Did BW plan for ME4 when they wrote the ending to ME3?

I could very well be wrong, but I would guess no. I think they decided to do ME4 only after seeing the huge success of multiplayer in late 2012. As a result I'm guessing ME4 is going to incorporate a persistent multiplayer world like Destiny.

But getting back to ME3. I wonder if the ending or main plot would be different if BW knew they were going to make a ME4? I think surely it would have been. Maybe the focus of ME3 would have been defeating TIM only, and then ME4 would be the gathering of forces against the Reapers. It would make more sense this way because of the persistent multiplayer aspect--you could play as members of different races  each with their own backstory, subplots, and missions. In other words, there would be no central character. Then with a group of other players each representing one of the Council, you would have an epic series of battles against the Reapers culminating in a final showdown, etc. Kind of like ME3 MP but with a story.

The same can be said from ME2 to ME3.  Despite all the rage and hate after ME3 was released I have no doubts there were plans for another ME game.  Since EA has already been involved in MP in other games I don't think that would be a deciding factor.  It all comes down to $$$ and the Mass Effect brand name will bring in those.

Yeah I don't think they were intending to just drop the franchise after 3 at all. I'd guess they had ME:Next vaguely in mind, but I think maybe they just wanted to handle the trilogy however they could and then worry about the next instalment afterwards. Obviously no one not employed by Bioware can tell you for sure.

Can't wait to get some real details about the game, so we'll know for sure.

A playable Krogan PC would rock and all but guarantee a pre-order which is something I said I would never do but there it is know my weakness is known.  I assume something will come out once DA:I goes gold.

The Mako is back, that already guarantees my pre-order. I don't care if it is the Mako in name only; it's about what the Mako represents, which is driving around on strange planets to get to mission sites.

But I'd love to have alien protagonist as well.

Mako certainly better than that thing in ME2.  Maybe less mountains and more shifty cow and I am down

I hope they steal our credits.

As for the Mako, I hope that we get to rove around populated areas, like colonies and so forth. I fantasize about having a combat sequence on a planet akin to LV-246, and we fight horrible aliens in low visibility conditions.

I wonder if they will have scenes inside the Mako between the main character and his/her squad? We had a scene inside the troop carrier with Anderson and others while heading to the beam.

I would enjoy this myself. Maybe I'm alone here, but I'd love to have a good POV from inside the tank as we drive it. Subtract the horrible jagged mountain ranges and I think it could work.

Bio was always clear about wanting to wrap up the Reaper plot at the end of the trilogy. There was never going to be an ME4 with Reapers in it. It's somewhat less clear when they decided that they didn't want any more Shepard.

Yes, they planned for it. Specifically, they planned for the galaxy to be a ruined mess incapable of supporting advanced civilization. They'd planned to 'Torch the Franchise and Run.'

What they didn't plan on was the fan backlash that would have guaranteed sales of future games would plummet to the point Bioware would be losing money on them.

So they had to retcon their plans. And come up with a new idea that did not involve "Mad Max in Star Trek/Wars."

In either case, the Mass Effect series has been developed one game at a time, with little to NO thought given to the next game in the series. It shows.

The "Casey Hudson want to hear your ideas on the next mass effect" thread started in 2012, they had no idea back then it would be so successful. So it was probably something they intended to do and with review scores of 10/10 flying around you'd expect they would've at least been thinking about before the game even dropped. Thinking about it lately I've started to wonder though if they have actually set the ending up the way they did for a reason and maybe we might have killed off some of their plans with EC endings. I'm probably just reaching though.

And they didn't plan for ME1 when they wrote ME1.

Next ME game was already planned, but I doubt they already had a final concept set in stone. The same can be said for ME2 and ME3. A lot of lore and ideas present in sequels didn't exist when ME was being released, although this is mostly related to time constraints and changing main writers. Other than ME3 ending, a good blatant example of changing concepts is Cerberus in ME2 - originally Shepard wasn't supposed to work for them, being "on their own" instead, with Cerberus appearing as optional ally/enemy.

Wait --- if they didn't plan to make more games in the series, why did they worry about bad sales for the games they weren't planning to make?

Future games.  Not future games in the series.

I'm not sure I agree with the assesment.  I'm more thinking EA saw a potential shooter franchise and said "milk it"

I think there's always a wait and see approach. Sure they may have already had ideas for ME4 but the go-ahead to make it is probably still contingent on ME3 sales. If ME3 had tanked hard, that would have been the end of the series.

There was a quote from Mac the day before ME3's release where he was asked if they'd want to make a sequel after 3, and he said "no, it would just be a barren wasteland"... Also confirming that in Mac and Casey's insanity they actually intended to crush the galaxy in the original endings.
