I'd find it pretty disturbing if Vivienne buried her long-time lover and then instantly moved on to the Inquisitor. It was creepy enough when Jaheira did it in Baldur's Gate 2.

I mean, they could have structured events differently or gotten rid of the Bastien subplot altogether if they'd wanted her to be a romance, but clearly they didn't, for whatever reason. (I think the reason is far more likely to be 'Mary Kirby doesn't really like writing romances' than racism. Of all her characters across three Dragon Age games, Merrill was the only romance. Compare that to Jennifer Hepler and Patrick Weekes who wrote two each despite working on fewer games than Kirby, Sheryl Chee writing three and David Gaider being responsible for a whopping six Dragon Age romances.)

Especially since Jaheira was supposed to be your foster mother after Gorion's death!

As for Vivienne:  I suspect the Bastien storyline was created first.  And when the time came to decide on romance subplots, they looked at that and went "Nope. Vivienne's already in love.  Would be too creepy to see her move on that fast."

That is how they've said the process worked, I think. Characters first, and then they see which ones work as LIs.

I was disappointed at first too, because Vivienne is hot, yes, but her personality is awful so thanks, but no thanks.

Well creepy can be good.

I mean you get some of the most iconic romances from 'creepy.'

Well if you can call them romances, in some cases...but anyway.

I was hoping for her as she reminded me of one of my DA:O characters I played.

Plus I'd love to be able to finally romance a Black woman. We had a Black man in ME2, but no women yet that I'm aware of sadly. :(

Ain't this some ol bullshit?

Well, I was gonna say something but the Solas fandom is proof that some people do find eggs arousing.

YUP, I agree -- 'tis a shame indeed.

Don't get me wrong, it's great to "just" be her friend, but I now wish I could've romanced her since the actual romance options are underwhelming for my tastes. I chose Cassandra but I regret it, and none of the alternatives appeal to me with the benefit of meta-foreknowledge.

Now I headcanon that Cass and the Inquisitor separate. Then he marries Divine Victoria, forming the ultimate magi/politico power-couple.

Leliana also could have been a wonderful LI if done right.

You know, just because Vivienne is black it doesn't mean that she should have that cartoonishly big mouth that covers half her face.

She looks much better in her concept art and some fanarts because everything is made proportional.

Vivienne beautiful as an ancient nubian sculpture. An ancient art object would be romantic (Indiana Jones) ... But to have sex with that? Frightening.

i think :)

I reckon she would have been gated to human nobles only...and it would seem in character, sinking her claws into the powerful, influential Inquisitor. It's a shame, but theres always the other sassy, stylish mage ;)

I would've totally gone for a Vivienne romance, but with the whole Bastien issue I understand why that wasn't an option.

As for POC characters as love interests... we're seeing more representation, thankfully. Zevran, Fenris, Isabela, Josephine, and Dorian all have darker skin. And I imagine if we go north in the next game, our companions and LIs will be a variety of ethnicities.

Hey I don't mind kissing those big full sexy lips, as well as caressing her body. She's the sexiest sista alive!

My males wouldn't go after her.... Maybe the younger version of Artemis might've though... And he was an unwise, stupid Mongrol then. The only one of my Trevs I could Image going after after Vivienne would be Robert Trevelyan; my Josie romance. He's certainly noble enough for her...

But the whole point of the game is that the PC is looked on as the Herald of Andraste and the "powerful, influential Inquisitor" regardless of what their origin is, or what they believe. So if Vivienne wanted to use the PC in that way -- and it became obvious later on that she did -- I don't actually think it would matter that much.

Also, part of the Trevelyan noble's canon is that they are a younger sibling that was supposed to dedicate their life to the Chantry **, so they might not have that much influence anyway. And a mage Trev certainly wouldn't either as they have been in the Circle all this time.

You know, now that I think about it, it would be quite interesting if they had had Vivienne as a LI whose primary goal was self-advancement, which would come out later on in the game, and end the romance. This would be a stark contrast to Dorian who is actually worried that he will be looked on in that way by outsiders. I think the dichotomy of having those two romances in the same game would have been fun.

** Yes, you can have whatever head-canon you wish for your RP, but that is the established background for the character. It is so very minimal as to allow a great amount of leeway, but it is there.

They don't have explicit love scenes for Josie! BioWare are a bunch of scaredycats. Have some balls for once!!

Sorry about that. Got a little excited. But they should open up romance options and make the love scenes more realistic. Ok hope my explanation is better and I still want to make love to that Nubian Goddess.

Vivienne based on her companion quest seems to really care for Bastien anyway.

I genuinely believe that she wouldn't go elf or qunari, she is far too chantry for that.
