Because of a bug in DA2 import feature, Hawke can help Yevhen although Nathaniel is not considered dead at the end of DAO:A if he was left to defend the fully protected keep (option Keep and Amaranthine protected in the keep).

Unfortunately the keep enforce that Nathaniel is dead if the player try to select that Hawke helped Yevhen.

To be accurate to some worldstate (particularly my main worldstate) the keep should accept the following combination of choices:

Keep and Amaranthine protected (in DAO:A)

Nathaniel alive and well (in DAO companions)

Saved Iwan or Saved Merin (in DA2 Act 2)

Didn’t encounter Nathaniel (in DA2 Act 3)

Am I the only one that have a problem with the fact that it isn't possible?

What? You have a problem with the fact that the Keep is not reflecting a bug in the game?

The keep is accurate in that matter. You can't solve both quests in dragon age 2. If nathaniel survived the events of awakening the yevhen quest isn't available and vice versa.

I would like to know if there is a plot reason behind the two quests not appearing at the same time, since so many people have wondered about this.

I think storywise it had to do with the fact, that yevhen or one of is sons was intended to appear in awakening and would be somehow involved, but he wasn't implemented in the end.

http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Merin

Here the trivia section says as follows:

Merin was intended to show up in a cutscene along with Temmerin Glavonak in which he mentions that he joined the Grey Wardens. However this was removed from the game and is considered as cut content.[1]

That probably had to do with whether you could only do one quest or the other in da2

My bad, he should appear in da2 a second time, as seen in this cut content video:

Nathaniel was considered dead in your playthrough, which is why you got the quest in DA2. (Depending how you play through Awakening, some of the companions can be flagged as dead even if you get epilogues that say they survived.)

They were intended to be exclusive (you would get Nathaniel's quest if he was alive; otherwise, you'd get Yevhen's). The Keep enforces that intent.

I would like to know if there is a plot reason behind the two quests not appearing at the same time, since so many people have wondered about this.

It was a design decision to balance the amount of content players would have access to.

As we see in the cut content video though, it's a pretty weird choice since Merin was supposed to have a bigger role and became a Grey Warden. The quest Fool's gold would have probably happened before the Nathaniel one to get Merin's appearance to trigger.

There may have been more to it at one point, but Mike or Luke or somebody noted ages ago that they made the choice simply to spread the content around.

There's no plot behind it that they've ever revealed (at least not that I can remember).

Unfortunate. It was probably another compromise they had to make due to the time constraints.

What? You have a problem with the fact that the Keep is not reflecting a bug in the game?

Actually I have a problem with the fact that I cannot reflect my world state in the keep although there are no story reasons to prevent this combination. Moreover if somebody starts a new playground with both games up-to-date and make the same choices as me he will still come to the same situation (as I have never read anywhere that this bug has been fixed).

If I hadn’t read the wiki I will not have been aware that Nathaniel was in DA2 (and the fact that I helped a dwarf called Yevhen would never have seems inconsistent with what happened in DAO:A).

So considering that the dragon age keep acknowledge the fact you can save both the Vigil Keep and Amaranthine in DAO:A, that story wise Nathaniel and Yevhen do not seems to be linked and that even with both games up-to-date you can still help Yevhen if Nathaniel is alive (if it stayed at the vigil keep) I don’t see why this combination of event could not be reflected in the keep.

It is like it is, like it or not.
The fact that it wasn't supposed to be possible to get both quests in one playthrough in dragon age 2 remains, even if the cut content shows us, that both quests had been planned to be in game originally.
I suppose that they didn't had the time to implement them both and tie them together properly as they wanted to be.
Sad but true.

If you could bo both Then those who let nathaniel live would get 2x the content compared to those who had him die

To be fair, that's supposedly what they're doing with DAI... Or do you honestly believe that Loghain has as many lines as Alistair does?

Don't know.

Or it could be they wanted to give content to those who killed nathaniel

As did those who let Zevran live, who vouched for what's-his-name dwarf (the mean one). Those who purchased the Keep DLC for DA:O. It's not a valid argument. But it still doesn't change the fact that it's like this and so the Keep should respect that (and it does).

Anyone who let Loghain live is a much better man than I regarding forgiveness. I smiled as I lopped his traitorous head off.

Great, you turned this into another Loghain thread. Typical.

How is one extra quest "2x the content"? What about Varric's last armor upgrade being locked behind that bug choice, even if it wasn't bugged?

I hear where the OP is coming from is that there is no valid in-game reason why the quests are mutually exclusive. We'll just have to say Nathaniel died off screen if he wasn't with you to fight the Mother.

It's not.

I don't actually have any opinion on it

You're not allowed to do both, pick one and move on. You know it isn't going to end up being a big of a deal either way.

Anyone who let Loghain live is a much better man than I regarding forgiveness. I smiled as I lopped his traitorous head off.

Allowing Loghain to live had nothing to do with "forgiveness" for me personally. There is no real attonement for what Loghain did, but the fact is that he's an exceptional commander and warrior. (As opposed to Allistar, who is a wimp with absoultely no convicition and a poor leader too.)
