This discussion needs better factual foundations.  Caucasoid does not mean white or European, outside of the use of the term in theories about  racial superiority. From the Free Dictionary.

1. (Peoples) denoting, relating to, or belonging to the lighter-complexioned supposed racial group of mankind, which includes the peoples indigenous to Europe, N Africa, SW Asia,and the Indian subcontinent and their descendants in otherparts of the world

Causasoid, as used in physical anthropology and in other sciences, is based on distinct facial bone structures which are common to people normally considered to be Arab (also sub-Saharan) and Indian as well as northern European. This relates to the old saying that there is more variation within a supposed race, then there is between different racial groupings.

(There is also no established genetic link between skin colour and birth rates, as claimed by the OP -- why would there be?)

On that basis, most of the variation in DA is already explained. All we need to add to that is that Rivaini is like North Africa, where there is a fair range of people of distinct facial characteristics and skin colour.

Why focus on just the Rivaini? The Qunari have skin tones varying from bronze to grey to onyx.

The dwarves and elves also have varying degrees of skin tones (I'm actually suprised all the dwarves arent a very very pale colour considering they never see the sun)

Yeah, the dwarves alone are far more puzzling than the Rivaini. Living your entire life underground (never mind the logistics of that) for centuries at least should not end up with you looking like short humans.

To say nothing of Elves apparently being immortal in ye olden days. And let's not get into magical creatures. But na, screw that, apparently black people in hot climates are bad mmmkay.

No there are not, Briala and Fenris are not "white" for example. You also have DA:I CC that proves that any race can have a very different range of features or skin colors.

Facial features != skin colors.

The CC means nothing if no such characters exist in the world, the PC can be completely outrageous and lore breaking.

That's exactly what I mean. Vivienne is first character with very non-white features, like her nose and mouth.

...darker, and darker?

Duncan was light skinned in DA:O

In DAII they darkened Isabella, she looks like a Roma gypsy.

IN this new DA game, apparently Vivienne is a Rivaini and she is BLACK.

It doesn't make sense in this medieval European setting to darken the pigment up of one nation. Where do these sub-Saharan esque people come from? Why aren't they more prevalent considering that historically, negroids reproduce more rapidly than Caucasoids and negroid features are dominant compared to recessive Caucasoid features when interracial mingling occurs?

What are the Rivaini people? They cant be white, gypsy and black. If there are both white, gypsy and black people in Rivain, are there any racial tensions?

They're probably a lot like American people, or Mexican people, or Spanish people, or English people. They have a wide variety of skin colors, and all bleed the same color, red.

ooo, interesting, I never heard of this theory, might take some time to look it up.

You get a like for providing that silver lining ;)

No, I'm wrong.  I was thinking of MT. Kilimanjaro. Ignore the comment.

The dehumanization of black people is a relatively recent phenomenon in history. Don't make the mistake of assuming Europeans in 700 ACE would treat an African with the same kind of stigma they would now.

Either way this is off topic. OP's statement is easy to answer, these sub-Saharan Africans came from Rivain because the writers wanted it to be that way. I for one am happy for it, because It gives the world a sense of size beyond just white medieval Europe.

More importantly why don't they look like moles? Surely they've had enogh time to outgrow their useless eyes and evolve new and more useful appendages.

??? Have you seen a non-white person? It's obvious to look at but harder to point out, especially without sounding insensitive: Low brow ridges and nose bridge, wide nostrils, very curly hair, very straight hair, full lips, epicanthal folds, dark eyes. Consult your closest white supremacist if you want more details.

The original question of the op was more to do with the different looks of various Rivain persons.

First of all, despite what predominantly white Western schools may have you believe, people of African descent did in fact exist and live in Medieval Europe. You can actually see depictions of people of ethnic races in the art of the time period. So, really, I expect to see more than Caucasians in a video game's world, created in learned 2014, based on Medieval Europe. So, if anything, BioWare's representation holds better accuracy than most media that depicts Medieval Europe.

Secondly, the majority of the world falls under the "ethnic" category and yet 90+% of every video game character, especially if they're a protagonist, is white. So, y'know, if anything is incorrect, it's that.

Cheers.

Right, and they look different because the writers wanted them too.

I'm just wondering where they hid during Dragon Age Origins and 2, thats all.

There have always been dark skinned NPCs and Isabella was supposed to be black. I blame poor modeling and lighting for why they generally looked like white people with a tan rather than intent. Now that they have a better engine they can actually make varying facial features yay! (No more DA2 same-face syndrome)

I didn't know you created the world of Thedas...

Guys we found the maker!

Just because something has a few analogous features that inspire armors etc doesn't mean it functions the way you think i.e your post.

Qunari?

Thedas is not medieval Europe.

Even if it was, Europe was not exclusively white. There were people of color in Europe. There are these things called boats. Elizabeth I was concerned about the black people in London. There are records of dark-skinned people as members of the Scottish court, I believe, as well. There are depictions of black saints from medieval times (not sure of exact period).

Darker skin tones did not come across well because of lighting in the older engine. Isabela was always intended to be black, but it didn't show. I believe the devs have said that Rivaini skin tones are darker, but run a range between comparatively light-skinned and very dark. This is possible. Also, we've seen examples of dark-skinned people outside of Rivain, so it stands to reason we'll run into them wherever we go to at least some extent.

And now I leave, and I can't do so fast enough.

Edit: Oh, and the term G#@$% (usually used for the Roma people) is generally considered a slur. So unless you're Roma and wish to identify that way, I'd lay off that particular terminology.

It's possible come to think of it, or they could have simply changed their minds and decided Rivians should be "proper black" - the Qunari retcon between DAO and DA2 was ridiculous. And remember the CG trailer where sten was just a large african man? It was made by a contracted company, but I wonder what Bioware's instructions were.
