This is some speculative thinking on my part, but I was contemplating whether it would be possible to import various Morrowind placeable mods into NWN2 (assuming the license permits it)?

It looks like the model file format used by Morrowind is NIF. There exist a number of open source tools for this format, including plugins for importing NIF to Blender and other 3D editors. (For example, see this page.) Hence that part seems do-able.

Morrowind also appears to use .dds format files for texture. I'm not sure if it is the same DDS format as used in NWN2, but there is a DDS Convert tool just in case it doesn't.

Thus, in theory at least, it seems do-able. There also exists a fairly large quantity of Morrowind mods, so developing an importation procedure for Morrowind models seems like it could be useful. I suspect the mesh sizes are roughly comparable to what we use, since the game came out before NWN2.

I already have.  That's where the jack o' lanterns came from (and the license for the mod I converted allows it.  See http://mw.modhistory.com/permissions for a list).  Gmax has plugins for NIF import/export as well as MDB import/export.

Is there something specific you want to know?   I have a long history of working with NIF files.

Thanks. I'll have to give it a try once one of these never-ending projects gets wrapped up... :)

Anything you want to know about the process?  It's very straightforward, especially since you've converted things from other formats before.

It's mostly just curiosity at this point. For example, did you find that the textures are of pretty decent quality/size and that they have good normal maps? Did they match up well with the existing NWN2 content? I was also wondering if there are some decent rigged creature models that somebody with the right tools might be able to port? :)

Ah, well, Morrowind models don't have normal maps.  The engine doesn't support normal mapping, though fan-made extensions have added support for some kind of bump mapping.  I don't believe it's the same format as normal maps, though.  I'm used to making those myself anyway.

The license for the original game assets doesn't support porting the models or textures to other games, nor even to games within the same series, such as Morrowind to Oblivion or Skyrim.  Bethesda has generally allowed using the assets from one game to retexture or otherwise repurpose for mods of the same game.  So, what you'd be looking at as far as legality goes is using only fan-made mods that allow porting.  The permissions page I linked is a large, but not comprehensive list.  Many mods on the Nexus allow porting but don't have an entry in that list, because it's up to the original authors to add their names to the list.

The texture sizes of the original content were very small, but for mods you can see anything from 128x128 to 2048x2048.  The jack o' lanterns were the former.

I'm not sure about rigged creatures in Morrowind mods that could be used, but Oblivion had some custom creatures added by mods (such as Mart's Monster Mod) that might be permissible.
