Say you personally lived in the world of Dragon Age, where would you stand on the whole mages vs templars debate? This is not necessarily what your characters have sided with but what you personally would believe..
On one hand, you have the mages who were and many still are responsible for many atrocities, however not all of them are. They've been persecuted and denied freedom but the threat of blood magic and demonic possession is real.
The question is it possible to allow mages to have freedom while still protecting the world from blood mages/abominations/demons? For me, there seems like there needs to be some kind of middle ground but I don't know what that middle ground is.
It would depend on my station in life, wouldn't it? If I was an uneducated, illiterate farmer I'd probably fear mages and want them in Circles. If I was an apostate or Circle mage, I'd probably support anything that would result in free mages and/or the destruction of the Templar Order. If I was an educated nobleman, I'd probably still side with the Templars. Finally, if I was Dalish, I probably wouldn't care as long as my clan could avoid the fighting.

Don't worry, its a valid reason because she is awesome.

Well, the fact that she's not awesome might be problematic.

The legacy of Hessarian, as the Maker intended.

Shouldn't you be worshipping a man with a lamp on his neck clad in a bathrobe somewhere.

Nah, that's valid as any other reason to get Vivienne elected, it's your choice. I prefer Leliana as Divine because I share many of her views of the Chantry and support the changes she wants to make to it (and because she's awesome, too).

No, because that would be idolatry. Also, what does Darinius have to do with Hessarian?

I stand for Thedas, free mages with circles like universities or schools, and Templars who are a police force (not prison guards) specialized in magic, who actually help people.

Oh, I love Leiana as Divine too. Though sometimes I pick Vivienne just because I tend to agree with her during our talks which happens to give me +Vivienne points.

With the exception it isn't.
Really?
Before her, no mage is even allowed into the priesthood of the Chantry. Then suddenly, you have a mage (and one who is a politician first and foremost) suddenly given the single most powerful position in the world's religion to act as a figurehead, who gives mages more power within the system.
Say she does things everything right. Then you have mages as priests. The next mage Divine gets elected and there is no guarantee this one will have Vivienne's same views.
It sets a precedent, and one that lets mages come closer and closer to the true power that Tevinter pretends they are above.
It wouldn't be a true magocracy, but the Chantry wields an exponential amount of influence in the world of Southern Thedas. And if a mage can be Divine, why then can't a mage be a king or queen of a country? Why couldn't the Emperor or Empress of Orlais be a mage? Ferelden?
It's the very first step of a long chain of events that may put mages in charge of the politics of southern thedas, something many people I've debated over the years are absolutely opposed to.
And Vivienne is a politician first and foremost, one who is not above using political power for her own gains, nor is she above manipulating or playing shadowy politics.
There's no guaratee it'll be the rise of a new tevinter. I'm generally pro-reform for the Circle's and want mages to have more freedoms, but I see a great deal of potential for abuse with Vivienne as Divine, and the first step to becoming more like Tevinter.
Some wars are won by inches, as both Fenris and Dorian bring up about Tevinter rebecoming a magocracy.

I wouldn't oppose that, but I do hope the Chantry stays true to the principles and tenants it was founded on and stay out of politics.
From what we've seen in three games....I wouldn't bet on it. It's something to hope for though.
