Is there any official information about what she did in her capacity as Alliance soldier in between the time shep blew up the Alpha relay and the day the reapers arrived on Earth? All the ME3 in-game codex says about her is that she was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander after the Battle of the Citadel, and that an Alliance tribunal recently called on her to talk about her experience with the reapers.

In Mass Effect 2 I believe Anderson mentioned something about a special mission... or that might have been about Horizon. I am not certain.

Pretty sure that was Horizon.

I'm not sure other than what Anderson told us about the VSs being on a project on horizon to help improve relationships with other colonies that aren't associated with the Alliance. Besides this, she's pretty much smithereens to my knowledge. I guess their story wasn't as important as James Vega's story about the Collectors abducting Fehl Prime's colonists that led to a bunch of other stuff.

... that's pretty much what I figured. I know she and shep have a conversation in Huerta Memorial about her not coming to see him, but I don't think there's any mention of what she'd specifically been doing during those six months. Guess I'll have to not spacebar through the conversations this time.

Bearing in mind that Alliance ops my be classified Ashley would not be allowed to talk about them with anyone other than those that accompanied her on them. Shepard would understand that but like Excella Gionne I don't think she did much at all. Kaidan did more apparently, but either way everyone jumped at least 2 ranks (Ashley jumped around 4 and got commissioned as an officer), bar Shepard who did the toughest work and got shafted. Why he didn't go rogue and resign his commission is beyond me!
Whatever, Ashley was given a job that was not suited to her talents - liaison in ME2. Ashley was a marine and a Grunt. During ME2 Anderson tells Shepard that Ashley had been promoted to Operations Chief. The lieutenant commander navy rank (not major as Alenko was promoted to) came along out of nowhere as far as I can see, and I do not understand the reason for it unless Anderson had pulled some strings and got her attached to the Normandy, but Anderson is not an idiot and Ashley in 2 years could not have acquired the command experience, and ship knowledge that was necessary.

ME3 in-game codex says she got promoted to LC after the battle of the Citadel, which was the end of ME1. I have no doubt she continued to be a soldier in the Alliance, but I just wondered if there were any official -- meaning 'from Bioware' -- specifics anywhere, of if it's left to headcanon for the players.

Where's massively when you need him.
As much as I liked that guy his Ashley hate was ridiculous. Not even themikefest is as irrational about Liara as Massively was about Ash.

I like the guy. Too bad he's not here anymore. The one thing he and I didn't see eye-to-eye about was Ashley. I like her. I use her as much as possible.

There may be something like a minimal rank requirement to become a Spectre and Udina pulls a few strings.
It's all headcanon though, there is no official info on that. I just save Kaidan to avoid thinking about it

They should have kept her an NCO, in my opinion. Who says NCOs can't be Spectres? According to the lore you don't even have to be military be Spectres. Some have intelligence of police backgrounds, so rank within the military shouldn't be a factor in selection.

I remember her complaining about prejudice against her due to her surname... I don't even understand why VS would be promoted after ME2. After ME1, OK, they helped to stop Saren. But in ME2 all they do is fail to protect the colony. I guess the Alliance can promote them due to the information on the Collectors (as scarce as it is) and surviving (Akuze style) but not 4 ranks.

I was thinking about that. Maybe after the battle of the Citadel, the Alliance decided to stop holding the "Williams Curse" over her head and give her a big promotion after the fact, in light of her spotless service record -- which shep comments on in ME1. I also don't think they could hold the events of Horizon against her too much. Given what happened on every colony before Horizon, she was fortunate not to be stuck on a collector ship along with everyone else.
I bet when the story of ME3 was originally written it was supposed to take place a few years after ME2. A lot of stuff seems to have advances a bit too quickly - Tali's standing among the Quarians, Ashley's rank, Jack, Cerberus' fleet.
As far as Tali goes, I thought she said something after her witch hunt trial in ME2 -- maybe back on the ship? -- about already being considered for the vacancy on the admiralty board... if she doesn't get exiled, that is. She's the admiral's daughter and she already has a good reputation in the fleet for her efforts against Saren and the Geth -- which shep can remind everyone of during the witch hunt trial -- and she played a part in enabling the quarians to attempt to take back Rannoch from the geth: she sent the geth pieces back to her father, and Xen eventually used that tech to create the flashbang-like weapon that greatly hindered the geth, before the reapers got involved.
As for Jack, I got thinking about Kaidan's talk with shep on the Normandy in ME1, about brain camp and how the Alliance turned to the turians for help in developing their biotic potentials. Jack is one of the most powerful human biotics in the galaxy, so certainly her name would at least come up in a conversation about training other human biotics. I know, I know she's a dangerous killer, etc etc... but, really I'm guessing all they did was make her an offer, even if it was just train kids or go back to jail. She took the offer and ran with it, maybe in her mind it was a chance to see the kids trained right.
Just my thoughts. All of it is left to our imaginations anyway.

I'd have liked to see Ashley remain an NCO also because the named human characters in ME3 were a bit top-heavy in rank. Shepard, Alenko, Williams, Chakwas, Vega, Joker, and Adams are all officers. The only named character who is enlisted is Traynor. Having Williams and Vega (he would have made more sense as a Corporal rather than an officer) as enlisted men would balanced things out a bit more. Unlike Chakwas or Adams, they also wouldn't need to be officers for the billets they hold on the ship.

With Traynor she is listed as Specialist, but is the Communications officer, and is referred to as an officer by Shepard
Also Anderson being made councillor can be added though its a choice a player can make. I would never of had that choice in the game. It would automatically go to Udina since he has the background for it whereas Anderson doesn't.
With Ashley, I'm not that surprised. I've seen folks jump 4 ranks in a year. One guy even went from E-1 to E5 in about 19 months

Damn, people have gone soft in the 22nd century. It used to be between execution and joining the army. Or execution and being sent to America. (or Australia after the Americans declared their independence.)

You mean that you suspect she obtained that rank "the lollypop way", right?

Command School? That would probably take at least a year. Likely including a tour of duty on a frigate or cruiser.

Could be she rose in rank faster because of the many positions available due to of all the people killed in Sovereign's assault on the Citadel in ME1 and the Reaper Invasion of Earth in ME3.

It was a big job. So to speak.
