I likely be swapping Dorian, Sera, Varric, and Bull around in cycle. My reason is I like to have companions who will make me laugh and since I can't have all of them at the same time, I'll swap them out with each other. I'll occasionally swap in the other characters one at a time so they can get some play time and get picked on by the sardonic crew.

In Dragon Age, like someone else said above, I keep a warrior, rogue and mage in the party, with one free slot - very rare that I stray from that. It usually boils down to, "who seems like they have the most personal interest in the matter at hand" for me - that person (or persons) is going. Then, is there any particular skillset I think I will need? That's usually when favoritism starts coming into the mix... I hate to say it, but I am guilty of leaving some party members behind more frequently than I should. Course, so far in the series, someone always ends up dead before the credits roll too...
Edit: I hesitate to name names at this point, as I'd prefer to get to know them in game. Aside from Varric that is, he's awesome and was with my Hawke nearly every time.

Later on, I'll do a more gameplay focused PT where I take that into consideration, but my first time, I want it to be less of a logical, paper decision and more of what would be most narratively satisfying. (Fancy way of saying THE DRAMAZ, really)

So...
Sera has no chance to be in my main party, because I will probably hate her (I don't have problem with renegade or rebel characters like Morrigan, Isabela and Zevran, but Sera seems to be too extreme in her views). Cole is also out. I think I'll like him (he was my favorite character in Asunder), but I'm going to play dual-wielding rogue, so... Well, there is Bianca. She's deadly and beautiful. And Varric is with her as a bonus!
Iron Bull will be my warrior. Cassandra is loyal, but I don't get well with religious type, especially with those who can use torture in order to get what they want. Blackwall is alright and I think he's something between Bull and Cassandra. But I still prefer Bull.
As for mages... I thing I'll change my mind. I'll probably bring Solas. Freddy Mercury and Sheale de Tancerville, ehm, Dorian and Vivienne seem to have good comments in some quest, but Solas reminds me of Beckett (although he looks like a Nosferatu...). And Beckett is awesome.
So, it'll be:
Rogue Inquisitor
Iron Bull
Varric
Solas

Archer Inquisitor
Vivienne
Blackwall
Cassandra
This team is going to be ruthless and the true face of the Inquisition.

In a game like DA:I, with a total of 9 companions - the choice of who to choose can be tough. With 3 party members in addition to your Inquisitor - there are 6 characters that has to be "sacrificed" in the first play-through.

Please post your reasoning and explain the thought progress behind it
I thought it could prove interesting to see who is selected away and why it is so for each forumite here. I'm really interested in seeing the entire thought process of choice "on paper" as it happens in your heads.

I like to have warrior, roque and mage in my party. So for warrior we have Casandra, Iron Bull and Blackwall. I took Iron Bull to my team becouse Im not Chantry fan, so Cassandra is out, also I liked Sten very much so another Quanari have always place in my group. Now about roques. I choosed Sera. First becouse I will play as Dalish Elf, so I prefer elven companions, second I dislike Cole, and third I had enough of Varric in DA2. It's a new game, so I want someone new. Mages, well that's easy, again I prefer elven companion, so Solas would be in my team. Still Im interesting in a rest companions stories and I hope that I will be able to know them better and form a friendship with some of them, even if they will stay at home...

I have 3-4 sketches for different inquisitors.
2 first are meant to be Travelyan (Mage and not Mage).
I didnt deicided which one will be first.
3rd or 4rth play will be Nightmare limited to use of only 2 characters so i will need to choose wisely.
Teams been deicided according to:
1. My interest to see certain character combination interactions and personal preference - ithe first playout will be for character which personality will fit characters i am most interested in : Blackwall (LI), Solas, Cole, as Female Mage Travelyan. Dorian, Bull, Cassandra, Varric, Vivienne will be taken if the plotline will fit them more than to person of same class in the main group. Sera will be ignored in first playthrough. This will be more dutiful and pro-mage play.
2. Second play will be exploration of other polarity . This could end in more Chantry/Circle oriented play / Neutral selfish play. The cast will be determined according to the plotline, but Vivinne will play major role here for sure.
3 or 4 (there may be another play before it), Kossith , True neutral, who things about gaining ultimate control for Inquisition and such solution as only way to ensure peace and serenity in Thedas. The one with limitation of 2 characters only in addition to Inquisitor. I will be experienced some, and the characters will be picked according to their gameplay and technical powers to fit different task, as well according to plotline, as it will be try to be "good" with anyone, at least ot get most stuff from the things and to maximize output of extremely hard game.

My first playthrough will likely be:
Human Male Sword and Shield Warrior Inquisitor
Cassandra - intended LI unless Josephine wows me; I don't know enough about how either will act in this game to really say either way. She'll be specced to two-handed warrior.
Varric - I really enjoyed his character in DA II and I think his interactions with Cassandra will be interesting.
I'm really not sure on the mage; I am leaning towards Vivienne. I have a feeling this one could be a game time decision based on how they interact with my chosen party and whether I like them.
----------------------------------
Other playthroughs will attempt to take the party members I did not include.
Human Female Mage Inquisitor
Sera - planned LI and she seems interesting and potentially funny.
Iron Bull - He seems awesome. I hope the mayhem line is a running joke for him.
Dorian - he seems pretty funny as well. I might mix it up and have Solas here though given the entertainment value of the other two.
Next playthrough:
Human Male Rogue (completely unsure of bow or daggers) - Josephine is the intended LI.
Blackwall - I love the Grey Wardens, so I'm looking forward to getting to know him better. I haven't really seen much of him so far.
Cole - I don't know much about him, but he's the least interesting to me so far.
Solas/Dorian - this depends on what I do on the earlier playthrough.

In Bioware games I'm not a fan of only using two of three of the same companions for every mission, as that does not make much sense from a story point of view. Also it seems like you're missing out if you're only hearing dialogue from two or three of the same companions. So I was always rotate them out and use them all more or less equally. So in DA:I I might use for example Varric, Vivienne, and Cassandra in one quest, but during the next quest I might use Sera, Dorian, and Blackwall.

1. CASS. She is so awesome and badass and strong!! My quizzy looks up to her. Bffs!!!
2. IRON BULL. A qunari that is casual, humorous and doesn't spout the qun every two seconds? Sign me up!! He's just so different! Also, I'm wondering if i should romance Cullen or IB first. Seeing as i dont know much about bull, i think i will give him a chance to woo my Trev lady ;-) (cause cullen is just XDXDXD to begin with lol)
3. DORIAN. Cause he's the only mage that I have any interest in lol. He seems pretty cool. And sassy. And moustache-y. Also he is overly confident which is just so lovable IMO. Bet he'll have some snarky banter, too!
So, I have a team with one rogue, one mage, and two warriors; whose characters i also love. SO READY!!!!!

I tend to bring whoever is relevant to the current plot with me. If I'm dealing with Orlais, Vivienne is a no-brainer. If I'm dealing with GW, Blackwall comes...etc..
However if the plot looks to be rather "neutral", I will default to either:
1) Dorian Vivienne Cassandra Rogue
2) Dorian Vivienne Varric Warrior
depending on my class choice.
----
Dorian will very likely be my first LI and I tend to bring them along everywhere on the first playthrough so I can see most relevant interactions.
Vivienne is so much like one of my best friends it's scary. Also the potential Ice Queen snark is just mandatory.
This leaves room for a Rogue and a Warrior. (I enjoy balanced party compositions)
Varric and Cassandra are promising but I can't go with both.
After hearing about Cassandra enjoying snarky characters, I may just roll with the Rogue.

Well, to start off, the Inquisitor will be an rogue, so I need at least one warrior and one mage.
First decision: Add Dorian to the party because he's going to be my first character's LI. Blacklist Bull and Sera because I'm saving them for Inquisitors 2 and 3 since I'm 90% sure they'll be their LIs.
So that leaves Cassandra, Blackwall, Cole, Varric, Vivienne, and Solas competing for two spots, and I need at least one warrior.
Second decision: Remove who doesn't interest me. So, only Solas get eliminated here. Originally, Cole would have too, but I read Asunder recently and that changed.
Cassandra, Blackwall, Cole, Varric, and Vivienne for two spots and one needs to be a warrior.
Third decision: Pick the warrior I need. Cassandra beats Blackwall out pretty easily because I feel like I have a better sense of who she is and also because she's so tied to the Inquisition, she'll probably be an insightful companion for a first play.
Blackwall, Cole, Varric, and Vivienne for one spot, class doesn't matter.
Forth decision: I went ahead and eliminated Varric since I've already know him. I'm itching for new things, so he can wait until later games. Finally, I'm picking Vivienne just because she fascinates me and her personality appeals to me the most. Also because she's been stated to have interesting chemistry with both Dorian and Cassandra.
So, in summary, rogue Inquisitor, Dorian, Cassandra, and Vivienne for my first main party.

In DAO and DA2 my party usually had one rogue, one sword and board warrior for tank, and both mages.
I'll probably have Cass as my tank on characters that aren't tanks themselves, depending on how easily I can change Bull and Blackwall from two handers to sword and board.
Varric will be my rogue at least in my first game, may try Cole at least once.
Haven't decided which two mages to use it may change based on how they get along, but on my mage inq. there will at least be one time when I try an all mage party just to see what happens.

I have two main rules:
1. LI goes everywhere with the PC [ = Solas is in]
2. PC's BFFS go everywhere with the PC [ = Cole and Cass are in. ye I know ahead of time who her BFFS will be, shut up]
And that's about it, lol. I don't really care about class balance or anything like that. Tho it is a nice coincidence that Solas/Cole/Cass gives me 1 of each class. I do switch up sometimes if I feel a character would be really plot-relevant for a specific quest or arc etc - ex. it probably makes RP sense to take Blackwall along to meet the Wardens.
After the angsty drama mess that was my favored DA2 party (Fenris, Anders, Merrill.. so many snipes and arguments...) I'm looking forward to a team that (from what we know so far anyway) gets along and is respectful to each other.

I always play an elf or a mage first, depending on available options. I always play male first, then female in my second or third playthrough.
Therefore, my Inquisitor will be a male elven mage.
My love interest must always be in my party (sorry Josie).
Therefore, Cassandra will be in my party.
Of the eight other companions, I tried to choose the two which I found the most interesting (based on information we currently have).
I don't find Blackwall, Dorian, Iron Bull, or Varric particularly interesting. None of them will be in my party.
My Dalish mage won't like Vivienne's pro-Circle views, so she's not in my party.
Solas and Cole are the only ones that seem interesting. An elven mage who is neither Dalish nor Circle who has morally ambiguous views? A spirit with the mind of a child searching for purpose in the world by trying to help people?
Therefore, my party will consist of....
Male Dalish mage Inquisitor (specialization undecided)
Cassandra (love interest)
Solas (my fellow elven comrade/brother)
Cole (lost soul in need of direction)

Male Dwarf Commoner Rogue Warden, not a risk taker (didn't do DR or spare architect) and mostly diplomatic
Female Snarky Mage Hawke, moderate pro-mage
Looking back at these, i have both genders covered, so the inquisitor could be either one i prefer. I also have a human and a dwarf, so while i love the dwarf race they are eliminated from the PC pool for my main playthrough. Similarly, i will be a warrior since i have a rogue and a mage. Leaving me with either the elf or qunari warrior, and while i'm interested in the elven backstory, i can only see myself playing them as either a mage or archer rogue so qunari warrior won out in the end.
As for companions, I eliminated the ones that i knew right off the bat were not going to like my inquisitor (who will be ends justify the means, pro-circle/templar)
Sera
Dorian
Originally i had Cole on the no chance list, but after seeing he gave slight approval to the inquisitor executing someone he's on the provisional list with varric and solas.
Next i had to decide which companions i would be taking with me, since i wanted a balanced party. The first person i decided on was Vivienne since i know for sure our views align on at least something. Next i chose Cassandra as my tank because she is also my planned romance option. Now was the hard part, as neither of the two remaining rogues views seemed to align with mine, so i contemplated taking bull with me, another companion i knew i would get along with, but instead decided to go with Varric for now until i know for sure which one would be better suited for me, and to balance out the ranged and melee ratio of my party. so the end result was
Vivienne- Support/Buff
Varric- DPS
Cassandra- Tank
Adaar- DPS
However i will switch out from time to time for story purposes or if the rogue pans out and i feel like taking Bull along
....looking back i may have went a little overboard

My general conditions:
1. I almost always use the 2 mages, 1 warrior, 1 rogue configuration, unless there's a character I really like that prevents it.
2. My favourite class is mage, both lore-wise and gameplay-wise but I hate having my female PCs be mages because I consider it a stereotype. So all my female PCs will always be either rogues or warriors and my male PCs will always be mages.
3. I always bring my companion LI with me and I never play as a straight male PC.
So given the interest or lack of it that I have in this companions I have the following possible parties:
1. For my first one I always do an all dude party because I'm that original: Male Human mage, Dorian(LI), Iron Bull and Varric.
2. For my second I'll change gender and take another female with me for the sake of change: FE rogue, Blackwall (LI), Dorian, Viviene.
3. For my third one I'll come back to my roots with: Male Qunari mage, Iron bull (LI), Dorian/Solas, Cole.
4. For my last and cannon playthrough to import as a world state, I will choose which gender (most likely male), LI, party, race, class, attitude and choices I will play based on previous experience.

I really enjoy seeing the reasoning behind companion choice for people here and how they can differ. Keep em comming ![]()

Posté 07 novembre 2014 - 05:13
Reasoning is simple.
I shall take Blackwall, because he seems like a reliable, tough anchor for the party, both in combat and out of it.
Vivienne is useful because she is a mage, and I like her attitude.
I'm taking Varric because I shall need a Rogue, another ranged damage-dealing character and frankly, someone who is nice just to talk to.

2 Inquisition teams planned for now 1. Team Force Of the Fabulous A. Male Human Mage B. Vivienne/Dorian (mix & match when the situation demands) C. Bull (fashion intern) D. Varric (chest hair is always in season) 2. Team Clueless A. Female Elf Rogue B. Solas C. Blackwall (Mentor for the clueless) D. Cole (that hat kept him off the A-team)

The nature of the teammates this go round makes the thought process super easy, too easy really. Because there are only 3 female teammates, there is literally no initial decision to make, they're the starting group, first chance I get anyway. Should I find that I don't like one of them, I'll replace them with whoever I like best from the group. Probably Varric, but I'll play it by ear

Likely Cass, Varric, and Blackwall. I like have two people on the field, and I'm not interested in IB, Varric is a rouge and it's nice to have someone back with me (I'm going to play mage) I also don't have an interest in Sera or Cole. I have no need of an additional mage.
I pick based on who I dislike, the process of elimination. Just like politics.
#50
Posté 10 novembre 2014 - 04:36
I always make my choices (obviously) based on the class I plan on playing. Then I eliminate any companions that conflict with that.
My first and canon Inquisitor is a twin blade assassin, which only eliminates Cole. Then I consider what other roles I need. Ranged dps, support, and tank. I look at what characters can fulfill those roles, and make decisions based on two criteria: First, do I personally like the character, and second, would my character like them? So, in this case, all up for grabs, because I like the whole cast and I believe my Inquisitor will, as well.
So now I'm left with choosing based only on what sort of party banter between what characters I would find most interesting. I really enjoy having party members with conflicting personalities, and bonus points for being witty and a good sense of humor, and eliminate doubling up on classes if possible. That leaves out some unfortunate combinations, because I believe that Iron Bull and Cassandra, or Dorian and Vivienne would have some excellent banter. So, when I take all of that into consideration, I'm left with a party of:
Cassandra
Verric
Dorian
And because I like all of the characters, I must have a secondary party. It is made up of:
Blackwall
Sera
Vivienne
