All the mages of Thedas are in open rebellion to escape their oppression from the Chantry. Instead of fighting a big, bloody, war with the odds stacked against them to achieve this why not just join the Tevinter Imperium instead?

The Tevinter Imperium loves mages and anyone who has the gift of magic is considered to be special in their eyes. The Tevinter Imperium's power is in a state of decline right now and they have been at war with the Qunari for decades. The Imperium would most likely welcome hundreds of mages willing to join them and greatly increase their power with open arms. Its not like they don't have a place for the mages either. The Tevinter Imperium has their own Circle of Magi the mages could join and live in.

The argument could be made that Tevinter might refuse the mages. Sheltering the mages may lead them to conflict with the Templars and other nations. On the other hand, the other nations of Thedas all have their hands full right now and I don't think the Templar Order by itself is strong enough to threaten Tevinter. I'll bet some Templars and delegates from other nations would actually support the mages leaving for Tevinter, simply glad to rid themselves of the rebellion.

Because most of them would have been slapped in chains and sold to the highest bidder.

Most people in Thedas are aware of the Tevinter's less than sterling reputation regarding their use (and abuse) of magic, as well as their continued practice of slavery, usually taken from other nations by force. While it's true that they are a magocracy, I don't think that many Circle Mages would be eager to run there, simply to be escape the clutches of the Templars.

From The Last Flight, it actually seems that a lot of mages are seeking out haven within the ranks of the Grey Wardens. Which says something that these apostates would rather travel to the Anderfels and dedicate the rest of their lives to fighting Darkspawn, than travel to the Imperium and deal with the Tevinter Magisters.

I seriously doubt Tevinter would make them slaves. Tevinter already has loads of slaves. Why would they waste hundreds of powerful mages willing to join their ranks by making them cheap slaves that anyone could be?

Most of those mages were raised and educated by the Chantry and the Circle, so naturally a significant number of rebel mages would think that the Imperial Chantry are heretics and the Tevinter magisters are bad because of, you know, blood magic. Keep that in mind that the most numerous mage fraternity are the Aquetarians and Loyalists, who are supporting the Chantry and its laws regarding magic; plus many rebel mages had no choice but to join the rebels (like the human mage Inquisitor in his/her origin), otherwise they would be killed by the Templars who are slaughtering every mage and annulling every Circle nowadays.

And yeah, form what we've heard Tevinter is hardly a "mage paradise", as there is constant power struggle between the magisters, and unless you're apprenticed to someone powerful, you might end up having a quick and violent death by the hands of your rival on a blood magic sacraficial altair.

because of reputation alone, its even referenced several times many Mages who flee to tevinter ended up as slaves, let alone a boatloads of refugee's.

Many circle mages are laughably weak some unable to cast the simplest spells without becoming exhausted. In tevinter such weakness is a death sentence.

No money no skills and poorly trained, heading to country that runs on slavery, wealth and personal ability.

Tevinter isn't some Mage charity HQ. the average circle mage would be worth less then a farmer.............at least they know how to plough a field.

then of course how are they getting their? no money 1000's of Km's to travel up the highway and just hope that no ome gets you all on the off chance your deemed strong enough to be valuable while weak enough not to be a threat.

Ok thanks for clearing this up for me guys. I thought Tevinter was friendly to all mages and would be glad to have them since its a nation in which the mages rule. It seems they are far more corrupt than I thought they were.

Im pro mage as the nex and almost blind to the abuses of magic but tevinter is not some pancea for magi its very corrupt and has very cutthroat enviroment that foreign magi probably wouldnt survive.

They make slaves out of everyone until x factor. Just you a mage in a mageocracy with a loose meritcracy aswell doesnt mean its good for you. You may be "free" but you may be a slave in a different fashion

* this is said out of character in character im more understanding and almost encouraging*

Asunder describes how Rhys once spent some time in Tevinter as part of a diplomatic party and it was not a positive experience.    I think a mage like Hawke, with the reputation of having slain the Arishok, would certainly get a good reception in Tevinter, but otherwise the majority of mages would be very low down the social scale, above non-mages but that's not saying much.

Fenris might have been prejudiced but I don't think he ever lied about what Tevinter was like, simply only told it from what he had seen.   He definitely states that the Tevinter are perfectly willing to enslave mages.     The best way to view it is to remember that Tevinter mages are the aristocracy/nobility and only willing to welcome mages to their ranks whom they consider worthy.

Lambert's experience is also worth remembering.   His best friend was a mage who became the Black Divine.    They both started out as idealists who "wanted to change the world" but after the guy became the Black Divine he was more concerned with holding onto power and that meant indulging in blood magic just to stay ahead.

The mages at Andoral's Reach only narrowly voted in favour of rebellion and the most powerful faction, the aequetarians, would not approve of the use of blood magic and so would be very unlikely to favour any sort of co-operation with Tevinter, let alone going there.    May be some of the mages in the more northern lands bordering Tevinter would have slipped over the border as the better option to trying to join the rebellion in the south but otherwise I should think most mages are just trying to stay one step ahead of the Templars and stay alive wherever they are.

Because the rebelled mages have been a bunch of slaves of the false Chantry for most of their existance, they are not worthy of joining the Great Tevinter Imperium.

Because most of them would have been slapped in chains and sold to the highest bidder.

And because of this too.

It's simple. Tevinter is very competitive when it comes to sorcery. They wouldn't look kindly on a bunch of refugees coming in and creating more competition. Especially if it's Andrastrian mages raised on White Chantry propaganda. It could destabilize the status quo in the Imperium.

Because the end result would be one of these options:

a) Slavery

b)Being accepted into a Circle but at the end of the totem pole, having to deal with mages to whom backstabbing their way to power is second nature in contrast with Southern mages who have been sheltered their whole lives by the Circle and a community that supported its members

c)Being accepted into a Circle but at the end of the totem people and thus be sent to fight Qunari immediatelly.

d) Entry is not allowed and they spent their provisions making the trip.

Bottom line, Magisters are not their brothers in plight. They don't want the competition of Southern mages.

even the Mortalitasi? I doubt they could just crush the necromancers from Nevarra. Oh sure the Tevinter mages would likely win in the end, but the Mortaltasi would put up a fight.

Speaking of the Mortalitasi, how is this order regarding the mage rebellion? Do you think a Nevarran circle mage could find refuge by joining this order?

Mortalitasi...maybe could put up a fight, if the battleground was Nevarra. But don't forget, the founder of the Mortalitasi was a Tevinter guy who came to Nevarra, so Tevinter still is just as good at necromancy as Nevarra.

And yes, I imagine Nevarran Circle mages might be allowed to join the Mortalitasi, but only if they deemed you worthy.
