So...

The new Call of Duty game has a bold proposal of having a $50 Season Pass for its Multiplayer DLC, including not only maps but also entire gameplay modes like its iconic Zombies.

Now, people who talk to me may know I believe that the artificial $60 price tag on all AAA video games is a huge flaw in the industry and that I would be agreeable to different price tiers on games, including higher prices up to or over $100. You may also know that I am a proponent of the concept (although usually not the actual implementation) of a DLC Season Pass or other types of upfront DLC price bundling.

That being said, I am completely against all dis crap.

The FPS is a genre rife with shallow single player campaigns that, instead, focus on MP experience with its resources. In fact, there are new titles out such as Titanfall or Evolve that are SOLELY multiplayer matches, where the question arises if they justify their full $60 price tag to begin with.

Now, Adavnced Warfare does look like it is trying to incorporate some new mechanics outside of the usual type for the series into the game and that its single player campaign may be more than a boring ten hour endeavor. Maybe still only ten hours, but still something more novel than usual.

But the game is still primarily a Multiplayer product. To me, the game's base $60 price tag should imply that it's shallow SP segment would have future and ongoing MP support as part of the package. To have extra maps, weapons and even gameplay modes sold separately is not very consumer friendly. But to have them bundled as a DLC package the same price as the game itself is downright audacious.

Is this Activision's response to complaints that MP is far too often nickel and diming players with microtransactions and constant DLC? If so, I'd say it seems like a poor move. This is pricing the wrong things and utilizing the wrong models to see innovation and creativity in the industry. In all honesty, I'm more scared than mad, simply because it is Call of Duty and it will be wildly successful, encouraging other developers to adopt it as well. As this has the potential to double the price of gaming across the board, but with the extra revenue used by doing so focusing even more on multiplayer development than ever before. That, to me, is a big detriment to the gaming industry and any attempts to move the hobby into the perception of a strong story telling or unique gameplay medium.

What's everyone else's thoughts?

$108 for the complete package? If you think that's bad, imagine how much the Sims 4 DLC is going to cost.

I want to say that this is typical COD stuff and nobody should be shocked. On the other hand I probably won't get another chance to post this picture.

GODDAMNIT CHRIS! YOU BEAT ME TO IT.

Oh Highmoon Studios,

Remember when you released War For Cybertron? Which was a great if flawed game? Filled with love and respect for Transformers.

Then Fall of Cybertron, which improved on WfCs problems, and included Grimlock.

Finally, you came out with Deadpool. A fun, if very repetative game, with a lotta humor, and Deadpool.

You guys really have fallen from grace.

Shocked? No. I guess I'm not shocked. Just... sad. Sad that such a blatant MP cash grab was done. Even more sad that it will likely work.

Isn't this similar to Battlefield 4's Premium membership?

Publishers gonna publish.

It all comes down to what someone considers a fair value. I know that Bf4+Premium was at 110€ when I purchased the two and despite the game having been an optimization mess and just gotten to a point where I'd say it's good (not brilliant, but decently playable), I never regretting having spent the money. I had tons of fun with it and am still having lots of fun. And we're still one, potentionally even more DLCs to go.

I consider 110€ good value for a whole year of gaming (just checked my Battlelog profile: 521 hours ingame time) and that number will continue to increase.

Haha.

I bought BF4 for $20 and I think I've only played it twice.

Um... why isn't this in the CoD: AW thread?

Personally, I don't care about MP but if you're going to do it anyway, I'd rather you followed ME3's example.

To each their own.

I've purchased AC1, 2, Brotherhood and Revelation as bundle during a Steam sale for around 30€ total and only played around three hours into AC1 before I uninstalled the game disappointedly.

Like i said, it all comes down to what people consider fair value and whether that ties in with the market value or not.

I know COD:AW is the example, but I had intended this to be a broader discussion of DLC pricing across the board. I may update the topic title and my OP to reflect that.

I don't consider a MP only game to instantly be not worth the $60 price tag as it depends on the amount of content in the game. If you're going to have a terrible and forgettable SP that I'll beat in 4-5 hours anyway before focusing on MP, I'd rather get those extra resources spent on MP.

That said, Titanfall still wasn't worth the $60 price tag in my opinion because the MP had a lack of content anyway. It seemed more like rather than shifting resources from SP to pure MP they just cut SP and kept the $60 price tag.

As for DLC I like the idea of it, but it's been so horribly exploited like most good ideas in the gaming industry that I'm not as keen on the idea anymore.

Nothing new Activsion likes to set ridiculously high prices for its DLC especially for the CoD franchise.

Is a $50 season pass that much more expensive than normal for Activision?  They've always over charged but people seem to buy the **** so good on them.

I don't really buy season passes in general, I haven't made up my mind about Destiny's though. On the surface its seems to be over priced, but I'd be getting it for a reason to hang out with friends more than anything.

Xbox users will have to wait a year to get two extras strikes (one from each expansion) so basically they are paying the same amount as PS players for less content.

Now obviously I strongly oppose the withholding of game content like that, but it doesn't really bother me that the price is the same. Would it make Xbox players feel better if the DLC's were one dollar cheaper or something, probably not.

Activision doesn't seem to understand this "consumer trust" thing very well.

While I don't particularly mind that many games especially FPS are putting more effort into the online multiplayer, the fact there is a 50 dollar DLC pack is ridiculous and exploitative to gamers. It's not so much that multiplayer is "harming" the creativity games it's the overpriced DLC made by the the big businesses a la Activision.

Go to the other COD:AW thread. Some people are really satisfied.
