There's never going to be a game in the history of games where a "screw you guys I'm going home" choice will ever matter.  Ever.  On account of there's no game if they actually let you do that.

The Elder Scrolls games you can.  Hell, I didnt even realise there was a main story line in Morrowind until after I'd played it for 40+ hours.  The very first thing I did in both Oblivion and Skyrim was say "nope" and wander off on my own.  I've never even "finished" Skyrim.

This is awesome.  I've never even played any of the Elder Scrolls games but I may try one simply because of this.   :D

Never made sense to me why Cassandra isn't leading the Inquisition. The PC is just some poor schmuck who survived an explosion and got a magic glowing hand as a reward for her/his troubles.

- Cassandra is the one how remade the Inquisition.

- Cassandra is the one who gathered the Advisors.

- Cassandra's the one who has connections to the Divine, the Chantry and the Seekers.

- Cassandra is the one who realized some third party had to stop the Mage-Templar War.

She's the one who should leading this outfit and the Inquisitor should just be specialist that she brings along to close tears. Then again, only being allowed to play a human female warrior might get boring after awhile so maybe that's why Bioware decided to allow the Player to make their own unique character.

Still, Cass for Inquisitor!

I have to agree. It makes more sense for Cassandra to be the Inquisitor and in my personal headcanon, my Inquisitor will have a will that states explicitly that if they are to die in an attempt to close The Breach that she is to take command as she is the most suited.

However, I think the reason she doesn't just take charge is because she's a devote Andrastian. This person is thrown into the fade and sees a woman that gives them the power to close the rifts. To Cassandra, serving this so-called "Herald of Andraste" is probably something she considers a great honor. She's never been a leader, really, so much as a "tool" or "sword", if you will, of the Chantry and she takes that job seriously and does what she thinks is best for the Chantry and all of those under it. At least, that's how I rationalize it all to myself. :P

Game, cuts to ending epilogue, and talks about how the veil tore completely and now humans are extinct and demons and other fade creatures live peacefully in what was once called Thedas.

Seriously I hope they give the option, the game shows the stills just like the end of DAO, and caps it all with a "FIN~" when the option presents itself an hour or two in the game.

And then we wait for that person to post on the forums about how he beat the game in two hours and Bioware lied about its 150 hours of gameplay.

Make it happen Bioware.

I was actually wondering about that myself. In fact I kind of wonder how the writing goes from lonely survivor of the breach to leader of the Inquisition. It's such an unlikely transition that I almost feel it would be easier for our character to go "NOPE! Not touching that, nuh-uh, nooooo thank you" than taking charge.

I felt exactly this way in Origins.  "Oh, wow, guys, now ... that ... that sounds like a lot of responsibility and all and - no, I AM grateful for you saving me from that tower, Ms. ... just Flemeth then?  Alright, well, I'm flattered that you think I'm the one to rely on here, but, you see, I'm really all rather new at this and it's only been about a week since I left the Circle tower for the first time in my life and things have just gotten a bit crazy for me what with the king being betrayed by his closest advisor and ally for reasons I have no real grasp of and the darkspawn horde completely overrunning our army, and to be honest I'm feeling a strong urge to just start running away from this whole "Blight" thing as fast as I possibly can, so all in all I'm really not sure I'm the one you want to put in charge of handling this problem..."

I support this approach to storytelling.  I'd like there to be game over screens resulting from story decisions.  There's a part in Batman: Arkham City where

While everything you said makes totally sense, I have a slightly different view on it. It's a "Chantry-thing", something religious and a mysterious survivor with inexplicable glowing hands (and the unique ability to close the rifts threatening Thedas) cuts a fine figure as THE CHOSEN ONE. Whenever faith is mixed in a certain matter, decisions tend to be less rational. That doesn't necessarily mean the Inquisitor has to be more than a figurehead, and there I agree with you. It's a computer-rpg, the player wants to decide, so they can.

Go home and try to close only the near rifts. Nobody would like demons pestering on their houses and eating their food.

I dont know, but i'd like a possibility that after this apocalyptic phases the Thedas would be more torn and in war than before. Except that the Breach is now sealed. That one of my Inquisitors was the incarnation of Evil, an abomination that walks on earth, a terrible villain anda power mad (mage for me) that only cared about his life and the power which could get no matter the cost. And maybe rise a second Tevinter and Thadas fall again to darkness.

I definitely did the same thing in Morrowind. I was proud of myself for finishing Skyrim though. Nowhere near as convoluted. I played for well above 100 hours in Morrowind and never touched the main plot. lol Not the same kind of game as DAI though.

Maybe we will be able to say 'no', but it will go the way the Witcher 2 did (Gerald dies...I remember it because it was such a surprise) and Cassandra kill us. After all (as far as I know) after we are done with the shiny figure we are at her mercy....and she doesn't seem to have much:)

As for the side discussion...have I missed something big? Do we know that we will go straight to the top (as in leader) and not start as....'special tool' and work our way up?

heh...

Reminds me of in Planescape Torment when if you take the silent king's throne, the game ends. It didnt mean you had lost, just that the game has ended. It makes for a good point in that the game over screen is most often thought of as defeat or that you lost the game. In truth game over simply means, the game has ended.

One such end being simply saying "No thanks" to the Inquisition and have the game over screen would be awesomely hilarious imo :)

They've said you help build the organization from the ground up.  My guess would be that Cassandra will direct you to a degree early on, before the Inquisition is really off the ground, but you'll be chosen to lead once it's up and running (i.e. you've claimed Skyhold, and gotten access to the war table).

Well if they deliver the "40 possible endings" then i guess it is possible to finish the game with a bad ending, as in, you fail, the world is doomed, despite your efforts, its seems they werent enough. Everybody that matters either die or run away from the Elder One. Or maybe you can actually kill the Elder One either way but at the cost of pretty much everything - companions/factions/whole countries/etc all being destroyed.

Bioware has proven they can make a very satisfactory ending that totally depends on how you play the game in Mass Effect (ofc im talking about ME2 and the suicide mission, not ME3 endings). Depending on your relationship and your efforts towards your companions you can have a very drastic ending.

The first time i played it I was so shocked with what was happening all around me (everybody just dying!!!! minutes away from each other) that i had to stop before i had a heart attack and reload another save way back into the story to make sure i was going to be able to save them all.

If they apply the same kind of Final Mission to Inquisition (but not just about the companions ofc, you got your power, your influence, resources, armies, etc) you could actually have that kind of ending as in, you didnt lead them (or not good enough at least) so you fall....

In a way, im hoping the ending of Inquisition is gonna be like a between the lines message from the devs: "You see this ending? You see the consequences of your choices through the game? You see what happens if you take the time to get this much power and reputation and armies to fight? Yes, thats what we wanted to do with ME3 ending but then.. reasons.. and it didnt happen... So here you go now, enjoy! We can deliver!"

I hope....

As soon as I read the "it's possible for the demons to win" statement, I was all "Yup. This. This will be one of my playthroughs." If it IS true, and is more of a choice rather than "You didn't do anything or collect anything or buy anything so you die", then i'm thinking my evil guy would like lots of demons...

Cassandra should be the leader.  I really wouldn't mind being under her.

Seriously though, I actually do hope I'm able to make it more of a co-op with her rather then be forced into sole leadership with her just turning into a lackey.  It seems like she does lead to some extent in the beginning, but I hope I can keep it going as the Inquisition grows.

bow chicka bow wow

I agree, though, she seems like she'd be a better leader than any character I could come up with.  I'd like the option to be the friend who pushes her into her real calling.

Cassandra folds her arms and refuses to move from your screen until you comply with her demand to lead them. Each time you click 'no', she says 'bullsh*t'. Basically she doesn't budge from your view until you say yes.
