I'll start by saying that in Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 I played a mage, so for Inquisition, I wanted to mix things up by playing a Templar instead. A lot of my characters are usually based on myself, but recently on games like Skyrim, I discovered that creating a character in its own right can be really rewarding, as I'm sure many of you know from what I've read here already.

I wanted to create someone a little bit older than my usual character, someone with a bit more wisdom and experience than the usual 20-25 year old, but what worries me is that the non-mage Trevelyan is already set to be the youngest in the family. I don't want to create someone and then have the experience lessened by seeing my older siblings looking 15 years younger.

Do you think the known backstory will have much of an impact on the game at all, and if so, how much?

I'm wondering the same thing for much the same reasons... I want my main Trevelyan (also a templar!) to be around 42, someone who was actually in the templar order for a number of years before everything went to pieces. Thus far my workaround is that he is in fact the youngest in his generation, so dialogue can be explained that way... But yeah any siblings show up and that's completely gone.

Just based on the Lavellan mission that appeared on the war table in one of the twitch streams, potentially you wouldn't be dealing with family members directly (ie through Cullen/ Leliana/ Josephine's agents instead)... hopefully...

I think they're gonna be around 30-40

I doubt anyone would be surprised if Trevelyan was into his or her 40s.  Look at Bann Coerlic - he must have been well into his 70s by the time of DAO, since he was already middle aged in TST.  If he had kids, they would have all been late 30s at the youngest.  Arl Eamon wasn't old in TST, 15, I think, so a very young PC works too.

If I'm not mistaken, it was said somewhere that Trevelyan's age range is about 20-40 right? Well, there you go.

Personally I'm planning to make a 35-40 years old Trevelyan (warrior) and around 30-35 for my mage Trevelyan. When we see the cast of other companions, they're a little bit older than DA:O this time. Solas is over 40, Blackwall is probably 40+, Cass, Josie, Leliana & Cullen surely 30-40, Dorian seems early 30. Varric seems around 30-40 except if Dwarves don't age the same way as human. Sera seems quite young and Cole unknown. Impossible for Viviane to go First Enchanter without hitting 35 first, and I can't imagine Iron Bull be below 30+.

It actually make sense to make an older (35-40) years old character than in DA:O when the setting forced the Warden to be quite young.

No. It was said that the Inquisitor is 20-40 depending on race. I also doubt any of them are a part of any faction.

My Trevelyan inquisitor is Anders (YES, THAT ANDERS!), I also planned 2 extra Trevelyans girl who are his sisters, one older (templar) and one younger (rogue) than him

The Trev inquisitor attends the summit with members of his/her family and since everyone else there diiiieeesss....well. I'm curious as to which family members they are. If they're sibling then you're safe from having them ruin anything.

I'm wondering if it's going to be Cousland level decimation. I love that angst but also it is cry haha I guess we'll see in two weeks!

Being the youngest doesn't need to mean that you're particularly young. If your siblings are 50 and 49, at 48 you're still the youngest of them all. ;)

The Trevelyan backstory is vague enough that you can make anything work. If you want your Inquisitor to be in their 30s, 40s, just push the oldest siblings ages up. Your oldest sibling could well be in their 50s+, have their own family and kids by now, and still be waiting for your parents to kick it so they can finally inherit the throne (look at Prince Charles IRL, the guy's a grandpa at this point and still not ruling) - so you can be as old as you want and still be the youngest of your generation. I really doubt we'll be seeing our family at all this time to contradict this - at most we'll be mentioning them in conversation, if even that much.

That makes sense. Remember that Cousland Warden was roughly twenty and his/her brother Fergus already had a kid. Now I feel sad. Poor Oren.

Well why be old? When you can be young. I'd prefer my mage to be young about 20-28 years old.

If MGS 4 taught me anything then it's that it's not much fun to play as an old geezer.

I doubt we'll meet any relatives in the game or if we will, it will be at the beginning (so you can restart easily). The reason for it is the accent. Unless there's some description in the creator that points out which one is more appropriate for your backstory, it would be a little awkward to blindly pick the American one and then every member of your family (+ members of the order you joined) speaks with an English one. And vice versa. Maybe we'll just see them in a cinematic with voice over.

Well, why be young when you can be old? ;)

Some players cherish the rare opportunity to play a hero who's mature and experienced enough to actually know what they're doing, rather than yet another springly 20-something winging it as they go and saving the world by the seat of their pants. DAO and DA2 already forced us into a certain age range not everyone is comfortable roleplaying, it's great that this game's hero was left vague enough to give us all the choice to play our protagonist as we prefer them.

Accent?  Its gonna take some hand waving to have an american sounding human in the first place.  I'd say looks are far more of an issue.  Nothing was more awkward then having a 90 year old black Cousland being called pup by his "dad."  They could go the DA2 rout and make the family look different based on your PC, but I doubt they would go through that much trouble for just one of four races whose family won't be playing a large role anyways.  I imagine at most you'll get letters from somebody, which is easy to work headcanon around.

I tend to make young characters. I think my oldest was an old elven warden commander, who i basically made like Keeper Marethari.

Sometimes making older characters can be funny, like if you made an old mage in Origins, you still have Irving calling you "child"

I love the Trevelyan back story from what we heard. It's my second favorite and it makes me excited to play as a human nearly as much as dwarf. So far, the Trevelyans I plan on making are going to be fairly young so... Being the youngest doesn't bother me. However that being said, being the youngest doesn't mean they're in their 20s . My cousin is the youngest of her siblings and she is 32. I'm sure that you can make your character whatever you want in your mind because I doubt a specific age will ever be mentioned ^^

I remember reading somewhere that the devs had said that the English accent in more in line with the Trevelyan and Lavellan characters while American was for Cadash and Adaar.

Of course that doesn't mean you can't do whatever the heck you want to in the CC

Don't worry OP, I'm the youngest child in my family, and I'm 42.

Considering we are supposed to be at the conclave to assist our family I have a feeling most fo them will be consumed in the explosion that opens the game. I want to play an older Quiz too, so I'm with you on this.
