Okay, hypothetical companion time. I'm going to assume a 3/3/3 split just like now. I'm going to assume we lead or are at least part of an Organization that has yet to be named (or maybe even the Inquisition). For romance stuff, I pretty much went with what felt right to me for the characters.
Warriors
Lysander: A male human warrior (leans towards Weapon & Shield). Many think of elaborate aristocracy when they think of Orlais, but those who venture into the countryside will discover people like Lysander - simple people simply trying to earn a living. Though he received basic training, Lysander never thought he’d live the life of a true warrior - beating down bandits and serving in the militia of a small town is simple work, even if done skillfully. The rising tide of problems the Organization is dealing with inspired him to do more, however. He left behind his home and a chance for a normal life. Lysander is very much the boy next door, fairly naive and ignorant of the wider world, resorting to stereotypes to make sense of the strange and wondrous. As such, he’s continually finds himself having to take part in sometimes painful reassessment of his preconceived notions. He does what he does with good intentions even if he is disappointed that, unlike in his safe hometown, things don’t always end happily. Lysander is a love interest to both sexes.
Hadra: A female human warrior (leans 2 handed). Life is harsh in the Frostbacks, but the Avvar are a stalwart people, and few are as stalwart as Hadra. As fiery as Avvaran liquor and as tough as mountain ice, few could ever best her in combat...but women are not meant to be warriors in the tribes, and the day came when a man kidnapped her to be his wife. After she killed the man, the avvars were hostile and locked her up, intending to kill her. Her brother was the only reason she survived - he turned his magic against his sister’s captors, and they set out together in search of new lives. Hadra is blunt, tough, and extremely masculine: though she still identifies as female, she thinks of herself as living as a man (given her own culture, she’d be considered genderqueer by us). Hadra hopes that the Organization will offer them opportunities to prove her strength. Hadra is a love interest for women only.
Elindra: A female elven warrior (leans weapon & shield). Kirkwall has seen tough times as of late, and Elindra’s seen them too. She grew up in the alienage in Lowtown, fighting for her share with the rest of the city’s elves. In the wake of destruction that the qunari and Anders left, chaos ensued. What started as a small band of elven friends trying to survive turned into a mix of vigilantism and thuggishness, with Elindra as their leader. Fleeing the city guard after they exacted retribution over the callous abuse of several elves, her band of warriors came to The Organization in hopes of doing more good there. Years of living on the streets have made Elindra a surprisingly savvy businesswoman when it comes to her group (now mercenaries) and she keeps people at arm’s length until she trusts them completely. She is a natural leader, accustomed to it by now, so following others can sometimes prove difficult, and her pride gets inher way more often than she’d care to admit. Elindra is a love interest to any elf.
Rogues
Cahiras: A male elven rogue (leans towards archery). Cahiras’s clan was a small one. He thrived as a hunter and warrior, however, defending his clan’s quiet life. That was all shattered when a mysterious sickness swept through, leaving many dead and even more debilitated. The source turned out to be a small enclave of apostates greedy for what they believed was ancient elven magic. Cahiras was among the few survivors to attempt to confront them, but their magic was too great - he hopes his inclusion in the Organization will help him get his revenge one day. Cahiras is serious, especially about the Dalish, but has a lighter side once anybody manages to burrow down through the emotional rock. Cahiras has a strong distrust of magic that he finds difficult to reconcile with the honored position mages hold in his native culture. Cahiras is a love interest for men only.
Harding: A female dwarven rogue (leans towards archery) with the Artificer spec. We haven't met her yet, but I have a feeling she'll be a favorite, and I'd like to see her return as a full companion. She'd be part of team nice guy - but also she's a little package of murder, so yeah. Harding is a love interest for both sexes.
Alain: A male human rogue (leans towards daggers)...bard spec? Alain is a bit of a fop, but unfortunately for his enemies, he's also a deadly one. Alain is a bard accustomed to surviving in Orlesian social circles that make your average war zone look like a relaxing afternoon. He gets mixed up in some ugly business with a supposed ally, however, and is forced to look to the PC for protection. Alain is confident almost to the point of arrogance, very charismatic, very funny, but has a chronic lack of trust underneath that veneer that makes it difficult for him to have meaningful relationships with anyone, romantic or otherwise. He doesn’t take anyone seriously, which is a defense mechanism (I’m thinking his family was killed by a criminal that he never managed to get back at or something). He’s also black, btw. Just sayin’. Alain is a love interest for both sexes.
Mages
Vishanti: A female qunari mage. Vishanti’s past was unknown to her; she was found abandoned in the woods. She thinks her parents were probably Tal’Vashoth outcasts who couldn’t support a child (or wanted to), but she thinks of the couple who took her in as her real parents. She grew up near Redcliffe, ostracized for her race but supported by her guardians. Until, that is, her magic emerged. The explosion that rocked her home killed both her parents and she fled into the wilds, crying and hoping to die. She nearly gave in to the temptation of possession, as well, but an apostate came across her and, over the next several years, taught her how to control her magic - thus, she gained a third parent. Her answer to a question of the Circle would be: “It’s complicated.” She’s tasted the fear of the templars, but she’s also experienced the fear of not knowing how to control her magic. She joins the organization because she wishes to be of service and, despite all her hardships, she holds on to the hope that she can make a difference by charting a middle course for mages. Vishanti is a love interest for both sexes.
Bhelorn: A male human mage. The Avvar shamans are pillars of their tribes, interpreting the will of the gods and performing magic in times of need. Bhelorn was gifted with the ability to commune with spirits and would have done so happily...but he was also gifted with a twin sister who never fit in with the rest of their people. When she was kidnapped, despite the fact that he knew he could not turn back after betraying his people, he helped free her and joined the Organization as a means to an end. For Bhelen, life is a spiritual journey that offers mystery after mystery - he lives in the real world but lives for the next, and hopes to bring the wisdom of the Avvar out of the mountains and into the rest of Thedas. Bhelorn is asexual and, therefore, not a love interest to anyone.
Valya: A female elven mage. Valya joined the Grey Wardens in an effort to find safety in the wake of the mage-templar conflict. She entered young and meek, albeit a skilled mage. Several years of training, however, left her wiser and tougher than when she went in, and the Grey Wardens involvement with the chaos that swept the world with the opening of the Rift made her more familiar with battle than she ever thought she would be. She joins the Inquisition because she feels the Wardens no longer serve their true purpose, or at least, not one relevant to her. Valya has been through a lot in a very short time and is essentially defined by her status as a veteran at quite a young age; she wishes to be of use to Thedas before the Joining claims her. Valya is a love interest to males only.
Like and/or PM me if you want me to write up sample banters. I have no life, apparently, and this is way too much fun!
