Okay, so until this thread gets locked just please go spend the energy you were using to troll the forum and educate yourself: http://medievalpoc.tumblr.com/
Also, dragons, magic, qunari, darkspawn, elves, etc.. And you're concerned about black people! Ha, I wonder why.
So you just want to silence debate and discussion? This is no troll thread. I'm curious considering that Vivienne is the first Black person we've ever seen in the DA universe.

Stop being hostile. Black people did originate from Sub-Saharan Africa and they then migrated to the north where they were sadly enslaved and to the far south where they were again, sadly enslaved by the Dutch and Brits towards the age of colonialism.

"based on" isnt the same thing as being exactly the same thing. It is quite possible they have different physiological traits in that part of Thedas, not everything has to be a 1 to 1 of earth. Your premise is odd, becuase it assumes in Thedas things need to have a 1 to 1 correlation to medieval Europe. I dont think there needs to be much more of an explanation then that, and it could very easily be explained that certain physiological traits are more rare then others, specifically in that part of Thedas. So I'm not really seeing a problem here.

I dont know how you read hostility unless I typed it, its clear this thread is a troll thread even after all the information I and other posters answered for you yet you continue to drag it on solely because [your definition of black by a non black person] is in a fictional video game get help, and quick. Bad excuse, skin tone doesn't mean much. Vivienne has clear sub-Saharan features that Duncan and even Isabella lack.
That's very true. But they may be different ethnicities despite being the same nationality.
Re: racism, the people of thedas don't see colour or gender. They only care if you're short or your ears are pointy.

I'd say she's the first non white person. Which naturally brings about the question of where she's from. Even dwarves and elves are white

Oh, and for those who are curioused , there have been records of dark-skinned Africans in Tang dynasty China (618–907 AD), since they can show up as far as China ,I don't think it's too far stretch to have them in medieval Europe

Well, considering how Thedas is heavily based on Medieval Europe, i dont understand why their is a sub-saharan person in it. Not saying it's a bad thing, but there should be some context on where black people come from.
Oh dear, I really wish I had a link right now to that lovely Tumblr of Africans appearing in Western art throughout the ages. That brilliant website would just clear this problem up.

Not all people living in the same country look exactly the same. People's skin tones tend to blend from one to the other throughout the population.
The lighter skinned Rivaini are probably those that live near the border of Antiva and they may get progressively darker as one moves toward the east. The same thing occurs IRL. Populations mix with their neighbors.

Why shouldn't the Rivaini be dark-skinned? They're far north of Thedas after all.
I mean, if we had a majority of black people in Orlais or Ferelden, I'd cry foul too. But people from hot climates having dark skin is not exactly a setting-breaking heresy even before you account dragons and darkspawn.
Plus, I'd rather the world have diversity in facial features, rather than everyone be Caucasian with white to brown skin tones like in the previous games.

Rivainis were always dark-skinned. As others have suggested, it was purely because of engine limitations and lack of variety in assets that we had such a limited choice in DAO. BioWare has confirmed this. Vivienne looks absolutely stunning and I cannot wait to get to know her character and see what her true motivations are in DAI.

No there are not, Briala and Fenris are not "white" for example. You also have DA:I CC that proves that any race can have a very different range of features or skin colors.
Facial features != skin colors.

...darker, and darker?
Duncan was light skinned in DA:O
In DAII they darkened Isabella, she looks like a Roma gypsy.
IN this new DA game, apparently Vivienne is a Rivaini and she is BLACK.
It doesn't make sense in this medieval European setting to darken the pigment up of one nation. Where do these sub-Saharan esque people come from? Why aren't they more prevalent considering that historically, negroids reproduce more rapidly than Caucasoids and negroid features are dominant compared to recessive Caucasoid features when interracial mingling occurs?
What are the Rivaini people? They cant be white, gypsy and black. If there are both white, gypsy and black people in Rivain, are there any racial tensions?
Duncan and Isabella were pretty dark, imo, and go figure people of varying degrees of skin tone can live in the same place.
Really, look at a map of Europe and Africa and draw me a line where the black people stop and the while people begin. You can't. And honestly I would really rather Bioware keep the racial tensions in their game between the fantasy races (human, elf, qunari, etc) and leave real world racial tensions out of it, we don't need any of that in a fantasy game when there's already plenty in the real world.
Edit: also lol at the intentional or not implication that medieval Europe had no black people in it.
