I am a male, and identify as heterosexual. This is because I've never found myself attracted to another male emotionally, or physically, while I have with females. However, I don't like to rule out the possibility that I could find a male attractive.

More often than not, I play as a female character where I can, because they kick ass, and because I like to support them being well-represented. In ME, I have played as a male character multiple times, though, and have romanced Liara most times, and Miranda on one occasion. Tali on another. Playing as a female Shepard, I have romanced Samantha Traynor, both because I love her as a character, and because I like to support LGBTQ+ representation.
Something I'd like to do is play through the trilogy as a bi-sexual or a pansexual Shepard. Perhaps romance Garrus in ME2, and Traynor in ME3. Perhaps Tali in ME2, and Steve Cortez or Kaidan in ME3.

My only proper playthrough of DAO was with a female Warden who romanced Alistair. Same with DAII. Female Hawke with Anders. Part way through a playthrough with a male Hawke at the moment, who kissed Tallis. In Inquisition, I think that my 'canon' (first) playthrough will be with a female Inquisitor, who will romance Josephine. I'd like to later play with a male character romancing another male character, as this has made me realise that I've never done a male same-sex relationship in Bioware games.

I´m a straight male gamer and I´ve always played as one. Lately I have played as straight female too, brought out some new interesting storylines.

I'm ace and pretty much aromantic, but I'm all down for roleplaying.  I plan on romancing pretty much all of the characters in a wide swath of multiple playthroughs, and will even have a "forever alone" playthrough to see how that goes.  Lesbians, gay men, pan, bi and hetero, I plan on doing it all.  And why not?  With 9 + playthroughs, I'm going to want to experience as much different content as possible to keep it interesting.

First and foremost I want to start out and say that I want mature answers in this post. I am simply curious of the answers and do not want this to escalate into some form of war of sexuality matters.

I have the tendency to try all forms of romances in DA. For this question to be more understanding I can start out and say that I am a man in a heterosexual relationship. There.

For example. When I played DA:2 with my male Hawke I romanced Anders on several occasions and went all the way (if you know what I mean) why? Because he was the most interesting character in the game for me. All the female characters except Merill was plain boring to be honest and that's why I chose to go with Anders.

When I look at the characters in DA:I I can already feel that Dorian seems more interesting than Josephine and Cassandra and will probably romance him.

So my question is, does anyone else just don't care about who you romance and only focus on the "character"?

It's a role playing game... so anything goes!

I'm not gay in real life... But I don't kill bears or priests IRL either. ;)

Something I'd like to do is play through the trilogy as a bi-sexual or a pansexual Shepard. Perhaps romance Garrus in ME2, and Traynor in ME3. Perhaps Tali in ME2, and Steve Cortez or Kaidan in ME3.

.

Might I suggest the latter?  Kaidan's romance is awesome as a male Shep and I could easily see how you could do a bisexual male Shep who longs for Kaidan, but doesn't come to terms with his feelings until ME 3.  It's a slow-burn romance and it's pretty damned cool to see two brothers-in-arms fall in love over the course of a three game series.

I say this as a connoisseur of m/m romances in video games.   ;)

I personally only romance companions who gender the gender I, the player, am attracted to, i have no desire to romance someone I am not attracted to. So for me it is women that I romance, of the 4 romaceable women in the Dargon age series (excluding DA:I because I haven't played it) I only romanced two because the other two were uninteresting as a romance to me. As this is a purely subjective it is in no way a "value" statement. In fact Romance options are a meh feature for me, I am happy to see them in the game but its not something that I will lose any sweat over if the romance options don't pan out for me.

I enjoyed romancing both Morrigan and leliana but Isabela and Merrill I was never interested. I think PART of the reson was the mechanics on when and where you could talk to your companions I mean they really had nothing to say to you because they were not developed that way. Soo there really wasn't much of a relationship to explore. I didn't like the Merrill was so "innocent" as a romance partner and I didn't like that Isabela was the polar opposite. I used them both a lot of the time in my party as I liked their banter and responses to the world but I was not intrested in them romantically.

I would much rather they dropped all romance options  if it was a choice between romanceable characters and an Origins style companion interaction of being able to talk to them when you wanted to not at some preset gamey moment. (This is a false choice only here for illustration. I am not implying you can't have both or this choice is even real). Varric resonates as the companion I like best, more because of the cut scenes with him in the deep roads and with cassandra, than anything to do with the actual companion mechanics. So i'd rather have better interactions with companions on the whole than worry about the romances.

But that is just me for others the importance of romances  could be greater.

I play these games as myself, putting myself into fantastical situations. About the closest I come to roleplaying is acting out the arsehole sometimes, stuff I would never do in real life. So, I always play as a dude (if it's available in the game) and I pretty much play the hero, kickin' the assholes of the world where it hurts the most. I'm a heterosexual male, so my romances are always heterosexual. Not really interested in homosexuality, at all.

I'm a lesbian, and my first playthrough of a BW RPG is always with a queer female character. After that I tend to play as a queer male, but I've done straight female too. I can't say I've ever managed to complete a playthrough as a male PC in a hetero relationship. It's fairly irrational, but I just lose interest in my PC really quickly. That's despite the fact that I'm absolutely in love with Morrigan, and Tali. So in my case, gender/sexuality of my PC and how much I can identify with it definitely trumps my interest in the romanceable character... So long, Cassandra. It could've been real. I'm sure we'll be great friends.

Gay male here (well I identify as gay even though I'm not a kinsey 6 per se), and I usually play as either a female romancing a male, or a self insert male romancing males. That said, I did nearly experience m/f Morrigan romance after creating a male mage for it, since I loved exploring her friendship with a female mage, but I just couldn't bring my self to go through the circle tower and deep roads for the 1243565567th time, so I didn't get around to it or a few other playthroughs I had in mind  -_-  I did romance Isabela once with a femHawke, I loved her character development in previous runs so I had to try it (and I would have absolutely romanced Aveline if she were a lesbian romance option). So I guess I often do m/m and f/m, and have experienced f/f; and it doesn't look like this will change, as the romance options I'm most interested in for DA:I are Cullen, Dorian and Josephine (who I will likely romance as a lesbian), possibly Blackwall too.

Wow! Sounds like a very cool idea! I shall try my best to remember this, for when I get round to playing the trilogy again.

Edit - I adore the idea of somebody coming to terms with their sexuality at a time of such panic and distress (with Saren, Collectors, Reapers etc.).I see a sadness there, in that they're almost fighting a battle with themselves. As in that he longs for Kaidan, but is not accepting that he may be attracted to males. But at the same time, I see a happiness there, as Shepard is going to be very happy with Kaidan, as he's longed for him all the way since ME1. Also, as I don't believe Kaidan ever discussed his sexuality with Shepard, it would have been immensely delightful to find out that he likes men too, and that he's attracted to Shepard. They can be together. And that would be a huge light in the face of all the darkness they must deal with.

I'm a hetero female and pretty much play females whose LIs are pretty inevitably male. If a male LI is interesting eough (hello, Dorian!), I'm certainly willing to play a male character  to romance them IF I can motivate myself to do multiple playthroughs. Due to work and juggling a bunch of games that I regularly play (and some other stuff), I find myself less willing to do multiple playthroughs these days even if I really, really love a game.

My real issue with trying out other romances is that I inevitably get really attached to the first LI that I choose, and I then find it a bit difficult to just switch to someone else on subsequent runs through a game. Well, maybe if Blackwall (planned LI) turns out to be a jerk, I'll be able to move on to Dorian or Cullen or Solas or Iron Bull - heh. At any rate, at least it looks like there a number of decent LI options this time around!

Heterosexual male. While I'm inherently attracted to females, what makes romances interesting in BioWare games are the relationships and not the poorly-executed sex scenes. That being said, I've always gravitated towards females as romance options, partially because I am straight, but also because I find their stories interesting.

Ashley had an interesting background being somewhat discriminatory against aliens, but showing a strong sense of character and appreciation for family. Miranda initially came across as superficial, but really showed a softer and more compassionate side once you got to know her. ME3 it was always a struggle to either remain with Miranda or get back together with Ashley. I also liked Liara, especially in ME2 and ME3, but I couldn't stand her character in ME1.

In Dragon Age Origins, I was always torn between Morrigan and Leliana. I found Morrigan fascinating as she was so rebellious, independent, yet clueless on culture and customs outside the Kocari Wilds. Leliana was always fun and interesting as she initially seems like a sweet and innocent girl, and then you hear about her dark and dangerous past life. As far as DA2, Isabela was easily the life of the party and most interesting character to romance with.

Even if I decided to switch things up on subsequent playthroughs and try a romance with another male as a male, I haven't found the options to be particularly that compelling. I didn't personally find Zevran interesting in the slightest. I enjoyed Anders' character in Awakening, but found him to be a headache more than anything else in DA2. Steve Cortez was much better executed, but again I found other characters to just be more interesting in the end.

DAI definitely seems to have more interesting options than previous BioWare games. I will again start out romancing a female (either Cassandra or Josephine) and see how things go after that. I have a feeling just doing one playthrough is going to be long enough as it is given how large the world is and how much content is in it.

I suppose I trend towards M/F romances, but I've done everything except M/M in past BioWare games. Only exclusively M/M they've had was Steve from ME3, and I found him to be too normal to be compelling. The Kaidan one took me completely by surprise and didn't really seem prominent enough to invest in for over 3 games.

Dorian may be the first M/M I find interesting enough to try.

Gender matters. I only play hetero male or lesbian. Both cases mean romancing women.

I mostly romance female when playing as a male, and romance male/female when I play as a female.
Even when I play as a female, I don't really want to romance dudes 'cause I don't like it when the dude uses cheap flirty lines on me. I couldn't finish the play through of a female warden 'cause I couldn't handle Alistair romance. He's awesome as a friend, but not so much as a romance partner. He becomes an ass when you refuse to pay 50 golds or something for his sister as a female warden.

Exception would be Garrus and Thane. Those two are just awesome, and I have zero hesitation for romancing them as a female Shepard.

As for Anders, that's a guy I hate the most out of whole DA characters along with Loghain (or however you spell it).
He was okay in DA: Awakening, but then became a total eyesore in DA2. The only reason I brought him along to the party was because he was pretty much the only one with healing spells.

I'm a gay male, and I love the m/m romance options. I love the Anders and male Hawke romance, and I'm set on Dorian for my first DAI playthrough. However, that's not what I always go for. Never romanced Zevran, as male or female, mostly because I don't like him that much. I don't have a problem with straight romances, having romanced Alistair and Morrigan, and I tried to go for Isabella with male Hawke in my latest playthrough, but I ended up failing and locking all romances. I don't believe I have a problem with f/f romances either, though I never actually did it. If I have the time, I'll totally romance Sera in a DAI playthrough.

It's funny how I can actually roleplay for the romances, but not the rest of the choices in the game, I always end up making the choices I would make in that situatio. I can never be completely evil, always find a middle ground between elves and werewolves, could never bring myself to side with the templars, or to banish Alistair just to save Loghain.

I'm a straight female, and I tend to do straight females. I have a hard time getting into male protags in BioWare games once I've played through as female because the game just feels disorienting then.

As far as my preferences when it come to the romances, I'm not into seeing the s/s stuff. I don't mind hearing about it, and I think if there was no romance scene or kissing I'd run those romances more often. I say that because I can run s/s in The Sims franchise games because I'm far enough removed from the game that it doesn't bother me just like I can watch shows like Lost Girl or read Jacqueline Carey's Kusheline books and enjoy them because again I'm not the protag in any way.

I think I identify a little too closely with my RPG protags to be able to separate enough to enjoy going there.

OMG. OMG YES

Daddy Alenko and male Shepard are just <3 <3 <3 <3 <3.

Yes, I had to endure two games of being forever alone, pining over Daddy Alenko who seems oblivious to my (Shepard's) feelings but the pay-off in ME3 was just <3. I head-canon that Daddy A is just not ready to explore himself in the earlier games.

[EDIT] To answer the question of this thread, yes. As a self-identifying homosexual male, I like to play gay male characters, especially when there's romance involved. Romanced Zevu, Fen-Fen, and Daddy A and did not regret anything. I played as a het female though just to fall in love with Alistair and Basti.

I'm pretty aromantic, and decidedly an ace. I'm married to a man I've been dating for for freaking years, but it's not exactly the most normal relationship. He's heterosexual, and it works for us. I will say I tend to not do self inserts.

Most of the time, I'll play a woman, though, because A) it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside and B) yeah, it's easier to write a woman for me. Though it's not like men are that different, laziness is always a factor.

A lot of my characters end up romanceless. My favorite Shepard was GOING to. Then Garrus was available in 2 and damnit Garrus. My favorite Warden didn't have interest in tent time.  My favorite Hawke wound up with Fenris vaguely by accident, though, so there's that. Later, I'll usually explore the romances and play a dude or something eventually.

The one big exception is that I've yet to make a SWTOR character who's too busy to snog during their storyline. Especially my chiss agent dude, who snogged everything and everyone.

I can't say I have a real strong preference towards sexuality. But I am about 75% more likely to play a woman, so that kind of limits who I may or may not hook up with.

Looking at my saves, every dude I've played in a Bioware game has hooked up with someone, though. So either I'm stereotyping men, or else I'm using my semirare dude playthroughs for chasing romances I wouldn't normally get to. And I'll never tell which one it is.

I will do multiple playthroughs.  The first will be a big gay romance with Dorian, he will probably get love on multiple playthroughs if I play as male, I may try Iron Bull if I like him as a character.  When I play as female I will romance Sera.  If I find any other the other characters attractive personality-wise I may try a straight romance, but honestly, being forced to play them in every other game (outside of Bioware games) the ability to pursue a same sex romance makes that (SS romance) more likely.

In Bioware's games I tend to go the male/heterosexual route. That said I think its great that there are gay and bi-sexual characters in the games who can be romanced. When it comes to love, sex, and romance we all have our preferences...so I guess to each their own.

Any thing goes just to see all the story arcs and how they play out, after all it's just a game that said I do prefer a bit of T & A for eye candy as a straight guy for my cannon runs.

Anders and Fenris in DA2 were very hard to romance manly because they just moan all the fracking time while Zevran was was kind of funny and had loads of innuendo.

Fav romance in DA2 was my Fem hawk and rival merril in DAO it was male noble Morrigan for the baby lol

As someone who is exactly Kaidan's age from ME 3, I'm not sure how I feel about you calling him a Daddy...... ;)

Yep, this can definitely be played out with the story that ME 3 gives you.  There's definitely a little sexual tension between the two of them in ME, if you are looking for it of course.  I could easily see a situation where Shep misinterprets the Rahna stories as a subtle declaration of heterosexuality from Kaidan.  Then Kaidan gives his "Losing you was like losing a limb" story in ME 2 (heightened if you didn't romance Liara in ME because then it's Kaidan who Shep sends away in the beginning of ME 2), which could serve as the moment when Shep starts to rethink his feelings for him.  And it all culminates in ME 3, when Shep almost loses Kaidan on Mars and then Kaidan gives him the opportunity with the flirt in the hospital!

Where's that damned Blanche gif where she's spritzing herself with a water bottle?  I could use it right now!

Straight female here. Usually I prefer to play female characters and will romance any male or female LI with them if I find said LI interesting. I will only make a male character if the LI I like is gated to men.

In DAO I only liked Alistair, so my girls either romanced him or nobody. (In the Keep I made a male Warden who married Anora since I can't make a decent looking male Warden to save my life.  :pinched: )

In DA2 it was Fenris and Sebastian.

In ME as a whole it was Kaidan, Thane, and Kelly.

For DAI, at least until I've played it, I plan on an Inquisitor for Cullen, one for Dorian, and a female for Josephine.

Call me stingy, but I'm picky with characters I really like.  :)

As pansexual myself character is all that matters to me.If I find someone fun(by my standards)then that is all...look,gender,race and etc. does not appeal to me at all...that is how it is irl and that is how it is for me in games in where you have option to engage with someone in romantic way.

For example in DA2 Fenris was best looking guy you could romance...but his character is unappealing to me and he is someone I couldn't stand for two seconds irl...while on another hand we have someone like Iron Bull now that is not looking like "Prince in Shining Armor"(very opposite) or as someone who looking all "shiney-pretty" like Cullen...but I do find him appealing for one simple reason...his personality is greatly similar as Varric's and Varric is my kind of guy.He will laugh with you,try to make best of time while he is alive, living life how he sees fit,not judging others and understanding that no one in this world can be perfect...in another words person that knows how to be relaxed is my type in every way.

So gender is 0 problem with me...their character and soul however is huge deal with me.I'm just unable to romance someone even in game if the only thing they do is make me sick(I swear I did my best to try and romance Sebastian,Fenris and even Anders...I did managed to survive whole story with Anders romanced but honestly I had no courage to do same with Fenris and Sebastian when I all I wanted to do is punch them in their faces).
