I really enjoy old country, can't stand the newer poppy country sound. My bread and butter is metal, and hardcore. At work it's all pop, and dance not my thing really but every once in a while I'll find myself head nodding along to a good beat. Also the more f*cked up I get the better music I can't stand seems to get lol.

I meet a lot of people that seem to care about the lyrics a lot, and if the lyrics aren't "good" then neither is a song. Most of the time, I could care less about the lyrics and more about the song. But I'm a dancer so maybe I have "ower standards" than everyone else. People seem to complain whatever you put out, as Iggy Azalea demonstrated. She made a rap about what is wrong with the music industry, and a rap about a cat coming out of her vagina with an accompanying video. People went with the cat video. And she was saying that you give people a message and they still throw it back in your face.

...maybe don't put a song about a cat coming out of any orfice of your body? Then people can focus on the other messages a little easier. Shock value grabs attention because it is shocking.

@Fast Jimmy She's talking about the first song. Again, you give people a message and they still don't know what they want.

Because the lyrics are:

1) In most cases the hardest thing to write in the song
2) What gives the song a message and meaning

Not many musicians are capable of writing great lyrics.

^That's why videogame music tends to do better at giving you mood. It's simply focused on creating an atmosphere and not about getting a message across.

Well, in that case the message is the atmosphere.

sad but true.
also, modern mainstream-pop music ist nothing but silly videos and wearing "sexy" outfits, the music doesnt even matter (my opinion).

BTW I've had enough of listening to lyrics about sex, girl, alcohol, betrayal, losers, sadness etc. and I'm not a fan of hateful/profanity-ful lyrics. Basically listening to instrumental music is the best solution.

Instrumental music can also try to get a message across, military marches are a great example.

There's also great lyric driven music, where the singer just wants to impress with poetic and well written lyrics, like many of John Foxx's songs.

The only rapper I listen to is the amazing Angel Haze. She is masterful with her lyrics, and she's the only person in the rap industry at the moment who seems to make songs about things that actually matter. She covered a Kanye West song called "No Church In The Wild." It's about what's wrong with our world today, mainly the fact that it has a suevival of the fittest and dog eat dog atmosphere. That kind of restored my fsaith in rap a little.

Oh I also forgot to mention that more people were interested in the song about the cat rather than the greed of people in the music industry, which is what I meant by "people still aren't happy when you give them a message."

I dislike things that get overdone and seem to take minimal effort to do. This applies to the auto tune laced pop songs that need a rap verse that sounds like its being delivered by someone who has drank five bottles of cough syrup before hand because apparently people apparently eat that stuff up. See: Kesha, Minaj and their endless clones.

Plus, that new "indie" sound every pop rock band seems to have. Meek mills in general. Most screamo and death metal, though I like some stuff from those genres.

Other than that, I generally have heard more things that I like than I dislike.

i can listen/tolerate most music out there. most of my coworkers have different tastes so i hear a lot of different music. i don't like some of it but i don't go out of my way to complain. although pop music is the worst and can only put up with it for so long. insane clown posse is REALLY testing my limits.

A couple of points about autotune:

1) Autotune can be used in live performances not just in recording. Basically any performer who uses a lot dance routines in it's stageshow is probably using autotune. That is most million plus record sellers;

2) Before autotune there was electronic reverb. A lot of singers still use it. It gives an echo-like effect and covers up weaknesses in the singer's voice. Here's an example:

Neko Case is a great songwriter, has a great voice, some have called her voice a force of nature in that she has great pitch and a very powerful dynamic range. But in the past she has relied heavily on reverb. Lack of confidence I guess  Her voice is a little thin compared to some, but even Howling Wolf way back when used reverb (not all the time):

Howling Wolf is a good example of what's wrong with auto tune (besides "wtf Wolf (Chester Burnett), who told you reverb would help?") . His voice has some off-key elements, harmonics I think it's called, which give his voice that depth and feel. Autotune would put every thing on the chromatic scale and destroy some of that.

Music I won't listen to is mainly opera. I don't like the plumy sound of the voices and the melodramatic style of singing. I just don't listen to things like rap or techno, no reason to. Mostly its all about syncopation for me. Although I'm much more into female singer songwrtes then I used to be.

It doesn't matter to me if there's words in a song or not, I and other dancers still know where our hands and feet and the rest of our body goes in a song, with or without words.
