Honestly, who ever asked for Dragon Age to be multiplayer?

Looks like lots of people in this thread asked for it, and many others didn't but don't mind/actually like the addition.

Sounds this is more a case of people being irked at designers catering to other people's tastes sometimes, regardless of how little it actually affects their experience.

Micro-transactions aside, the multiplayer component also serves as an anti-piracy measure.

That's the main reason why EA have decided not to include online passes in their new games.

There are plenty of ways to use multiplayer on a pirated game.  I'd call the Keep their anti-piracy measure, anyone who actually wants a choice or to change things would HAVE to buy the game to use the keep.

After reading an article today which mentions how DA:I was originally planned as a multiplayer only game, and reading more and more about how the first DLC is going to be for multiplayer, I have to wonder.... Who the hell ever asked for multi player Dragon Age?

It's a single player game, which was built on single player fans. I hate multiplayer games. People generally completely ruin the immersion and fun of these games. Why make such epic companions if youre going to make us meet other players?

I played Neverwinter nights and never touched their multiplayer. Who honestly want this kind of thing?

This is a very silly post.

Deserving of a very silly answer: The eerie echidna is enamored with Edith Bunker

I don't mind a separate multiplayer mode, however, it is disappointing that MP has effected the SP development.   Yes... it has.   You will never convince me that 8 ability slot limit and removed auto-attack were not implemented as they are in order to produce some sort of parity between the two modes.    Thus, SP design decisions were clearly affected by the inclusion of a MP mode.

No matter how good DA:I might be (and I do hope it is truly good), it will still never be as good as it could have been if those features had been left in.

Or it was a design choice of SP that was forced upon MP. Or it was simply a design choice in general that had nothing to do with either MP or SP exclusively (to be more compatible with console controllers, for ease of design, etc)... there is literally no way you can state with certainty ANY SP design choices were made solely because of MP unless someones from Bungie/EA comes out and explicitly says so.

And you can't convince me that MP had any influence on the SP design. There is currently no evidence of that.

The MP has not had an effect on achievements/trophies, either. If you are the sort of person that cares about that. Which I am. I do plan on playing the MP. I just don't get into it so hard that I must earn all the trophies that come along with it. I'm glad that there isn't any.

I for one appreciate the inclusion of MP. Being a long time BW fan, I remember BG and NwN MP amd enjoyed both. It kinda sucks for BW though, because it seems that every change they attempt in an effort to evolve their games gets blamed on EA.

Or maybe that's actually a good thing?

EDIT: And the problem really stemmed from nobody sitting down and actually counted how much EMS could actually be gathered by a completionist playthru. This actually rvrn got sideways admitted.

Where'd that come out? I always figured it had to be something along those lines, since denying that the numbers were what they actually were didn't make any sense

ME3's MP had fewer abilities that its SP.  By your logic doesn't that mean that its MP resulted in its SP having fewer abilities than it would have otherwise?

This isn't a direct clone of DA:O's combat, nor a direct clone of DA2's combat, so the ability bar limit, is nothing other than what the devs have basically said: a different design for a different system.  They want the abilities you put on your action bar to be a tatical choice this time around.  You change the abilities that are on the bar between combat too, its not like your choice is set in stone.

Besides that, I can't say that I used more than 8 abilities in DA2 on a regular basis.  Sure I may have had more than 8 on the bar sometimes, but there were some that I literally never used.  Other games have limits of 8 or less, and are fine, DA:I will be too

EDIT:  I very much liked ME3's MP and am looking forward to playing DA:I's version of it

I liked ME3's version a lot, so if this is similar then it will prolly be pretty fun. Why not give it a chance before you knock it.

Don't look at me! I can take or leave multiplayer, but I certainly hope that focus on the multiplayer aspects of the game doesn't detract from the quality of the single-player campaign in any way. Dragon Age should first and foremost be a single-player game, with any multiplayer being a secondary focus.

Origins had a slot limit, it just had a wheel you could pick from, which I always found kind of annoying. Even on the PC, you only had like 12 slots. I really don't think the removal of 4 (which were primarily my crafting/pickpocketing slots) is going to damage the game. It's just one of those complaints that's basically "It's not like how it was in Origins!" that seem to permeate the forums. Just going to throw this out there: Origins combat was terrible. Agree. Disagree. Whatever. It's true.

Also, as far as multiplayer affecting single player, the concept of diminishing returns is one that exists within game development. At some point, writers/artists have reached a creative peak within one focus and then it starts to ebb. You can only get so many dishes clean with a sponge before having to run it under the tap again. Sure, they could have added more stuff to the game, but that stuff might not have been as good, or might not have had an impact, or might not have been written well. Instead, you wrap the project up and have people working on full additional content, or even the pre-production stages of DA4 or, god forbid, taking a vacation. So yes, multiplayer does take funding and resources, but it doesn't necessarily take them away from the single player experience in any meaningful way. People can tell me that it is so until they're blue in the face, but until they show me that multiplayer forced Casey Hudson and Mac Walters into a room to hammer together one of the (at the very VERY least) head scratching endings to a video game, I'm going to go ahead and reply by saying it's just your opinion, you have no basic in fact, and it's happening so get over it. Better yet, get some friends together and run some of the multiplayer. If it's anything like Mass Effect 3's, it'll be fun as hell.

Multiplayer is a big thing to the general public. For every single game that I get, my dad asks me. "Multiplayer?" and if I say no, he just says, "Well then it's ****." I've seen this opinion widely too lately. If a game lacks multiplayer, it does not warrant the 60$ price, and overall most "casual" gamers favor multiplayer experiences.

That doesn't sound any different to the opposite side. "So the game gonna have multiplayer?"
"Yes"
"Looks like the game is going to be sh** then"

In Origins (and in DA2) you can change the shortcuts on your bar even during combat. So it wasn't limited in anyway.

In DA:I once the battle starts, you're stuck with the choosen set of 8 until the end.

Btw 12 slots ? ok :

Yea, the higher res you manage to get Origins working on, the more you can stretch it. I replaced the screenshot in /spoiler/. That one has 26 slots :)

I think it's time to stop the multiplayer hate.

Not everyone wants to play multiplayer - about a third of folk don't want to touch it at all, which is why it is separate and why it is has no single player impact (lesson learned from ME3). There is more than ample information to support that it is a separately budged mode and pays for itself (and more).

So to complain that others have and enjoy a feature you choose not to participate in, that doesn't impact your game, is just selfishness.

A poll of >2,000 a couple of months back found that

  • most people will try DAMP (63%).
  • a significant proportion are not interested (37%).
  • a large number will play it a little (45%)
  • a smaller dedicated bunch will play it as much or more than single player (18%).

So multiplayer is not a minority interest - if you don't like it, then don't play it - you are not impacted by its existence.

I'm looking forward to the multiplayer, though I will start with the single player game.
