles high I'm also not a big replay guy unless the game is built around it. I work hard to 100% on my first way through and in the case of multiple story branches I, as I tell my friends, don't "go looking for trouble" if I earn an ending I am satisfied with and that I felt I earned, for better or worse. To me twisting the "set story" is almost like cheating, if I'm really curious I'll youtube major plot changes but most of it is minor anyway.

There were a few exceptions for me... the ending of Suikoden 5 without collecting all 108 (I missed ONE and didn't notice) stars of destiny bothered me to such an extent that, despite accidentally saving over my pre end dungeon save, I replayed through the entire game 100% against just for Lyon.

1.I find it dissapointing people still look at m/m or f/f romances and consider them "forbidden fruit".But if that is the view that suits you, and the way you percieve characters, that's fine I guess.

2.I believe you're talking about romantic orientation, not sexual orientation. If I understand correctly, if a woman is sexually attracted to both men and women she is bisexual. That doesn't mean she has romantic interest in both genders, that would be romantic orientation.

I want my inquisitors to romance Blackwall and Cullen, however I find Dorian really fascinating so for the first time ever, I'm going to create a male character so I can experience Dorian's romance.

Bioware always excels in creating interesting characters and this time around it's no different.

Dorian and his stache are irresistible, even to straight guys!

On a serious note, I love that I'm seeing more and more of these comments in response to DA: I.  I see a lot of guys in favor of f/f romances and deride or ignore m/m romances, so it's nice to see that more and more guys are willing to at least try it before deciding that it's not something they could RP.

Well, most of the time I play as a straight character, but my favorite playthrough of DA:O was when I played as a female dwarven rogue and romanced Leliana. Best romance ever. I just couldn't resist. I adore her. So glad she's making a comeback. She may not be a follower, but it's better than nothing. Gotta know if she is still in love with my warden.

Can't seem to make up my mind as to who I'm gonna romance this time around. I was really losing it over Dorian, but some of the initial excitement is wearing off. I've never done a male gay romance before either. I much prefer to play as female, being a girl myself, and playing as a gay male character just seems like it would be awkward to me. I don't think I could get into it. Other than him, Cullen and Solas both seem appealing, but Solas is elf only and Cullen is elf/human only. Since I must play as a qunari at least once, I'll probably be going for either Josephine or Blackwall. If I give in and go with elf, it'll either be Solas or Cullen. Most likely Cullen if he'll come down off his Templar high horse. I'll be playing as a mage who is anti Circle after all. Really do hope I can get him to soften up on the issue. If not, Solas.

As a female heterosexual gamer I do tend to pick the heterosexual romances.  In fact, in all the DA games I have done the m/f romances only but in Mass Effect my female Shepard romanced Liara because I really liked her character.  But if I don't like a character gay or straight I won't romance that person.  For me none of my Shepards were interested in Jack.  They all thought she needed help...a friend first. (IMHO)  So no romanced with her.

I'm a Lesbian and I always role play as a Lesbian; romancing whatever females are available to do so. So far in all the games, I have always either enjoyed or hated each and every NPC's personality - which is great fun!

I absolutely love Bioware romances though, so I usually go watch YouTube vids on all the other romance possibilities once they become available... but with DA:I? I might have to break my own tradition (other than for achievement purposes) and make a male Inquisitor so that I can romance the feisty temptress known as Cassandra!
