In a game like DA:I, with a total of 9 companions - the choice of who to choose can be tough. With 3 party members in addition to your Inquisitor - there are 6 characters that has to be "sacrificed" in the first play-through.

Spoiler

Please post your reasoning and explain the thought progress behind it :) I thought it could prove interesting to see who is selected away and why it is so for each forumite here. I'm really interested in seeing the entire thought process of choice "on paper" as it happens in your heads.

For a quick overview: http://dragonage.wik...s_(Inquisition)

Looking forward to seeing your train of thought on this!

No cheating you have to explain why! ;) Why Cole and what makes the last slot most important? Class? Personality? Banter / group chemistry?

So you are not planning your party composition to death now, but... taking it at the go while playing? That... is actually not a bad idea :o

I'm playing a male human rogue, assassin type. Cass comes along for romance purposes, and because I need a tank and she seems to be naturally spec'end that way.

So that's my easy choice out of the way. Next, I need a Mage. So we have Solas, Vivienne, and Dorian. I'm saving Solas for my second play through as female elf, so he's out. I'm going to decide between Vivienne and Dorian for role playing reasons-my inquisitor is more of an easy going, honest, try to do what's right guy, and Dorian seems to fit in more with that.

My last slot is going to be slightly flexible, but I think I'm going to go with a two handed damage dealer to off-tank and leave me free to backstabbing and run amuck. So that leaves Blackwall and IB, and since I hate IB's character design, going with Blackwall.

So party is human make rogue inquisitor, Cass, Dorian, and Blackwall.

I'll probably have a look at each quest and try and decide who I will need but to be honest - my first playthrough is more likely to be an all-women team with Varric being thrown in for good measure.

Sera - rogue & LI - need someone who can pick locks

Cassandra - Warrior (Shield & Sword) - probably end up specialising her in templar abilities so she can help with mages/demons.

Vivienne - Mage - haven't decided what she will be specialising in just yet

My Dalish Elf - Warrior (two-handed most likely) - Champion (probably) or Reaver - we'll see how I feel with her.

I will be doing 9 playthrough and I will be rotating the characters, learning from previous playthrough.

However - I have the strangest feeling that I might not be taking Cole on any of my playthroughs. I am unsure why but I get this feeling that I won't like him so I'll probably end up benching him. (we'll see how I feel after I get the chance to know him...not holding my breath)

If I really need plan my party composition I can. ^^" But I don't want to. Sure, everybody has ideas even me, and like characters before we know them. But that's the point I don't know them. :3 I am happy, you daid that is not a bad idea. :3 Off topic: Can you explain me this: taking it at the go while playing? I dont know this term, I have ideas but I ask you for sure. Sorry for that. Dx

I mostly plan based on class, then from the 3 companions per class I pick the most interesting one, with LIs getting priority. I also consider what I think will be a fun combo (Cassandra-Varric, Vivienne-Dorian, Cole-Solas etc.) and make sure people don't get together in the same party twice to get the most unique banter.

For example my first party will be:

Team Personal Canon

Inq. male human (M)

Cassandra (LI) (W)

Varric <R>

Dorian (M)

The last person with the duplicate class, Dorian in this case, will be switched out when it seemes prudent to bring someone else, like Solas to an Elven temple, Blackwall to a Gray Warden fortress, etc.

Other parties I've planned using this method:

Team Little Murder Package

Inq. female dwarf <R>

Blackwall (LI) (W)

Dorian (M)

Vivienne (M)

Team Angry Giant

Inq. male qunari (W)

Josephine (LI) (not in party)

Cole <R>

Vivienne (M)

Solas (M)

Team Mature

Inq. female human <R>
Cullen (LI) (not in party)

Cassandra (W)

Solas (M)

Blackwall (W)

Team Manquisition

Inq. male dwarf (W)

Dorian (LI) (M)

Cole <R>

Iron Bull (W)

Team Xeno

Inq. female elf (M)

Solas (LI) (M)

Iron Bull (W)

Sera <R>

I'm still having a real tough time deciding what class my inquisitor is going to be, so I'm not a 100% on these choices yet. That being said, they probably won't differ much.

I'm thinking that I will want two melee characters and two ranged. Thus, I am contemplating either two warriors up front, or a warrior and rogue. I'm leaning more towards the two warriors right now, as I like some beef on my team. My options are Blackwall, Cassandra, or Iron Bull. IB is probably gonna be my LI, so he's an auto include. Between Blackwall and Cassandra, I find Cassandra to be slightly more interesting, so she's in.

The final choice for me really depends on what class I'm going to be. I'm thinking either an archer rogue or a fire mage, but both are very enticing. If I go rogue, the mage I'd choose to fill out my team is a toss up between Dorian and Solas. I want to save Dorian for a later LI, but I don't know that I'll be able to resist.

If I go mage, I think that it's between Sera and Varric for me. I like their sense of humor, and both would be ranged spec. I think Varric wins out over Sera though, since Cass will be on my team and I'd love to see them banter.

So, final team (leaning toward rogue):

Iron Bull (LI) (2 handed DPS/off-tank)

Cassandra (main tank)

Dorian (support mage)

Inquisitor (archer DPS rogue)

My main party will be my elven archer Inquisitor, Sera, Vivienne and alternating between Cassandra and Bull as needs be because they are the characters I like most and think my Inquisitor will get on best with.

However, if when I start the GW questline, I'll bring Blackwall along for that, Solas if we poking round some ruins, and Varric if we start dealing with the Merchant's Guild or something.

She definitely won't recruit Cole and if the option is there, I doubt she'll recruit Dorian either.

I will know once I actually meet them and decide which ones I like and which ones I don't...

This whole planning ahead every tiny detail before even starting a playthrough based on skewed info is so not for me.

I'll decide when I met them, but judging from the previews and so on I'l probably go with

1. Inquisitor - Human Mage

2. Varric - rogue for lockpicking

3. Iron Bull - tank

4. On rotation depending on what the mission is about (Grey Warden related - Blackwall, Chantry/Seekers - Cass,....etc) and if no Companion has an apparent connection to the mission - Sera

At least that was my plan, before the last few videos featuring Sera. I really like her as a character and the voice actress. I might just switch her place with Varric and have him around on my next playthrough with a Qunari warrior. Their height difference would make a more amusing sigth.

I'm thinking Mage Inquisitor,

Warrior: Cassandra (LI)

Rogue: Swapping between Sera and Varric (Really like both characters)

2nd Mage: Dorian (Find him interesting but to be honest the main reason is i think with the new healing approach i'm going to need him as a 2nd mage for defensive role as i want my inquisitor to have more of an offensive role.)

Oooh, this is fun. I have a few playthroughs planned out as far as this subject goes.

For my first playthrough I'm going to be a Male Qunari Rogue. My party is as follows

Inquisitor (archer DPS)
Cassandra (Tank, and most likely my LI)
Alt between Varric, Sera, Iron Bull (DPS)
Alt between Solas and Dorian (Support/DPS)

Second playthrough will be a female Dwarf Warrior
Inquisitor (Tank/DPS)
Blackwall (Tank/DPS)
Sera (LI)
And my Mage will be Vivenne primarily. (This could change though, I want to use all of them eventually, but if I don't like Vivennes character that she will be replaced by Solas.)

Third playthrough is going to be a Male Human Mage

Inquisitor
Dorian (LI)
Cole
And then I'll alternate between all three warriors each mission.

These are all subject to change of course as these are just my speculated party members based on what I've seen of them thus far.

I've picked my lil squad because they seem like they'd be the less likely to bicker. Some people like their companions to bicker, I do not.

Solas

Cole

Blackwall

I call it team adorable tbh.

I'll probably have a look at each quest and try and decide who I will need but to be honest

This is what I do.  I look at each quest and decide which of my companions would be motivated to come with me for that particular quest.  For example, in DA2, I always bring Aveline for official business with the nobility in Kirkwall since it makes sense for the Guard Captain to be with the Champion for those.  I don't bring her for any underworld or criminal/mercenary quests as I imagine she'd avoid those as to not tarnish her image.

So, for DA: I, I think I would choose:

  • Cassandra for all official Inquisition and major plot lines as I'm viewing her as the "Second in Command" similar to how I brought Alistair everywhere with me in DA: O since it would make sense for him to be there as the other Grey Warden
  • Varric for any criminal/merc plotlines, merchant plotlines, and dwarf plotlines
  • Solas for any Fade related plotlines, elf plot lines, and possibly apostate plotlines
  • Vivienne for any official Orlesian plotlines, nobility/diplomacy plotlines, and Circle plotlines
  • Iron Bull for any mercenary/criminal plotlines and any qunari plotlines
  • Sera for any mercenary/criminal plotlines and any elf plot lines
  • Dorian for any Tevinter plotlines, any slavery plotlines, and possibly Circle or apostate plotlines
  • Blackwall for any Grey Warden plotlines and any darkspawn plotlines
  • Cole for any demon or spirit related plotlines, possibly Fade related plotlines, possibly assassination or criminal plotlines

This way, I'll constantly be mixing up my team composition and seeing different interactions, but I'll also be able to see characters with similar interests (such as Varric, Iron Bull, and Sera) develop more close bonds since I'll see more interactions between them if I bring them for similar types of quests together.  I'll actually prioritize story over gameplay for these.  If it's a quest about Grey Wardens using a Fade Rift for their advantage, I might bring Cassandra, Blackwall, and Solas and not have a rogue with me.  Or, it I'm doing an assassination quest for a criminal syndicate, I might bring Iron Bull, Sera, and Cole with me and not have a mage.

I enjoy having characters who would 'make sense' for each quest.  The benefit is that no one gets 'benched' for the whole game.  There might be some overlap and someone might get more use than others, but no one will get zero use.

I hate doing this stuff, makes me enter in berserker mode because it drives me mad... reasoning is one of the things i hate to do and don't like doing it at all... Empathy and interpretation otherwise:

I will let my inquisitors to hang around with characters they feel comfty too, for example, Anders will get along with the ladies and Blackwall, but will be very uncomfortable with Varric, Cullen and Ironbull (maybe also with Dorian if he starts flirting). Shayle won't get along with any mages and surely will hate Solas with all her life (studious mage... like her former killed master). Blargha will be good with non humans and dalish Solas but won't like humans. Younger Trevelyan likes mages, dislikes andastrians while older Trevelyan is exactly the oposite...

Simple, more feeling and easy, makes me feel good instead of wanting to grab an axe in each hand and want to destroy anything that surrounds me, reasoning is bad.

Varric and Cassandra. I appreciate the DA2 connection. Also, I love Varric, and I think Cass has the potential to be an interesting party member... Might even want to romance her.

For the third party member, I'll probably want to have a mage, so... Maybe Vivienne. She seems cool.

My first play through is likely going to be a human female rogue. I am thinking that Cullen is the first romance, so that takes LI off the table.

I generally pick my party based on the ones I like the most combined with the ones I need to round out the group.

So, I need 1 warrior, 1 mage, 1 rogue with one open slot.

For warrior, I've really only seen a little of Cassandra and Iron Bull, not so much of Blackwall. Between Cass and Iron Bull, so far I like Cass better.

For rogue, I already know I find Serah's voice to be grating to me, so that sort of puts her out of the mix. I know I like Varric, and I know nothing about Cole. When I run with two rogues, Varric will almost certainly be my choice unless he's changed a lot.

For mage, I was originally thinking that I'd like Solas the most, but Freddie Mercury, er, Dorian is really starting to grow on me, too. Vivienne is still something of a cypher, so she's less likely to wind up in the party at least to start out. Right now, I'm leaning Dorian.

Realistically, I am looking at myself, Dorian, Cass with one slot open to be rotated depending on the situation. Of the cadidates for that slot, Varric may wind up filling it the most as the most utilitarian option as another rogue, but there is always the option to drop in an extra mage (Solas) or warrior (Blackwall/Iron Bull) as the occasion demands.

I will probably be swapping around a lot! I won't be using Cole much, because I plan on playing as a dual-wielding rogue. Dorian will be staying in my party once I find him, because he'll be my LI. I'll also be keeping Cassandra and Varric for most of the game, because I'm interested to see where their relationship goes. They will probably agree with most of my choices too, because I plan on playing as an overall good and nice person on my first playthrough.
