While reading through a different thread, the idea of including a toggle to allow/disallow gay content to appear in the game came up once again. I bring this up only as background. Please do not discuss that idea in this thread.

But it did get me thinking. How would you feel about the idea of selecting your PCs sexuality during character creation? Straight, Gay, Bisexual, or Ambiguous. The game itself doesn't change based on what you pick (if you select "Straight", for example, a gay companion would still be a gay companion) but maybe some of your background and the way certain NPCs interact with you might be different. One of your childhood friends might mention a previous relationships you've had, a LI that matches your sexuality might hit on you first, or maybe even your dialog options could change in specific situations. If you choose "Ambiguous", maybe the sex scene is replaced with the two of you getting down to some hardcore cuddling.

Does this idea appeal to you? Why or why not? If you like the idea or are on the fence, what could make it better or more appealing?

I think it would be clumsy.

Unless there is a bunch of similar questions it would put a lot of emphasis on sexuality at the start. The main advantage is referencing past relationships but that is something which should be treated with a lot of respect for player agency anyway. For anything after play commences it seems to me to be unnecessarily restrictive.

However, if the game were to include a more detailed choices for backstory, then options relating to past relationships could be interesting, so long as they weren't restricting later.

That would be unneeded as it alreadt exists, its called the player. If you're straight you don't flirt with the gay person, if you're gay you don't flirt with the straight person. Why create a toggle to do something the player controls anyway?

It's unnecessary, really, since you can decide exactly who your character is interested in by dialog choices anyway.

It'd be interesting, for sure. Having the pre-determined ideas in Origins, while not exactly a problem, was a lil' annoying. (eg: Female Dwarf noble having to had been in a romance with *insert name of helper guy here* even if you planned on her being lesbian.) However, if it were implemented, I wouldn't want it to change anything. Eg: If I picked the gay option, i'd still like to see a female companion try and flirt if it were in their nature to do so.

I don't care, I juste want interactions with npc and if one is more interesting than other, I will go toward that direction... If he or she is a LI I'll try...

First of all...oh good. I'm glad we can discuss complex issues in a very mature way. I don't care if people hate the idea, but if you're not going to add something to the discussion, why bother posting at all?

Second...

That's fair. I'm not exactly saying it would be a good idea. In fact, it might be a horrible idea, but it was just something that occurred to me while reading another thread and I was curious to see what other people thoughts about it and thought it might be at least worthy of consideration. But it does open up some additional possibilities, like Dracon525 mentions above. Allowing for a previous love interest of yours to show up without destroying what you would like your PCs orientation to be seems like it could be interesting. At least, that's the benefit that immediately springs to mind, I'm sure there are others.

It's something I'm happy to head cannon. Like SardaukarElite said, if we got to select things from a more detailed backstory at the start of the game that mentioned previous relationships then it might be nice to say who they were with but otherwise I don't think we need it.

Thinking of the conversation about licking a lamp post in DA:O, the player can basically choose to say if they are a virgin or not - regardless of whether the Warden has had sex in game yet. If having the PC definitively state their sexuality was something people wanted though i think something like that, where its just part of conversation with a NPC, would work better than actually selecting it during CC.

That makes sense. As to the head cannon thing, I was thinking that doing things this way would be a good way to avoid things like the Female Dwarf Noble Origion, as was mentioned earlier. If you go into that planning on playing a gay female character, you might be surprised to find that you've actually been in a relationship with a male character. If you set your own sexuality, then any previous relationship that the writers want to include would match the character you intend to play.

A pre-release period on BSN really is a game of how many can of worms it is possible to open.

Hmmm it could be interesting depending on how it'd be implemented... I wouldn't like it to be restrictive but the option of having companions of the same orientation flirting with you first could be a nice change, instead of you having to flirt with them... But don't really know...

And I don't understand calling this a stupid thread when there're hundreds of threads like "I hate the hair options!!!" and worse stuff...

As long as NPC's have set sexualities and do not change depending on the PC's sexuality I have no problem selecting what sexuality the PC will be.

Why people are saying this is stupid thread? I have seen this idea used in game before..

I don't think "gay" content should be able to toggle away since just about homophobia and player being a dick. You see lot of content in games and media, some you like and some you don't but you can't toggle it away. I'm not able to toggle away unnecessary sex scenes or ridiculous jokes when I watch movies so there is no reason for gay toggle.

However chosing your sexuality in the start is not bad idea, it's character building. I'm not sure if such feature is needed though since you can decide the sexuality of your character without choosing it in the game and then flirt with everyone you want and fits that characters sexuality. If someone flirts with you who you aren't into, well just turn them down, I don't understand why it's big deal.

I've played the Dwarf Noble origin several times and never had a problem telling Helper Guy that our relationship was strictly platonic.  I think, unless I'm remembering wrong, that your initial dialogue with him determines whether you're lovers, best friends or have a purely professional relationship.

That's how i remember it as well - though been a while since I did it so not 100% sure i'm remembering right either

I wouldn't want other characters to react differently to me based on information they couldn't possibly know about me. All interactions should be about my actions, my obvious race/gender or my class, or an agreed background that was public knowledge - such as being the youngest child of House Trevalyn for instance.

It is, but why at character creation ? it's something that should be a possibility to express via dialogue, yes, what is the point of a CC option ?
