Do we know if we will be able to play as other species yet?

Not certain, but it is highly unlikely that we will. There is sure to be a return of the online co-op though. You can definitely play as aliens again there.

This.
This is an optimal way to reconcile fans desire to play as aliens and staying within developing time constrains and budget without risking the quality of the overall game.
As much a I'd LOVE to play a whole singleplayer campaign as an alien, this is impossible in today's developing process.
Maybe in the future game making will become a lot more efficient and even cheaper, such series like ME would greatly benefit from this then.
Imagine ME game as huge as a MMO game, but constructed as a SP game with optional COOP... gamer's heaven..

The likelihood of ever playing as a alien as the main protagonist in a future game is almost zero percent, and I'll explain why. The issue is purely practical. The more peculiar in nature the anatomy and structure of the alien is, the more difficult it is from a storytelling perspective. The same issue was addressed in SWTOR. You can't have a Wookiee as a protagonist because they don't speak Basic. You also can't have an ewok or a droid as a protagonist because they can't do romance scenes or convey emotions the way a human can.
We aren't even bringing in the issues of animation work and building skeletons that would work for non-humanoids. So unless the actual species we are dealing with is almost human (Asari, Quarian, etc.), having another protagonist for the story is out of the question. This is just the reality of game development and the actual limitations some of these aliens have compared to humans. I would never expect to play anything else other than a human unless it's the cooperative multiplayer. It's purely a practical matter.
I can see possibly in another Mass Effect or two that Bioware may have a few racial choices to choose from. Dragon Age: Inquisition after all has three races, each with their own unique skeletal build and animations. The new generation of consoles should be able to handle a few more options. But Mass Effect "4" having multiple racial choices in single player? Highly doubtful, friend.

That's not entirely true. Asari and Turian PCs wouldn't require that much work. The Asari are basically blue humans and the Turians barely need any facial animations. Those two species are as humanoid as it gets in the ME universe.
Salarians and Krogans on the other hand would need an entire set of unique animations and voice actors.
1 minute long intro only followed by jokes, rambling about schematics of next ME game title, talking way too much about Shepard epicness and other stuff related to mostly about original trilogy is just not related to what we know so far about next ME game.
I'm disappointed OP.

It's not happening because it would be less appealing to the masses.

You could still play as a human.
We'll see.
Well, in DAI, the main character has 2 male and 2 female voice actors, so you could have a female/male human, a female asari (obviously) and a male turian, at least with the same number of voice actors. Also, couldn't you use the same voice actor for some races, for example, add flanging effect for the turian, speed up and slightly raise the pitch for the salarian, deepen the voice for the Krogan and use the human voices for the quarian. Also, you could add robotic clickyness to the voice so a geth character- OK, that's just wishful thinking! ![]()
What I'm saying, is that with 4 voice actors and clever use of voice effects, you could easily play as different races. They can all say the same lines with just a few variations. If they can support 4 races in Dragon Age, why not Mass Effect?

I'm not sure if I agree with this based on the non-human vs. human players seen in ME3 Multiplayer. There was an obvious interest in playing as a non-human character.
I thought that Sirta Foundation was going out of business? Or it was thought that they were going out of business?
I hope they manage to survive - they were my favorite store on the Citadel.

On the other hand, I think the number of human Wardens is higher. Don't have official stats though

The difference here is dwarves are short humans, elves are skinny humans with pointed ears, and qunari are large human with horns. There is no change in the actual skeleton for animations. The only technical issue BioWare had to overcome was head pivoting due to looking around at other characters depending on height discrepancy. Just imagine trying to play as a Hanar or an Elcor... Not going to happen. You need species that are humanoids to really have any chance of these as protagonists.

Feel free to actually read my entire post and you would see I recognized Asari and Quarians as possibilities since they are human with slight alterations. Turians on the other hand, no. They are bird people. Their facial structure is limited compared to a human and they cannot convey emotions. They also are severely limited in their animations (have you seen their anatomy?). Very few established species currently in Mass Effect would actually be feasible to pull off the role as a protagonist. Asari are likely out of the question because they are a female-only species (BioWare is all about gender diversity). Quarians are possible, but would be difficult based on their weak immune systems so you couldn't see their faces and armor customization would be limited. Suffice it to say, humans are just easy defaults to rely on. Go figure.

For what it's worth, I also don't see Bioware creating alien PCs for reasons already mentioned here. And I like that. To me, part of the ME charm is about encountering strange new species. Humans are the best vehicle for this, because we're human.
Perhaps there's something to be said about, say, playing a Turian who first encounters humans, and seeing what that's like, but I just don't see Bioware putting in the massive amount of effort required.

I don't see how you could claim that people played non-human classes because they were non-human rather than because they afforded different gameplay options.
I liked my Turian sentinel because I liked his abilities. That he was a Turian was secondary.

It is about gameplay but I'm pretty confident that it is also about the "roleplaying" aspect. Read the multiplayer forums and how popular all the special challenge threads were that involved playing as a specific character and all the story people put into creating them.
I want to play as a non-human. It doesn't need to be everything but just Human, Asari or Turian choice would add a lot imo. I don't think it is impossible, although the story would have to be written with that in mind. ME1-3 would not have worked. Most of the animations would have to be done or of some benefit for multiplayer and cutscenes.
unique animations and voice actors.
Romance scenes. You just had to be the kindle to light that fire, didn't you?
Every non-human protagonist will end up humanized regardless, it's just how it works. Making a truly alien protagonist will make people not relate to him/her. Take Inquisition, for example. One of the reviews (PCGamer if I'm not mistaken) mentioned how human did the qunari and elves feel. For me that makes playing a non-human pointless.
To make a, say, truly turian protagonist they'll have to extensively show turian society and culture. It's a given for humans
