I wonder what it would matter to lose him anyway.
- He hates his fellow dwarves, so that connection is bust.
- He doesn't have a group affiliated with him like Sera, Cassandra, Iron Bull and Blackwall.
- He doesn't have prestige from powerful civs like Dorian and Vivienne
- He's not something unique like Solas or Cole.
He just tells wildly embellished stories to try to make his friends look better than they really are.
I liked him - but I don't know why I'd miss him if he left (maybe that'll change in during the story)
He's quick with both word and cash. During DA2's party banter, it becomes clear that the only reason most of the party doesn't fall prey to the criminal elements of Kirkwal is because Varric is bribing the local criminals and law enforcement to leave them alone.
In Inquisition, it'd be awesome if he could spearhead your propaganda efforts. Can't wage a political war without propaganda.

If he can control the lyrium supply in this game I want him on my team. I'll starve the rogue templars and apostates until they come begging to me.

Mages don't need lyrium. It just makes them more powerful. The Templars will go mad long before the mages do. I also doubt anyone one person will control all the lyrium trade.

That was Orsino saying "Thank the Maker."
Varric's line is "You sure about this? Even you might not win this fight."
Oh, it sounded like Varric ![]()

I know his breaking point.
When a Rogue Inquisitor takes Bianca and lets her feel another man's (or woman's) fingers on her trigger...

Isabela was definitely trying hard to push him to his breaking point, then ![]()

She had the right idea. Good thing she never went through with it, or he'd probably have killed her.
Or made it so that she was completely numb below the waist, which probably would have been worse for Isabela.

Yeah, he was always neutral every time I played The Last Straw.
Nope he prefered to side with templars over mages but he was rather on hawke side rather than mages or templars so he always stays with him.Pretty much he is much less optimistic if you side with mages first because he thinks that they may not win second as he points he isn't sure if they should help dangerous peoples spread chaos.

He doesn't actively take sides like most of the other companions, though. He really doesn't care that much about the conflict.

Just one page back...
In the mage ending he tells you "I'm not sure we should be doing this ,helping dangerous people run amok."
In the templar ending he says "Defending innocent people , preserving our way of life ...this is worth doing."

Mages don't need lyrium. It just makes them more powerful. The Templars will go mad long before the mages do. I also doubt anyone one person will control all the lyrium trade.
Lyrium is a fuel source for both the magi and templars. They also need it to boost more powerful spells like journeying into the Fade. So controlling the lyrium trade would be advantageous in this game. If we could somehow influence the Merchants Guild to restrict the lyrium trade more, it could help us focus on the smugglers and their clients.

Mages don't need lyrium. They just want it. Controversially, Templars will go mad and die without lyrium.

Not taking a side is taking a side, especially in DA2 where the mage rebellion is trying to change the status quo. If you don't stand with them, you're reinforcing it, even if you don't see it that way. And Varric does get that, I think, because of the way his dialogue favors templars. He does care about the conflict in that he very much wishes it would go away, but it's also obvious that he sides with the status quo. Possibly this sounds nitpicky, but I think it's important. He's not apolitical, he's just a moderate in a world where moderation has gone out of fashion.

Well, Gaider said that there's no one thing you can do to make people leave. I imagine if you **** over too many people for personal gain, Varric will be none to pleased. And if you let innocent people die for "the greater good."

I just imagine it like a drug addict searching for his next fix. At first they can deal with it but as time goes on they start going to greater lengths to finding it.

Your body begins destroying tissue searching for any residual lyrium left in them. It kills.

Honestly the lyrium issue is a mess. Word of God, DA:O, and DA2 all seem to have different opinions, and while some people are pretty convinced they know exactly what templars or mages lyrium situations are..... I'm going to wait until this game to see if they definitively clear it up.

Mages can be addicted to lyrium just like templars. Besides the dementia and madness, mages can also under physical changes. It's said the ancient Magister Lords of Tevinter barely resembled humans, so thoroughly were they mutated by lyrium exposure.
