Hey you guys...

I'm thinking of getting the Alienware Area 51...

I've never owned an Alienware machine before, so any advice you guys can give me will

be very much appreciated. Especially from Alienware owners themselves.

Thank you for reading and answering.

Most important piece of advice regarding Alienware: don't.

Best course of action would be to build the PC yourself to your own specifications. And if you absolutely can't do that for some reason and want a pre-built PC, anything but Alienware. Overpriced and skimping with quality wherever they can.

Alienware Area 51 is a paranoid fantasy concocted to hide the true nature of the machine...Alienware Area 52.

If you can stick Lego pieces together, you can built a PC. It's plug->install'n'play really.

maybe a bit more careful, the most lego-pieces doesn´t cost up to several hundred dollars/euros/pounds/whatever^^

OP, what do you want/need?

As long as you don't throw them around or pour a bucket of water over whilst they are powered, there's hardly a thing that can go wrong. Nevermind that, there's lots of excellent guides/how-to's on Youtube that explain and have step-by-step tutorials on how to plug a PC together. Really the hardest part about building a PC is deciding on what components to use.

If you are unsure how to spec out a computer build, find the model you really like at Alienware, then go to a site like Newegg and price out the parts. You will probably find you can build it cheaper and use higher quality components.

When it comes to actually buying the parts, look for the lowest possible price from reputable vendors. Amazon, Fry's, Newegg, Tiger Direct and Micro Center are all good choices.

dont forget useful combinations, alienware likes to combine for example a 6core-highend CPU with a midrange-GPU; or just using 2 RAM-modules on a socket2011-CPU which has quad-channel.

Nevermind the shitty PSUs they are building into their systems. There's a reason they don't name brands. Besides that, I just looked at the specifications for the basic Area 51 ... what a mess.

Intel hexacore CPU paired with an AMD R9 270 GPU ...

2x 4GB RAM sticks for a quadchannel CPU/Mobo ...

Unnamed "Alienware Approved" 850W PSU for a system that will draw ~450W at peak load ...

No SSD and unnamed HDD as its only data storage ...

All that for 1699 bucks. For that money, I could build a PC that is at least three times as powerful for gaming, would still be more than capable for office tasks for anyone who doesn't need a dedicated workstation PC, would be heaps faster (RAM and SSD) and not have its PSU blow up after the warranty expires.

Alienware is nothing short of scamming people with that POS. That's like telling people you're selling a Ferrari just because you painted a car red and put a stallion mark on it here and there.

Alienware. Not even once.

Unless you enjoy paying twice as much for a computer.

Even if you aren't willing to build a computer yourself, you can still find pre-built desktop systems at newegg that are cheaper, much more powerful and include free software/games all at the same time.

Hey ya Deathangel...

well,  I have never owned a gaming machine, ever. So I thought why not Alienware. A noob decision making here.
I am never good at putting stuff together. So building my owm gaming rig would be a disaster really.

So, I have been looking at prebuilt machine...Origin, Falcon Northwest, Digital Storm, MainGear, Velocity and
of course Alienware. Have to be honest, I decided on Alienware based of the design. Again a noob decision
making here.

My first option is to buy the new Mac Pro, no, not for gaming, but for what I need to do, namely image
editing, video editing, 3d modeling/animation. Mac Pro is a very solid workstation. However, I also like to
game. Not a hardcore gamer by the way... just as and when I need to.

It is posible to game on a MAc Pro for Mac Games, but most games that I love to play are on windows. Solution
for that is Bootcamp, but of course it is not as nearly as good as gaming on a PC. Do able but just not as
good.

My second option is to buy a high end gaming PC that will allow me to do what I needed to do on a Mac
workstation and play games at the same time... idk.

I am trying to avoid of buying both a Mac and an Alienware.

Games I play...

Skyrim
Dragon Age series
Batman Arkham series
Diablo III
Trochlight
Mass Effect 1
Boderlands
Assassin Creed III
Tomb Raider
Hitman Absolution
GTA IV

Thanks for taking the time. Appreciate it much.

Wassup Fidite Nemini...

I have a question regarding GPUs...

Now, which one is the better ones to choose... Nvedia or AMD? And can you explain a little bit to me on the why.

Thanks man. Appreciate it much.

i would always try to avoid buying an Alienware-desktop^^

no doubt, Nvidia. or wait, AMD. depends on the programmes you are using/the features you want. you want PhysX in games and use programmes which work well with CUDA? go for Nvidia. you give a damn on PhysX, want Mantle and use programmes which work well with OpenCL? go for AMD. generally AMD is better at GPU-computing, for games there is no big difference.

as a general idea:

i7 5820K (or i7 5930K, if you need more than 28 PCIe-lanes), + a good cooler (i could recommend the Noctua NH-D15)
any X99 board, which one depends on the features you want/need / how much money you want to spend. i have an ASUS X99-A and it works well for me.
4x4 or 4x8GB DDR4 RAM, dont know if your programmes benefit from higher clocks
GTX970, for example the MSI GTX970 Gaming 4G; if you want AMD: R9 290(X), for example the Sapphire Tri-X
any SSD/HDD
a quality brand PSU (like for example SeaSonic, Enermax, BeQuiet!) with at least 500W, or 700W+ if you want to use 2 graphic cards
a case of your choice, pay attention to the maximum supported graphic-card/CPU-cooler dimensions

That depends what games you want to play. First thing to do would be to check benchmarks for the various games you've played so far (I see you already got a list). They are usually easy to find with a simple Google search for example. If you see a trend of either Nvidia or AMD performing better, that's your cue.

Generally, Nvidia is traditionally higher performing (though the margin varies per GPU generation) and more efficient (draws less power and generates less heat), though Nvidia has always charged premium for that, so they've always been more expensive.

AMD on the other hand historically has a very strong midfield for GPUs, meaning with comparatively low budget, AMD GPUs could give you more bang for your buck, so if you're looking at a smaller budget or don't feel like building a monster graphic cruncher system, AMD offers very good value (though with I suppose a budget going up to 1700 bucks for an Alienware 51, budget isn't much of an issue).

If you're looking for PC advice, my recommendation is to generally stay away from gaming boards with such a question and heed on over to techie-fora like tomshardware, guru3d, etc. pp. and ask for advice there. People over there are generally more experienced to help you. Not that any advice in here is by default wrong, but opinions amongst gamers tend to vary much more wildly compared to opinions from PC builders.

Thanks for heads up. I'll do just that then and heed on over to those techie-fora.

Thanks man. Appreciate it much.
