I usually play blind first time around and only use online help if I get really stuck.  I might get a guide later but only if its collectable and has some art in it.

Blind, like I do with all first playthroughs. I only use an online guide/walkthrough if I'm really struggling with something.

Well, I like the collectors versions of the guides (have them for DAO and DA2 as well) because of the art (yes, I've pre-ordered the DAI Art book as well) and the additional lore they contain.  And before someone replies to me with "U R teh STUPID! That will be scanned and uploaded 2 ROFL!", I personally don't agree with doing that.  It violates copyright and denies the owners of the material their royalties when people upload scans.  Maybe others are OK with getting the exclusive material this way, but I'm not. I can afford to pay the cost, and not doing so would go against my personal morals.

As for the original poster's question, I am buying the book but the first game is planned to be "mostly blind" (I've watched trailers and read some minor spoilers on the net, so completely blind is a no-go already).  I'll make my best effort not to use it much, other than build-planning with skills/specialization information.  I may also take a peek to figure out the shortest quest path to recruiting Dorian, because I'm already impatient for him and I don't know if my willpower will hold up to not looking  :D .  If I get stuck on a section that's getting frustrating, I may look for that as well (*sends side-long look at The Fade in DAO* <_<  ), but only if desperate.

Well, with all those videos I've watched until now, the beginning of the game will hardly be "blind" :P. But the rest of my first playthrough will be blind, unless I'll get stuck at some crazy difficult puzzle, than I'll probably use Wiki or sth. But I've bought a very thick notebook lately, so maybe I'll take some notes ... ^_^

I ordered the Collector's Edition Guide partly because it will look good on my bookshelf and partly because I can really use the bookmarks.  Before I play, I will go over the sections the outline game play and crafting mechanics. I will also skim through weapons, stats and leveling.  Will read the synopsis for each recruitable (sp?) NPC and how different armor/weapon stats affect a character.  For the first play through that will be about it.  I generally like completing the quests and story elements as I go and, unless I'm having real trouble with a mob or Boss, will not use my guide too much beyond getting educated in game mechanics and stats.

After the first run, I'll probably devour the darn thing.  Looks like I will need more thin colored post-its.

It will most likely take me months to finish the game because I will only have a few hours a day to play this. So I'm getting the guide because I am most likely only going to do one playthrough.

1) Go blind.

2) Cry over pretty much every decision.

3) Google everything afterwards.

:P
