The most unlikely of choices I know, but it makes me wonder if there is a time limit, or a certain amount of colossal failing that can be generated before it all comes crashing down so to speak.
Has anyone asked what happens if we choose not to lead them?

Hmm gamewise, there should be some since there are many possible endings, one of them being the demons "win".
Story-wise, it will be weird if none of the advisors/leaders take the mantle to do the necessary work. I can picture very well Cassandra or Cullen taking the lead and put on the mantle. For comparison, if your Warden died during the Joining, Alistair will take the lead and try to rally resistance for 5th Blight instead of your warden (Darkspawn Chronicles).

I was actually wondering about that myself. In fact I kind of wonder how the writing goes from lonely survivor of the breach to leader of the Inquisition. It's such an unlikely transition that I almost feel it would be easier for our character to go "NOPE! Not touching that, nuh-uh, nooooo thank you" than taking charge.

Never made sense to me why Cassandra isn't leading the Inquisition. The PC is just some poor schmuck who survived an explosion and got a magic glowing hand as a reward for her/his troubles.
- Cassandra is the one how remade the Inquisition.
- Cassandra is the one who gathered the Advisors.
- Cassandra's the one who has connections to the Divine, the Chantry and the Seekers.
- Cassandra is the one who realized some third party had to stop the Mage-Templar War.
She's the one who should leading this outfit and the Inquisitor should just be specialist that she brings along to close tears. Then again, only being allowed to play a human female warrior might get boring after awhile so maybe that's why Bioware decided to allow the Player to make their own unique character.
Still, Cass for Inquisitor!

I think Cass prefers to lead from the shadows, so she's only manipulating the Inquisitor (in a good way). My Dalish is not going to like that. At all.

It'll probably be like in DAO how you can tell Duncan over and over again that you don't want to be a Warden... but circumstances arise so that you have absolutely no choice in the matter; you either die or become a Warden.

Yeah, I imagine we don't really have the option of pulling a Cartman and, "Screw you guys, I'm going home." What we probably can do is grouse about it at every available opportunity, and deliberately make bad decisions out of some kind of spiteful "haha eff you guys for making me lead" spirit. I imagine that probably ends pretty badly for Thedas, though. ![]()

I wish I could tell Cassandra to shove the Inquisition up her butt.

The same could be said for Alistair in the first game. He was more fit as a protagonist, being related to Cailan and a candidate as the next King.
And he did, in the Darkspawn Chronicles. Almost won, too. But not quite. Perhaps there will be a similar DLC for this game's final mission, but with Cassandra.

I'm banking on you actually being able to stuff up the ending.
A bit like the 'so be it' ending of ME3 (just without the other colours).

I've nothing against her but making her lead would be another story like DAII or Mass Effect. It's still role-playing yes but not in the same category as your warden. That's just my opinion though.

There's never going to be a game in the history of games where a "screw you guys I'm going home" choice will ever matter. Ever. On account of there's no game if they actually let you do that.

Skyrim? You can play the game for hundreds of hours without bothering with the main quest or your destiny as the Dragonborn. I get that it's a different kind of RPG, though ![]()
