This had TONS of implications in it when you found it in DA2, combinged with the enigma in Kirkwall and it seems that dwarves were right there doing all kinds of experiments, even during the times of Arlathan(may even explain why darkspawn hit dwarves so hard). I mean if you think about it, the dwarves had to have something going on, when Their deeproads stretched as far as the Anderfels, Free Marches(going under the sea) and Ferelden.
Hopefully we get more information on this, since to me, this is some of the most interesting stuff to come out of the lore. It has so many possible implications, and then when you read the codex for the profane: The profane have lingered in this place for ages beyond memory, feeding on the magic stones until the need is all they know.
It makes you think, specially when in the thaig it talks about them crawling their way through the stone, combined with the statues and it almost feels like an extinct race was part of dwarven society or at least an offshoot of the dwarves that were left behind, even prior to the darkspawn(assuming the dark spawn are not older then the blights). Hopefully they touch-up more on this in DA:I or the DLC/Expansions that I would expect would follow.
Between this and the idea that the dragons blood is the blood of thedas, and it makes you wonder what the red lyrium truly is. Curious what was being experimented with down there, and what impact the death of the dragons had on the fade and Thedas. Am I the only one who found this to be the most fascinating aspect of DA2? I think the implications here will have drastic shifts in the perspective of Thedas history and the views on the fade.
