in the keep there is option to "Defend both Amaranthine and vigil's keep".
In my game I fully upgraded the keep but physically defended the city so in the prologue both place were saved.
is that the option I needed to pick?

Yes. I'm pretty sure that is the only way you can save both, so it has to be.
It's there, under the awakening expansion. It's next to the Architect tile.

That's what I meant... I choose that option just wanted to make sure it was for final mission and not for the patrol side quests.
yeah it is though it could be a different 'story' ingame' after all i choose to defend the city (thats what an real peoplecaring Commander should do xD) knowing though that my fortress is able too survive that after upgrading everything possible, and still ingame it sayd something like it hold itself good but still fall'd and everyone died (what honestly didnt upset me much after all i only left the ones there that i could find myself to like... Anders and that annoying dalish elve) and in the epilogue tell'd me that both stood firmly against the darkspawn... so yeah but to get fully back to the topic
yeah that is the right choice in the keep
