How tactics and behaviours work (our fears confirmed) :(

I don't understand your heavy sarcasm, a lot of people play Bioware games for tactical combat and limitation of party tactics is going to frustrate them.

I was pointing out how far removed the actual implementation is from what people hoped for. People wanted tactics expanded and instead tactics were gutted. I don't think I was being sarcastic, but if I was, it was just amusement at how thoroughly BioWare decided to obliterate those hopes and dreams.

Question:

Will watch the Video later as I am on the go: So:

Has anyone seen, if we can still set our Followers State to Defensive, Aggessive etc.? I hope they have not removed that thing too.

They removed it sadly. I hope the AI will be decent in avoiding FF.

Fiddling with the tactics menu was something that set Dragon Age apart from other RPGs for me (along with worldstate history import)

I prefer playing as MY character, in third-person action view. I want my team to work together intelligently without needing to guide them myself.

The tactics in DA2 were AMAZING. Once I had decided on a party set-up, I'd spend hours tweaking the tactics menu to get everything working the way I wanted.

If it's gone, I... I don't really know what to say. I'm certainly glad I'm not spending $200 on the Inquisitor's Edition anymore. :(

Doesn't that kinda bring DAI even more into hack&slash/shooter rather than RPG in terms of combat design?

They better REALLY deliver on the story. Otherwise there will be no point calling Dragon Age an RPG.

Well I guess this means I'm going to actually have to micromanage on my nightmare playthrough, sigh...that's going to be very dull. I hope atleast the AI is smart enough to detonate cross class combos, if not micromanaging will just become even more monotonous.

When have you never had to? Don't lie :P

I always avoid using tactics on Nightmare (so every game ever). I would only use them for sustained abilities, intelligent potion use, and random single target abilities usage.

AOE spells (including every warrior attack ever and most upgraded spells) were a nightmare (get it?) to avoid getting hit by without having to manually use while moving your characters.

Now you can control when to use potions, when to stop using abilities, and when to use abilities... using a simplified interface that did the exact same thing you did before.

So frankly this new system changes nothing for me, and it shouldn't for most Hard/Nightmare players.

The tactics system was always excessive anyway. If you want to play real-time while your allies do their work automatically then push it down to Normal or Casual. It's nonsensical for that mode to be "nightmarish" anyway.

I never used the tactics, I found it irritating. Got through Nightmare on both DAO and DA2 no problem managing the team manually. This version I would probably use for band-aid situations but I'd rather micro manage the team and use some gambits to do "logical" things which seem to be in there.  (ie: focus on x person if attacked, use only x amount of potions, use potion at %, etc)

Nope, never had to micromanage on nightmare on either DA games. If you had your tactics tight you didn't have to switch to another character barely once. Heck, some people can even solo on Nightmare. You didn't need micromanaging to play on nightmare. :P

Cause you're the ultimate arbiter of what an RPG is.

Tactics never were part of "RPG". This is unique to Bioware and they have simplified it.

Frankly your dramatic posts are hilarious. Thanks for the laughs.

The scripting was pretty straight forward though. All the spells I told the AI to do, should have been common sense.

It depends what you're trying to do.

Even when I am trying to win, I'm not always just trying to win. Sometimes I want to achieve some specific in-combat result.

That Tactics system in DA2 was like a mini-game, and it was a mini-game I really enjoyed, and it was really well received. Why would they throw it away like that?

What Nightmare are you playing?

Vanilla DA2 on Nightmare was impossible without micromanagement by virtue of one-shot AOEs and assassins.

Vanilla DAO was trash I agree but that's why you download the Combat Tweaks mod :P

If you use weapon and armor packs then your point is moot. Those make the game super EZ mode.

I think we will get a good multiplayer and an average story. Just like in ME3, if you discount endings.

Ouch. Not good if the AI is not smart enough in the end.

Thanks for answering anyway.

Well November 18 we will see the whole truth - or maybe sooner in some Reviews as soon as the Press NDA is void.

Have you even seen the story to "think" that?

You're not thinking you're guessing with zero information.

I agree that the "if" statements could come in handy, like casting barrier if someone's health dropped below a certain threshold.

However, the previous tactics system was an artifact of a different gameplay system. DAI has overhauled combat and we don't know how it's going to be.

Perhaps the usage of tactics was found ultimately unnecessary in this iteration. While it sucks for those who genuinely enjoyed it, I'm certain something else will make up for it.

For me its a non-issue as I fall squarely in the micromanagement corner.    The tactics I set were very minimal just to cover small actions that might need to be taken should I forget to issue an order to that character.

Still, if true, it is sad to have lost such a unique piece of the Dragon Age series.

There are people who soloed the games on nightmare. If you can solo the game, that just proves you don't need micromanaging. Both games weren't that hard, if you abused tactics and you actually knew how to spec out your team, you didn't need micromanaging.

We haven't seen all the options.

The most I've seen done in videos is some previewer clicking next on Follow of Targeting Behavior to change that value to Defend and click next on "player controlled" to get the Inquisition name (I think).

Pretty sure it's everyone's problem seeing that nobody but the developers have completed the game.

Even those who have been spoiled with some images or text know only a drop in the lake.

You can solo the game by using exploits and infinite kiting

That's not playing the game the way it is intended, so the point is moot.

Tactics and behavior should be limited and I support this move on BioWare's part. Having a in-depth, limitless macro system is gamebreaking and defeats the purpose of the experience. We are playing a video game, not watching a video. My companions should be competent enough to make decisions without the need of my control should I want to focus on just playing the Inquisitor. Otherwise, it's irrelevant as tactical camera will give you full control over your party.

Is there that many players who just sit there, twiddle their thumbs, and cackle at themselves while the game plays itself? I really never understood how that is compelling, engaging, or fun at all. Why even buy the game? You may as well look at Youtube and watch gameplay videos and get the same effect.

Some enjoyed twiddling with the tactics system and that's fine really.

I just find the notion of this system being a "gamebreaking" change to be funny.

In a game where the gameplay is based on attrition, NOT micromanaging your characters on the higher difficulties is tantamount to masochism.

Casuals and Normal players are unaffected.

This is by far the least sense-making change they've done for this game. I mean, I get the 8 abilities only, I even somehow get no auto-attack in "action mode" but this? I really don't see any reason to do this.

If you don't like tinkering with tactics, go play on casual. It's awesome when your party works like a well oiled machine while you are controlling only your own character for most of the time.

What if the AI is completely incompetent or doesn't work at all like you'd want to? THAT's gamebreaking right there...

No! No one is sitting there cackling, twiddling their thumbs. That's stupid. I'm playing my character. And fighting while my team is following my gameplan and fighting..well.

Tactical cam is the one where you're sitting up there taking all the time in the world. The combat paused. I prefer not to pause the combat, yet have a good plan in place for my followers to follow.

I have not exploited either games, simply just used tactics for my team. Micromanaging was never required in my case. As for the youtubers who have beaten the games on solo, they may have exploited the game. But that still does not discount the fact they soloed it. The point is the games weren't that challenging using exploits or not.
