For months and months I've had my first playthrough character pretty much decided. I knew I wanted to romance Cassandra and my first thought was a Han Solo type Rogue, smarming my way through the Princess Seekers frosty exterior.

The more I considered though, I thought I'd prefer to romance Cass as someone she looked up to; an equal rather than an opposite, someone who knew what it meant to put duty first.

I settled on a Human 2-Handed Champion, noble and a devout Andrastian, but a little awkward around the ladies. Sort of a proto-Ned Stark type. I did a detailed bio and I'm really, really happy with the character I built. I'm still convinced that this is the right person for me to romance my Nevarran beauty...yet....

The closer we get to launch and the more I see of Mage gameplay and skill trees, playing Mage is really, really appealing to me. My canon Warden was Rogue, my canon Hawke was Warrior so playing Mage first kind of completes the circle, but because I'm sold on my Champ being my Cass-amancer, I'd have to defer romancing her if I went this route. I don't have a lot of time to play at present, so I'm unlikely to get a second playthrough going until next year, otherwise I wouldn't be fretting so much.

What to do, what to DO!

Anyone else having a last minutes rethink about their first Inquisitor?

Knight enchanter mage or warrior using magickal weaponry...

Sigh.  :( I'm leaning on warrior, since my character uses a sword and shield.

But they're magickally summoned sword and shields.

Oh, boy. Guess I'll have to see how both classes feel for this one.

Actually, I'm pretty much with you, right down to the specs.  I dabbled in all the classes during DAO playthroughs, but I just can't resist the warrior.  Everyone has her/his favorites, and that makes discussion so interesting.

You know what?  My advice is to stick with your instincts.  Maximum enjoyable playthrough is to go with your Ned Stark type.  Noble, pious, a touch unsure around the ladies.  My only caveat is to allow your inquistor Trevelyan to spontaneously be attracted to either Cass or Josie.  I've decided to be open with the two male hetero romance options, to add unpredictability to my playthrough.

I'm just concerned for you that if you're like me, you'll enjoy the mage, but sooner or later start wishing you could just run up to the baddies and smash them.  I think each player has her or his combat instincts and class-based worldview that's instinctive.  Experimenting with other classes and worldviews is always good, but for that first playthrough?  Go with your core favorite--the Ned Stark type warrior.  He sounds great.

Hope that helps.

I have thought out 5 different Inquisitors and I haven't still decided who to play first. However I have started thinking of changing up some of my 5 and even creating more Inquisitors; I have started think of doing elf lady since they look awesome in DAI!

All the time. I have a lot of 'concept' characters but then new ideas always spring up.

I have bad news for you Koorah. No matter what choice you go for, you will be disappointed in not picking something else. It is typical with any RPG like this to be torn asunder by choices :(

Best advice: Stick 100% to your first idea, whatever you land on. Better to have 3 complete playthroughs with no regrets, than 15 half-started-rerolled-characters.

Well, if you don't mind sometimes playing the other characters, you can start your concept warrior, while switching to a party mage when you please. This will also give you an opportunity to see if mages are really awesome (or maybe you will hate them). Go with what will give more fun. But really, how can you resist Cass? :P

I'm having trouble as well, at least for my canon play. I have 3 to 4 play throughs planned but my canon play keeps changing in my mind. Like, I know ill be mage since that is my main class in all DA games. I'll do a self insert of myself that will be a mix of diplomatic, aggressive, and arcane knowledge diagolue options. My LI will be Dorian. I've never done a self insert before but my stance on the M/T war will be in support of mages and I can see myself standing against the Chantry and reject the Herald of Andraste title. The thing I can't decide on are my party members.

For warrior I was gonna go Blackwell but all this Cassandra info has me wanting her in my party. I feel like when it comes to companions I always want someone my PC will butt heads with or kinda have a rival relationship. I'll say that Cass has surprised me, I thought I'd hate her but I really like all the things I'm hearing about her.

Rogue will be Cole for sure. I've read Asunder and love him and Varric and Sera are kinda meh for me atm.

Dorian is my LI, so ill try to get him as earlier as possible and see if there is any consequence to having him in my party the whole time rather than other companions. If I was a dev that's how I'd play it, companions get jealous or don't trust your leadership because of who you are romancing. But all the stuff I hear about Vivienne makes me want her as well.

For now, guess ill go Mage Inquisitor, Cassandra, Dorian, and Cole.

I feel you. At first I planned a human rogue who'll have a heart of gold and romance Josephine while rolling a party of Blackwall-Varric-Dorian, but now i'm starting to gravitate towards a Qunari mage who romances Cassandra and rolls Blackwall-Cass-Varric.

My canon Hawke is a Mage while my canon Warden is a warrior, so it also feels right to have a rogue to make the circle come complete.

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL!

After a lot of dithering I've finally fixed my Dwarf Artificer for my first playthrough, but honestly that's liable to change right up until the game drops. Maybe even after. My head is brimming over with characters, some honestly more evocative than this one. I'm only going with this because it fits my canon Warden and Hawke playthroughs in certain ways.

I'm not going to fix a LI. I did that for DA:O and DA2 and ended up with different people both times. It's just more fun to spontaneously romance someone.

Thanks for all the replies folks. I see so many people confident in their playthrough choices I was starting to wonder if I was the only ditherer on the boards.

I probably will go for my 2handed champ first. As Ashelsu correctly points out, I can always swap out to my party Mages for a to experience the combat. The mechanics won;t vary much between my necromancer and the way I build Dorian for example, but the way I interact with the world and those under my leadership is far more consequential so I should really go with the character concept I've been stewing over for months :)

I don't remember being this torn in previous games, tis very odd.

Why can't you romance her if you are a mage?

I keep telling myself I'll make a Dalish rogue, like my Warden was, but now I'm starting to re-think it.

I mean I don't want two of my characters being too similar to each other.

Honestly, my original plan was going to be a Dalish rogue who romances Sera. I really just wanted to do that because I liked the idea of finally being able to have a female elf be in a same-sex romance with another female elf. (Since usually it's just elf/human in DAO or human/elf in DA2. I should note I only romance the ladies.)

I'll still make an elf though, since they're pretty much my go-to race (like my brother is with dwarves) but I'll just choose mage for my character's class instead.

Would be nice trying something different for once.

I could... but I've been so set on romancing her as this warrior Inquisitor that it would feel a bit like she was cheating on him.

I know that sounds odd, but I can't shift it. If I play someone else I can't do the Cass romance. End of discussion for me.

Sounds reasonable.  I think it's part of the richness of DAO and DAI (not to slight DAII, but we could only play Hawke.  Polite, angry, or wry, it was still pretty much the same Hawke).  Your worldview of Thedas will change as a mage, because others will react to you and treat you differently.  And your mage is a different person, who will likely be attracted to a different person.  Your mindset seems like it will be ultimately rewarding for you, KorrahUK.

P.S.  If UK means the Sceptr'd Isle, I'll be spending the holidays in your fantastic country.  Cannot wait--even though it will interrupt my DAI playthrough :) .

The Keep is the best thing and worst thing to happen to me in regard to Dragon Age. I had things plan out and was ready to go outside of my canon run. Now I am going back and forth on everything. My canon character is set in stone. Trying to pair up A Warden-Hawke-Inquisitor run is fun and head banging at the sametime. To tell you the truth I am enjoying it. :D I seem to be a perfectionist when it come to setting these runs up. If one thing is off then the whole thing is screwed up. B)

Dragon Age makes things easier for me with picking a class.  I am always drawn to play sword and shield warrior first (I certainly see the appeal of the others, but it just fits me :) ).  I almost always play human male.  The tricky part for me will be Cassandra vs. Josephine.  I don't know enough about them to instinctively pick one over the other.  I am leaning towards Cassandra because she's a returning character and she is also a companion.  That should hopefully add some random dialogue in the world if you are romancing her...I hope...

Now, Mass Effect, I am always a wreck with.  Infiltrator vs. Sentinel, grr...

I have my four playthroughs set in stone, and I'm forcing myself to do them in a particular racial order in order to prevent waffling and angsting over the delayed gratification involved in saving Qunari for last.

Where I'm being the most mercurial is in who my companions will be. I'll be playing a Human Mage first, so I need one Mage, one Warrior and one Rogue. Who those will be, though, change constantly based on a number of factors. I'm hoping that once I sink my teeth into the game I'll be able to get a better read on character dynamics quickly, because right now the four-person party cap is killing me logistically.

I had it set in stone that my dual daggers Tempest Rogue was going to be a Dwarf.

Then I see a male qunari daggers rogue in some gameplay.

Between that and the racial bonus I decide I will roll a qunari daggers tempest.

I bet tomorrow I decide on a human archer tempest.

Thankfully, Tempest is the only thing about my rogues characters that will not change.

:D

The Keep!!! I always regret that I didn't make alistair king. I wanted him to stay with my female mage warden without letting her to be his mistress (the warden deserves better...) But then, the comics came out and alistair is king in BW canon. My brain is having a hard time mapping the little adventure alistair, varric and isabela had with my playthrough. Maybe I should make alistair king afterall?

I have my PC half ready...I know race, sex, appearance, background and team, but Im unsure which class I will use. Im torn between mage nercomancer and roque. But fortunetly I can use EAA , so I decided to create two PCs in a trial so I can check which class I will like better.

Hope you have a wonderful stay! Where are you headed for may I ask?
