Honestly, who ever asked for Dragon Age to be multiplayer?

Just because you're not interested in an aspect of the game, doesn't mean that it's a "shoe in" and that the resources could have been used elsewhere.

If anything, that ignores the basics of project management. Multiplayer was not added in at the last minute on a whim, using up spare development time that could have been used elsewhere. There was a whole TEAM that did the MP content, and that content was implemented based on an expected return on investment: they're planning to make money from MP through micro-transactions, not through the box sales.

Remember, you're still getting a full 100+ hours single player RPG. The Multiplayer module did not somehow take resources away from single player. Rather, resources were ADDED to the project in order to deliver a module which would generate its own revenue stream.

Exactly. In reality, it goes something like this:

Company asks publisher for 100$ to make DAI as a single player game

Then, company decides it can implement multiplayer into the game, references the larger user base and extra revenue as reasons to approve it. Publisher approves, and gives an extra 50$ for multiplayer development.

Basically, budget is not a restriction. Therefore, a game's scope is not reduced or scaled back just because they add MP. Same can be said for the development time.

Sometimes I feel that "Ask a game dev" and Gaider's blog should be required reading before anybody receives permission to post. :)

It's a pity. ME3 was definitely a worse game for having Multiplayer, and I suspect that DA:I will be the same.

That is the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. ME3's MP greatly increased the game's longevity. I would have stopped playing it a long time ago if there hadn't been any multiplayer.

Well can you blame us for being skeptical that EA would do something like that?

Ok, I'm feeding the troll here, but you do realize that if something is "cash grab", it means it's profitable, which means it's something players actually like and pay for. Which means adding it was a good idea.

You see, this is the gaming industry, if something is profitable and a good way to make money, it means people enjoy playing it.

Not everyone, of course, but lucky for us there's a huge single player game. :)

Actualy i would have used word like "stupid" or "imbecilic" but "funny" is more politicaly correct i guess.

You know you don't need to pay a penny for mp right? I've played me3 mp for years and I've never paid for anything - why would I, when I am very handsomely rewarded with stuff just for having huge amounts of fun.

EA wants (but really requires) MP in every game it signs off on. The real driving force was the success of ME3 and i'm hoping DAIMP can have free MP DLC just like ME3 had as long as the obsessive compulsive gamers keep buying gear packs.

I'm more worried that if this works the next DA game will go the way of the Fable franchise.

No way the next Dragon Age will be DAO as in Dragon Age Online.

Yeah, I was trying to put it in the most polite way I could.

They only really require an online component , which the Keep would satisfy. It's a smart business decision, though. The profits from ME3 MP were probably enormous, and they are planning on supporting DAMP even longer.

Yes, I can. EA is not an evil boogeyman out to ruin our perfect games of perfection. They want DAI to be as awesome and successful as we do (indeed, more than we do, because it's their bacon on the line).

In fact, Ask a Game Dev has some very good articles about the relationship between devs and publishers, and it's generally not an hostile one. Publishers have a vested interest in making sure the devs do what they're best at, and publishers who keep making unreasonable demands don't stay in business.

Remember: there is no evil corporate suits hell bent on ruining their franchises. That's a fiction that only exists in the minds of conspiracy theorists and people looking for someone to blame when their favourite devs makes decisions they don't agree with.

I've never asked for it per se, but I've always discussed the possibility of some sort of co-op mode with a friend of mine who shares my love of Dragon Age (ever since the release of DA:O, actually. Four Wardens dungeon-crawling in the Deep Roads? Yes!)

Who cares?

Multiplayer is optional.

Multiplayer doesn't affect single player in any way.

Multiplayer is a nice edition for people who like playing with teamwork and friends.

Multiplayer DLC is 100% free.

Multiplayer ACTUALLY looks pretty awesome.

Don't like it? Don't play it. Making a thread to whine about something when it doesn't hinder you at all, is honestly kinda petty and foolish.

The EA investors who know nothing about beloved RPG franchises.  They saw the words "multiplayer" and "Skyrim" and their eyes went $ $

And this is also why we have had some truly horrible WoW clones since 2004.

The multiplayer has nothing to do with singleplayer. It's an entirely seperate game mode for people that want to experience the gameplay with other people. They're not "making" you meet other players. Don't want to play the multiplayer? Don't play it. Simple as.

The problem is that everything in this game has been dumbed down just to support multiplayer.  It's not two entirely separate games, though it should have been.

I'm not a huge multiplayer fan, although I did somewhat enjoy the one in ME3. That being said, I'm damn glad that DAI has multiplayer. Dragon Age is my favourite fictional universe, and I want more of it. The franchise won't keep going if it doesn't make profit.

Multiplayer creates another revenue stream, which hopefully means more resources for DA4 development. Microtransactions in multiplayer are a great way to lighten the wallets of wealthy players. I don't mind it all, since multiplayer DLC is free and I'm not forced to pay any extra for playing. (I never bought anything in ME3 multiplayer and still had fun.)

Sometimes people seem to forget that even your most beloved games don't get done for free. Developing games requires money, and inventing new ways to make money through games does not make a company evil.

Besides, I know a lot of people love playing multiplayer.

Some may blame EA for destroys everything for money but tbh you should blame the people who ask so little from them

People are content with some fancy animation and a subpar multiplayer just because it's there ... many hardcore aspects eclipsed through the years cause people don't want to trouble themselves ... demanding genres like strategy and adventure games have almost disappeared ... today most popular games are button mashers which look good ...
