This is not a 'I want to see this in the game' thread it is merely a 'if it is done heres a way I think would be best to handle it' thread

Sorry for the bold and big text just making sure people see it since I suck at coming up with titles.

Reading through some other threads I remembered an old idea that got pitched around in the thread that I thought was pretty interesting. An old flame of the main character showing up in the game briefly. I recall a lot of people who rightfully did not want a sexuality forced on their character like a gay character having a past romance with someone of the opposite gender. A good way to deal with that I think would be to have the gender of the PC's old flame be determined by a conversation you have with a companion or NPC shooting the sh*t so to speak. What I mean is the character talking to you could be talking about a relationship they were in or someone they have waiting for them back home and ask you if you have or had anyone and you would get a list of choices indicating that you had someone before of either gender or saying you haven't or that they should mind their own business if you don't want anyone to show up. So people who don't want an old flame showing up or being mention wouldn't get one and people who do would be allowed to pick the gender of that old flame.

An example

NPC: Do you have anyone waiting for you back home?

PC Choices

I did once she was an amazing person.

I did once he was an amazing person.

I'd rather not talk about it.

No I can't say that I do.

Something along the lines of that. What do the rest of you think? If an old flame were to be implemented in future games would that be an alright way to handle it?

EDIT: Since I didn't clearly address it originally I would like to point out that I'm not suggesting that an old flame should come up in a mentioning or showing up in the game this is just a suggestion for how to handle it IF such a thing were to happen.

I think that people would have an issue with that character then.  Because, unless they were two fully fleshed out characters (male and female) who have different stories and impact the PC in different ways, it's just going to come across as a gender-swapping of a character.  I can already see the accusations of "playersexuality" and "cheapening of characterization" and whatnot.

I think it wouldn't work. I liked how in the DN origin, as a female, I was able to define a previous relationship with Gorim if I chose to, but IMO, that only worked because of the origins aspect and because I was defining it to a set character, not just a random one.

I can see that though I should have put in the OP that I was more or less talking about if such a thing were to happen anyway not if an old flame should be mentioned or show up. This is just a suggestion for if it were to happen since I think it would be better for the player to have a choice in that manner even if the old flame in question is just a brief mention at most.

I think it wouldnt work Well but i would like to see that you could romance some not companions/adcisors i futher games. There you maby could get a old love back but only if the love was only one sided and you never knew about his/her felings.

Posting an OT post in my own thread but does anyone know how I can change the title of the thread? I think it's going to cause some confusion and would really like to change it^^;

I actually think it might work out pretty well. It's kind of like the Human Noble Origin in the fact that you could have a romance one night stand with either the lady in waiting or the young man and as either sex. They both died tragically, but it was a nice touch. Also there seemed to be a bit of history between the PC and the person of their choice as well.

Apologies to the whole thread I find myself having a harder time trying to clearly make my point across than I realized. I need to stop making threads it seems

You could sleep with the same sex one ?

What if you put bisexual then? Would there be two? And what if you're demisexual or asexual? You just get less content? People would be hurt by that, I imagine. Or what if someone doesn't like the straight NPC and wants to chat to the gay one, but doesn't want to declare themselves gay? It just seems too complicated to me, and the way they did in HN preferable.

OP to clarify, I think your suggestion isn't terrible, just tricky to implement well, and probably not worth the work it would require. Interested in hearing more suggestions through, I don't want to shut down a discussion. :)

Again I'm not saying this is something I think should be put in a game but I have seen people suggest it and am just throwing out an idea that might make it work better without rail-roading someone into a relationship you either didn't want or with the wrong gender hence the two options in the OP basically saying that you didn't have an old lover or you want the NPC to stay out of your business.

Fair enough. I'm probably crossing streams in my mind with the other set sexuality thread, lol, so sorry about that.

I still would rather not have an interaction with an NPC lock me out of a relationship just because I was like "heck yeah I dated him!" for RP reasons and then all the sudden the game thinks I'm straight and I can't romance Sera. Is that what you're imagining? Because it seems like you'd have to meta game to know the impact of that choice.

Sorry I wasn't directing that at you just in general to the thread since I'm very bad at trying to clearly explain what I mean. I apologize if I cam off as hostile at all.

I don't mean it in a way that it would lock you out of any relationships either I'm talking solely about if in a future game they ever tried to bring an ex lover in mentioning or something like that nothing more. I don't mean anything along the lines of locking you out of romances I would hate something like that to be honest since most of my characters are into both genders so I understand how irritating that would be. I apologize again if I'm not making much sense.

My timing on this thread was probably very bad and I should have made this thread when the idea was being tossed around before not a long time after

Hum...that was made before . RIght now I can't think where (tired)....but I do recall seeing options like that . And seriously , if it is just a line that say 'Yeah I'm not a virgin or you are not my 1st'...its shallow and pointless in my opinion .

OHHH I remember!!! it was in a mod !! Saerileth Mod to be precise .

She will ask ya if you were ever with someone and depand on your reply she may just leave ya . For exemple you could say it was just a fling and you didn't care for anything else . and that is a 100% you not gonna have a romance with her .

In this mod , at least they tied it to something . But in general , it often used to give you a tiny view of one past . *shrug* either way , if it's added..I like more then one line personally .

I think that's a good idea Huldra.  It's a very good way to flesh out the background of a characters history.  I don't think it's nessecary to have every single sexuality necessary either. For the sake of who you imagine your character being attracted to, 2 genders are usually more then enough.  It's not like bisexual people regularly date 2 people at a time.   :D

You're not hostile! I genuinely was getting confused about the threads, which was my problem, not yours. :)

I think I just assumed that's what you meant (that this would set your sexuality, but you just mean railroaded into that specific character, yes...not all ones) but ok. I see what you mean.

I'd be okay with it. I mean as a dialogue option to give your character more flavor, sure. I think it might mislead some people into thinking said lover would appear later...so would you see them being referenced later, if the player chose that option? Or just for building up backstory?

Haha, this seems just like my thread, only with fewer confusing pictures of Bane. Which probably means it's better.

Yes sorry I just meant being railroaded with the straight by default thing. Um a bit of both I suppose really this is just a 'how I think would be a good way to handle it' thread rather than a 'I want this in here thread' I have seen the idea kicked around a long while ago and wanted to put up what I think might work though I myself would prefer it if it was just to give a little personality or back story to your character since I always like the idea of adding little bits and pieces to them even if nothing shows up in game from it other than a conversation.
