Well someone people prefer to plan it out, that's fine by me. Not any less valid, just not how I roll.
I enjoy planning out my 2nd, 3rd, etc, but the first? Meh, different strokes I suppose.
Some people like to plan things to the last detail on their first run through. It may not be how you do it, but it doesn't make them wrong for enjoying it in a different manner to you.
I'm currently doing my 7th run through of Origins and I've planned it all out, I'm not losing any sense of immersion from it. In fact I'm finding more enjoyable to see all my planning pan out.
Excuse me, but when did I say anyone was "wrong" for doing something differently than myself? Try not to hop on your soapbox so quickly, especially when you're putting words in another persons mouth.
I plan my other play-through's too. Which is why I said FIRST PLAY-THROUGH very clearly. There is a huge difference between planning everything out after you've beaten the game, and spoiling everything before you've even put the disc in.

Unlike everyone, I am playing with the guide right in front of me. I want to have a perfect playthrough, so before I even load the game I will read the guide cover to cover so that I can adapt my Keep World State to the most optimal one (still unsure what to do with buddy's sword, if I should buy it or return it).
I always use walkthroughs for any game. A friend asked me how I was able to get all my companions to survive in ME2, and I was like, dude, it's one wiki search.
I like perfect playthroughs and I genuinely don't like making choices that end up being mistakes

Already have it ordered just because I like to have the extra game swag. Yes, I consider the Collector's Edition game guide to be swag ![]()
For planning I tend to use the guide to know what companions like and what their crisis points are. Also I like to get all the companions ASAP, so I use the guide to make sure I don't go too far into the story trying to get my buddies that some side-quests expire.
For the rest I might check how to get through big events if I trip a few times, like the Landsmeet in DA:O or how to get the Arishok's respect in DA2. Other stuff depends on who I'm playing as, so I don't look at consequences too much.

First time play blind, every time after that use every bit of knowledge available online.

First time go blind (at least story wise) on normal/easy difficulties, maybe some spoilers walkthrough for the romances part since I don't like to mess this part.
Then second playthrough with guides probably, on harder difficulties if possible and trying to make different choices.

Blind, the first play through. Then guide or google to find out what I missed. And how to keep alive anyone that I liked that died.

Blind until I get stuck or am unsure on a decision then spoiler- got the guide but not being delivered until 5-7 days after I get the game. So a week's play of total blindness.

1) Check to see if Hawke is romanceable.
2) Play blind.
3) Play with the guide to get everything I undoubtedly missed the first time around.
My only caveat for the blind playthrough is that I must look up the puzzle solutions since I'm so bad at them. Anyone else obsessed with the astrarium?

First: blind, roleplaying a version myself.
Second: semi blind, meaning I'll play normally but when I get the feeling I might be overlooking things, I google. Roleplaying a version myself
Third and onward: metagamed to hell and back, roleplaying whatever. Usually starting out with simple character traits like: hates x, loves y, fancies z.
I completely skipped on DA2, I wonder how much of an issue this will be.
I'm currently doing my 7th run through of Origins and I've planned it all out, I'm not losing any sense of immersion from it. In fact I'm finding more enjoyable to see all my planning pan out.
My later Mass Effect runs were metagamed from start to finish, and the roleplaying in those, for me, was the best. Tough at times to play an anti AI Shepard, but worth it.

Only reason I'd use a guide is for puzzles that I'm too dumb to figure out and I'm sure some kind soul will post the puzzle solutions by the time I get to them anyway.

I always enjoy it most when I play blind through the first time, then guide the next.

Looking at the stars, yes, oh yes.
First run will be sans Collector's Edition Guidebook. However, after that...tabs galore. I would be embarrassed for anyone to see my Skyrim Guide...A LOT of color-coordinated tabbing was done.

I haven't bought a game guide in years. When I bought Mass Effect 3 the clerk tried to sell me the guide, I just laughed at them, it was good times.
I wouldn't say I'm playing the game blind though, the quest log will spell out everything quite well, and the mini map pretty much shows you where to go. Long gone are the days when you get thrown into a zone and have no idea at all where to go, Dragon Age Inquisition will tell you straight up the direction you need to go, even more reason why guides are a gimmick to take even more money from gamers.

... dayumn.
The game is so ridiculously clear about who you should pick for what task.
I used a guide to kill off all the people I wanted to have killed off, on later playthroughs. Finishing the SM without deaths is hardly something difficult. (and one of my larger annoyances with ME2. A perfect SM should not have been possible)

A kindred spirit! All my DA and ME guides have color coded tabs. ![]()

Blind for the first playthrough... Though that hardcover strategy guide does look nice.
