What's cruelly lacking in Thedas are schools, for both mages and mundanes. Mages need to be taught how to control their power, and mundanes need to learn how to deal with magic. Templar-like specialists are an absolute necessity, obviously, but there is no need to have them under a religious authority. Having them as a kind of police force makes way more sense, and by not having to sacrifice their life for that job, more people might be interested in joining.

Traumatizing kids by taking them away from their families is idiotic and counterproductive. They resent the Circle, and parents that love their kids will do anything to hide them. This kind of system is just begging for apostates.

Tranquility is a horrendous practice and it's not surprising that many mages would prefer blood magic rather than ending up lobotomized. You can't blame people who have committed no crime to want freedom, it's human.

Mages could be tremendously useful for the population: hospitals are a given, but there are probably tons of other practical uses for magic. Just look at what Isseya managed to do during the 4th Blight with the flying machines (she had the help of Gryffons but still!).

Of course, this is the POV of a 21th century human, and it's never going to happen in Thedas.

I sit somewhere in the middle.  I personally hate the extremists on both sides and wish we could just come to some kind of compromise.

I believe mages do need more freedom, that Templars do need more accountability.  But I also believe that mages need some sort of governing body watching over them and that they need to be guided on how to use and control their powers.  They are dangerous after all, even if not always intentionally, it is as much for their own good as everyone elses.

We'll see once Lambert's off picture. I can't see any other way. Opression can only work a time before the boundary is stepped and it'll be open rebellion once again.

I keep comparing the situation to other fantasy worlds with similar concerns (mainly the Harry Potter & Star Wars saga), and IMO opression can't work...

Lambert hasn't been seen for 2 years.

There can be no peace because too many people on both sides feel this way about each other.

No middle ground. Worthy mages should embrace demons and blood magic, and then rule.

And who cares about all those innocent people that get ground underfoot during the process, right?

There is no such thing as an ''innocent'', there is only ''innocent of ( insert )'', and yes who cares?

Exactly why, as pro-mage as I am, I say we still need templars.    It's fun to see characters with those mindsets, but it's definitely not what I would consider the "right" one.

The order should be dissolved. The current circle system hurts more than it helps and seems unnecessarily inhumane to me. Ideally, I'd like to keep the Circles as learning institutions that are open to both mages and regular people for magical education. Mages obviously need learn how to use and control their abilities, and non-mages can understand how magic works to take the edge off their fear.

Oh, sure you can still have templars, as long as they are loyal to their mage masters.

There are times when I entertain making a pro-mage character.

Then I read a KainD post.

Mages are the rightful rulers of Thedas, as such all else should be subservient. Magic is meant to serve man, and those who control it should be served by their lessers. Templars and Andrastian would make fine decorations crucified along the Imperial highway for all to see.

Because Magneto is the only one that has that specific mindset.

No, he's just the one I know the best, so there was far less chance of me saying someone else and actually being wrong.  Also, it was just a joke, man.

One problem is Chantry and it's teachings of magic that feed fear within common folk and made it seem like magic is sin. Chantry could do alot if they changed their approach towards magic and looked more tolerant approaches. Common folks wouldn't see the mages as monsters so much and mages wouldn't feel like they are unwanted and sinful which also seems to lead them to desperate actions (kinda "okay I'm already bad so why not practice blood magic" etc.).

So Chantry needs to get reformed too. Maybe even ceberated from templar order which would rather be under the state than religious institution.

Ok I've actually started to copy and paste my ideal solution for the mage/templar debate. Anyway here it is:

Ideally I'd like to make a compromise between the templars and mages based around the reformation of the circles, with relaxed rules and more focus on education than imprisonment, while still retaining the Templars as a policing force, albeit a lot more accountable. Visits from outside family members and friends would be allowed a lot more, some mages might be allowed out (with templar escorts) for short periods of time for good behavior and relationships between mages would not be "discouraged". Children born of these relationships and would be taken out of the circle and raised elsewhere (unless the child was a mage themselves in which case they would be kept in the circle) as it would be unfair to keep mundane children in the circle. However frequent visits by the parents to their child/children, and vice versa, would be allowed.

I strongly doubt I'll be able to get it to this level of customization but something along those lines would be nice.
