I actually don't care what people headcanon for their own playthrough. If you want to hc Leliana as straight, that's baffling, but...okay?

So actually a request for demisexuality is basically exactly what you're asking for, because since the character will never state it in game, you'd never even have to care about it for your own PT but people who want to see it (without disregarding canon in the game) can...as well as having it validated by the writers, which matters to some people. (I care less about this because I'm super Author is Dead but I can respect that for sure)

Essentially, the request is to have a character fit the parameters of the orientation and for the writer of said character to identify them as such so there wouldn't be any doubt for those who want it.

Why would it be pointless? Nobody has been asking for the character to come out and say they are Demisexual. Considering the term likely doesn't even exist, it would be fairly jarring if they did. But just because they don't state it doesn't mean they can't BE Demisexual. I also don't understand why people think this would be difficult to convey, considering they've essentially done it already in Merrill.

Exactly. If they were able to have it seem that way for a character accidentally, I feel it wouldn't be that difficult to do it purposefully.

Demisexual eh.... Huh. Learn something new every day. So it's basically a sexuality that branches off of bisexuality? It seems to me the only real difference is that one doesn't have any sexual feelings until deeply bonding on an emotional level or something. Is that right?

Wow. I learned more about sexuality in the BSN, than I have ever in school. And for that I thank you,BSN

I have learned more about different sexualities here in BSN than in real life.

I am glad that I made this thread for this reason alone. ^_^

That's why in DAI, companions that are bisexual (Iron Bull, Josephine, etc.) are bisexual from the start, and not based off the choices the player makes. Does that make sense? I think it's important everyone understand this in order to realize why BioWare is approaching sexuality and romances the way they are now.

Because I think it's important, I just want to point out that Iron Bull is actually Pansexual, not Bisexual.

Fair enough. Although, BioWare has been marketing Iron Bull as bisexual for the sake of simplicity for those not well-versed in LGBT terminology: https://twitter.com/...379341718298624

Eh, no. That's a strange comparison. The Landsmeet is a series of events, actions, dialogues which happen during our playthrough (in sorta real time) hence we can influence the future outcome. Merrill's sexuality was defined by herself years prior to meeting Hawke. We deal with the canon, remember it. We just make our own world states using canon tools. We have no power over canon things like characters' personalities, sexualities, past choices and experiences etc

Player does not and should not define NPCs traits. Unless your PC is demigod or sth. A player can define only the future and the present

Not to mention that Merrill being bisexual does not invalidate her being demisexual. There are demibisexuals, demiheterosexual etc sexual. Demisexuality is about needing a bond to feel attraction, it's not about the gender, so...

I feel that poor D.Gaider didn't even think about Fenris being or not being a poc. As far as I know he doesn't even really influence his appearance, that's desginers' job. Not to mention that the definition of poc is very vague even among poc. Some say a poc just has to be darkskinned, some say it's not true. Some call dark-skinned caucausian poc, some say it's not true. Plus it's Thedas, not Europe. And Fenris is elf and we know very little about them. Do they even separate ethnicities within the race?.. I think that he made a pretty good decision not to poke the hive with a stick

Hrm, I meant to bring up the Landsmeet to illustrate the difference between ambiguous things that do not merit dev comment (and would suffer from it) and areas where debate over it does not advance or help the dialogue, but I can see where the player agency bit there detracted from that. Maybe a better example is the conversation surrounding the whole "was Loghain right to leave at Ostagar" bit. The less Word of God there is there, the more open the conversation is, which I think is a good thing there.

And I didn't say that Gaider should have commented on Fenris, to be clear! Just that the fact that he did comment on Dorian and not Fenris is indicative of how he's aware that his comments don't exist in a vacuum and confirming Dorian was productive, but Fenris was in his estimate, not.

Companions in Bioware's games will only romance resp. have sex with your PC after a emotional bonding. Leliana for example, could be demisexual, because she will only engage in a romantic encounter after she has developed strong emotions for your character.

That said, why do you think it is important to have NPCs explicitly identify themselves as demisexual? I personally don't think a label is necessary, because you can roleplay however you like in your world. In my Origins playthroughs Leliana was officially heterosexual - my world, my rules.

Is BioWare's world, & it was always obvious that Leliana wasn't straight with her comments about the other chantry sisters, her fun with Isabela as well as her staring at Morrigan's breasts enough that it makes her uncomfortable, that's without including her quest to find her female ex lover who betrayed her, those things would make it hard to ignore her bisexuality even if romancing as a male

I agree with you that this IS important, so I would just like to respectfully point something out.

The very longstanding definition of bisexuality by bisexual people is:

An attraction to more than one gender.*

Iron Bull IS bisexual.

According to descriptions we've had of him so far he also fits the definition of pansexual.

It would of course be up to him/his creator to decide if he applies both, either, or none of these labels to himself.

To remain even tangentially on topic

I would so SO very much like to see a character explicitly demisexual and tastefully acknowledged as such insofar as the setting allows.

You have me down for +1

Now to directly contradict myself- I would actually prefer EVEN MORE that it not be acknowledged.

Not remarked upon because it isn't worthy of notice** within the setting? Sign me up!

*The bisexual index and bisexual.org are great resources and can be used to confirm this.

** Not worthy of notice meaning it isn't unexpected or different enough to note.

I apologize for the off topic post, but I just wanted to take a second and thank all of the thread regulars (and some of the thread irregulars) for being awesome. Whether I agree with you or not, the discussion has been pretty interesting. A special thank you to Kallen for starting what has become one of my two favorite threads (the other being the Lady Inquisitor thread). I want to make sure to do this now, because I'll be disappearing for a while in the next day or so. My 9 month old son has to get craniofacial surgery next Monday, so I'm going to be spending the week in the hospital with him. Then, when we get out, I'm going to be diving into DA:I with most of my free time, so it's unlikely that I'll be posting much, if at all, for those two or three weeks.

Sorry for the dabbling in thread necromancy, but I wanted to let everyone know that the surgery went very well. My son, Owen, was released from the hospital two days early and is healing nicely. Sadly, the hospital trip has completely screwed up his sleeping schedule, so I've only been able to play DA:I for about ten hours (and I've been logged in for roughly 40).

This actually a really interesting read, thank you all for this... I recently created a thread, one of my suggestions was:

  • "All characters should have romance options for any other character, perhaps sometimes more persuading would be necessary in unusual match ups, but anyone can fall in love with anyone, in real life and Thedas should be no exception. Love is a battlefield."

I couldn't phrase using the correct terminology but this is exactly what I meant. It would create unparalled depth to future titles. It's good to know there are like-minded players out there.

You can view my thread here, you are welcome to add to it.

I doubt they'll put this in. Too large of a consumer base to account for what is one of the more of the obscure sexualities. If you want to RP a demisexual individual, or romance one, just headcanon it. Also, I think Vivienne might count as our asexual choice as she seems to have to no interest in such things, they just get in the way of the important stuff.

-D-

Spoiler

Basically, I have reason to believe she's not asexual. Although, I can believe she's more focused on saving the world and fixing the mages problem, so she wouldn't have time for such "daliances." Pretty sure Cole counts as asexual though (In the words of Solas, "spirits are people too").

Also, I asked Sylvia, the writer of Josephine, about whether Josephine could potentially be demisexual and this was the exchange. I combined all the tweets into a paragraph so it would be easier to read.

Me:
I have a question. As Josephine's writer, would you say that seeing Josephine as a demi-bisexual would be correct or incorrect? Just asking because she feels like a demisexual to me, so I'd love to know since if so I finally have a Bioware LI who represents me.

Sylvia:
You could certainly interpret the romance that way if you wanted. I deliberately left exactly how intimate the player and Josephine become ambiguous because I wanted people to be able to decide the level of intimacy, and when it starts, for themselves. (I wrote a one-time post on the forums about it: http://forum.bioware...age/?p=17821638…). Basically, if you would like that to be canon for your Inquisitor, I believe the text supports that. I hope that helps!

Why shouldn't people look for a term that helps describe who they are?

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, as I haven't read through all 15 pages of comments, but the OPs description of what demisexuality is reminds me a bit of the Asari from ME.
