BIOWARE, it's 2010, players should have a same-sex romance option.

So does the idea of "Garrus-mance"...
Yeah, that too...

Yeah it seemed like a step back from ME1 which I didnt understand, not complaining, it just seemed like the devs would have said: hey we did this much in ME1 so we can do equal to that if not more in ME2. I dont really care either way, I see gaming as interactive movies so I feel like M games should have freedom to match that of an R-Rated movie.

It's their damn choice. What's with everyone craving for homosexual romance options? We do have a lot of control over what is going on in the story, but if they want shepard's sexuality to be "set in stone", let it be that way.
It's nothing to do with Shepard's sexuality. For all intents and purposes, you can play the role of a gay Shep regardless. She/he will just go without a romance.
It's more to do with the supporting character's sexual preferences being "set in stone"

I doubt it's that Shep's sexuality is set in stone. For one, femSheps get Liara in the first game. For another, this is a game about choice and about defining the type of character you want to play. In a game that also touts romantic choice, the option for a same-sex romance should be included. And lastly, this is BioWare. Since Jade Empire they've shown they're comfortable with including same sex romances. Dragon Age was the most recent testimony to this. There's no reason to keep it out of ME2. If you don't like it, don't seek it out, but I don't think it's wrong to want the choice included in the first place.

Then they'd rather stop the whole "It's your story, your Shepard, your world" marketing.
Cuz in my world, Shepard is certainly not a straight girl.

This!
Ultimately I think it has more to do with people wishing to live out their own fantasies via games than actually just going with the story and character development set out by the writers. If Shepard was written as Gay, Bi or straight....who cares either way as long as it is true to the writing.

It was going to be an option in ME1 but it seems they chickened out at the last moment. :innocent:
Bah. <_<
Also: Lol at all the Shep is straight in canon. If that was the case shouldn't he/she have a set LI? Heck in that case why let us choose what Shep looks like? Why don't we all just stick with default male Shep, striaght, romancing Liara and call it a day.
Oh wai-
That wouldn't be our Shep anymore would it?
Though honestly I wouldn't mind. I'm used to Jrpgs.

I didn't really mind the lack of a cutscene, but I was actually really impressed with how BioWare have handled Garrus/Tali's scenes. I won't say anymore but people won't be disappointed, they put a LOT of thought into them.Operative84 wrote...

Except, Bioware markets the game as 'putting the player in Shepard's shoes to live out their space fantasies and blah blah blah'.

And, romance possibilities are a big part of these 'space fantasies'. If not, there wouldn't be 6 heterosexual romance possibilities along with a slew of hook-ups.

And that is fine, but if the developers choose to have Shepard in any particular sexual orientation, players are still given the choice to romance, or not within those parameters. Ultimately who cares considering the actual orientation of Shepard does not affect the plot in any way really.

For me at least, it's not about the sex scenes, but about the character. I have 6 sheps. 2 romances Ash, 1 romanced Liara, and the others were celibate. At least one of those is gay on account of all the slashy lines you can get with Toombs if you're a Sole Survivor. I like the idea that the savior-of-humanity, macho man extraordinare is gay. It's a nice change from the stereotypes we usually see. For me, that She will always be gay. If that means no romance for him, so be it. But it would be really nice to see that part of his characterization expressable in-game. I hope that makes sense.

No, the orientation of Shepard does not affect the plot. So, why not give Shepard the option to be gay or lesbian? Why not give players a chance to role-play their Shepard in that way?
What if BW decided to make all Shepard's gay and limit romance possibilities to just the same sex. Do you think people would be happy with romancing within those parameters?

I can appreciate that. I just don't think it is as big a deal as people make it out to be. If they had of made Shepard completely Gay with no hetero option, I would be fine with that too. I just doesn't matter that much to me. It seems like a lot of people play this game just for the romance options where as I play it to kick some alien **** and save the galaxy from doom. But to each his own I suppose.

Point taken. Like I said...I am fine with it either way. It wouldn't ruin the game for me in any way if Shepard was written as all gay either. But I don't play Mass Effect for the romancing anyways.

I'm with you on that point. Story is most important to me. But some people are just frustrated to see 4 het options for male Shep and no gay one. Especially in a game about choice. And I do think the romance adds another depth to the story. The story in ME changes for the character if he romances Ash, for instance. It makes the Virmire choice more important, IMO.
