Cass dwarfnapped Varric to tell the Divine what went down in Kirkwall.
Wait... So if Dawrfnapping is a thing... *Runs off shouting for Oghren*

So she doesn't just kill him or imprison him after the breach encounter? He's the only rogue in the entire country that can help or she just can't get enough of him? It just doesn't seem like a logical arrangement.
He's free to go, and he decides to go to Haven to tell the Divine about Hawke with her.... then the Breach happens.
Is there a specific reason why Varric would like a world filled with demons?

The fact that the writers have explained why they bring back certain characters, and that it's been confirmed in this very thread by one of the dev's will always lead to "fan service" *shakes head*. It doesn't matter what the writers say, because there are people here on the forums who will always know better of course. Clearly Mary Kirby loves writing Varric and has much more to tell us, let her.

Okay Yesterday's Vivienne trailer made my decision clear of each companions. At the end of that trailer you see...
Cole - Blackwall - Cassandra - Varric - Vivienne then The Inquisitor <- These are the ones that will always be in a party no matter what... The rest...Bah For other playthroughs maybe and out of curiosity.

Dwarf characters always come back, Oghren in Awakening and now Varric in Inquisition.
In reality Varric is obvious fan favorite and with Cassandra helps to link DA2 to DA Inquisition and since they went to all the trouble of capturing him to question there is no 'duh' moment as to why he's in Fereldan for the breach event. He's there to be questioned further since he's sort of prone to embellishing his story of what happened in Kirkwall.

Varric is probably one of the few characters of previous games that has the most vested interest in everything going on from several fronts without needing a contrived reason.
First of all his ties to the Carta and such organizations that can be affected in many ways both for and against a war between two massive groups like the mages and the Templars puts him in good vicinity for the start of all this. As well as his ties to Cassandra who ends up obviously playing a decent part in this whole thing.
Secondly. He is one character without being potentially dead that actually has some real ties to the Mage/Templar conflict itself and even ties to Cullen who as we know has some reason for breaking free of the Templars and going with the inquisition.
Third you have his merchant and diplomatic ties not only in Kirkwall but in other places that gives him direct need to know what is going on and how that is going to affect him and his business of various kinds.
Fourth is simply that Varric is a storyteller. They make that clear again and again in various little party dialogues he has with different characters all throughout DAII and he likes to be where the story is. He prefers to craft the remembered history to events over most anything else. This gives him reason above anything else to be where the action is and see the inquisition through to its end as first hand as possible.
