No, it means (if you want to turn tactics off) you have to tell each member when and where to do them, which means lots of pausing and micromanaging.
Hope you like that stuff.

Also, I would imagine the vast majority of feedback Bioware is getting (and trying to fix) right now is about the wonky PC controls and general bugs. I think this issue is really being drowned out, and even if Bioware do hear it, they won't prioritise it high enough to add in in a patch.
I dearly hope I'm wrong. But I won't be getting my hopes up.
Long as these threads stay bumped, I don't see how they can get 'drowned out'
This thread in partic has a semi comprehensive list that needs to be bumped.
Dear Bioware
Please give us the tactics interface back! The current system is sorely lacking compared to the customizable tactics in Origins and DA2. Leaving us with a few options in Inquisition, and minor ones at that, and letting us choose favorites for our party members is NOTHING compared to an interface that truly lets us edit AI behaviour.
The tactics screen used to be amazing, we could easily set up behaviour of the Baldur's Gate type:
"IF
HaveSpell(CLERIC_CURE_LIGHT_WOUNDS)
See(MostDamagedOf(GroupOf(Myself)))
HPPercentLT(MostDamagedOf(GroupOf(Myself)),75)
THEN
Spell(MostDamagedOf(GroupOf(Myself)),CLERIC_CURE_LIGHT_WOUNDS)
END"
Inquistition looks, feels and sounds so good (oh the music is fantastic), the reviews show this (Gamespot 9/10), but there are a number of features that really needs to be fixed, and the tactics screen is VERY high up on that list - please give us the tactics interface back.
"This is the Dragon Age game we've always wanted to make". Another lie to go on the ever growing list.
how can they go from having an extensive tactics system to virtually nothing and call that "the game we've always wanted to make"?
Wow, Bioware is becoming more and more of a joke. A bad one at that.
After beating the game once, and loving it, I still think this is the biggest issue I have with the game.
Not having if-then rules, makes a lot of skills not desirable for the AI to handle, meaning that we actually have less skills than a number already lowered, if we do not micromanage all the time.
I love the real time party combat. That is imposible here, I often feel like it is a single character Action RPG, with 3 bots that do 1 OR 2 skills tops.
bumping this topic, as the more folk respond the more likely Bioware will do something!
Bioware focused too much on graphic and storyline rather than gameplay itself.... we need better tactical plan. like football manager 2015

There is no way to configure WHEN we want them to actually use an ability.
There is no "if" - "then" system at all.
I am a really really sad panda. This was one of the most interesting things of Dragon Age, and it is gone!
Now party management means playing in tactical camera ALL THE TIME, or just play with 1 character. I really dont like it...

Pretty please Bioware?
the combat is one of the most clunkiest I've ever seen. I'm on the verge of quitting after dying over n over to a dragon

Fortunately, I do. I prefer turn based rather than real time for that though.

While I agree with your sentiment, notice the statement made no specifics as to what they wanted. In this case, however, I conclude that they wanted to make a dumb down, buggy, non PC friendly game.
Dorian is still trying to tank everything.
Where is my option for my mages/archers to stay at a distance from enemies? ![]()
In the final boss fight I had to micromanage severely. Positioning of mages is just terrible. Iron Bull was constantly dying. I don't know why. When I took over control he had no trouble. Blackwall was untouchable throughout most of the game, but it wasn't until I took control over him that I realized he is pretty much immortal if played right.
Point in case, AI is terrible. They lose health so fast that their potions just seem to evaporate, but when I limit them they die and remain on the ground instead. Neither options is alluring.
It is annoying that sometimes Blackwall decides to stand around on a rock instead of playing tank or that my mages and archers keep running into the crowd, but what's worse is that they don't even resemble halfway decent playing.
One major gripe I have is that I cannot say "Defend the mage", but have to swap out the names for whoever is in my party.

Yeah...I took on a dragon, and Iron Bull decided to just stand around staring at birds while Dorian was like "I'll tank!!". Then Varric decided that even though he was an archer, he'd be a dagger rogue for a second.
And I'm just standing off in the corner, wondering what these people are smoking before we go out on field work...
Probably all that elfroot I've got lying around...

Thou speaks the truth!
Also, I like your avatar ![]()
I think the lack of tactics is the biggest weakness of the game. The bugs and stuff can be fixed, but the lack of tactics makes combat less fun, and less strategic. You are either trying to nuke them as fast as you can, or pause-command-unpause-fight-pause-command-unpause all the time. It is less natural, and makes tactical command a chore rather than a way of taking command of the battle.

Thank you. Of course, having Sera as an avatar sort of brings out my own inner Sera at times. ![]()

Yeah, trying to use the tactics in this game is horrible. I hate the tactical camera, for example. Feels like I'm a bird staring super zoomed up on my character's head. Can't even see the battleground. Its movement is really clunky, maybe that's just the pc controls. And trying to switch out of the pause and back into holding a button to attack is clunky. I find I'll just put up with the default AI and own things the best I can with my stripped down to nothing mage.

I like that stuff. Love it in fact. Personally, its a nice medium between turn based and real time.
I understand completely... There was a time when freezing people with morrigan meant allister and my main would follow up with a shield bash and many more specific things like that. I'm still on the fence about the ai settings in this game. I haven't figured it out well enough to judge. I know I have to turn down my rogues so they don't suicide and getting a tank to prefer shield wall is intermittent, but I haven't given up. I think the answer lies within.
I've only played a few hours since buying the game. Every time varic shot arrows in the air and rolled away when he wasn't in real danger i pulled my hair out. I want the option when surrounded by 3 enemies use this spell. or wasting powerful spells on weak enemies.. it's constant. Even if the AI was smart (they aren't) an advanced tactics system is still a must for this game. It was still half the fun in previous versions to set up and evolve how your players would behave. I'm really hoping there's an update that can fix this. Then i can resume playing. If not i've just wasted $70 on a game i spent a few unenjoyable hours on
Come on bioware. This is the feature that really separated dragon age from the other RPG's. If you are worried about confusing people, just have a simple and advanced tactics menu

See this thread i created about this and the apologist responses i got just so you get a laugh:

Turns out ITS OUR FAULT hahahahahaha!
Bump..
Playing in real-time is a key feature of all my gaming to date! I enjoy the thrill of having to act in any situation at any given time.. and having your companions do the same is great! (like a football team setting up tactics before playing)
I think it ultimately helped with immersion in to the role of this character you've created..
I like that stuff. Love it in fact. Personally, its a nice medium between turn based and real time.
Thing is in the old system you could do that or set up the tactics. Now you either micromanage or suffer through the AI.
