They were also executing citizens for merely harbouring apostates. While that is a crime in Kirkwall, it isn't punishable by death.

The templars in Kirkwall represent a total breakdown of the Order's ideals.

I think the reason Varric sticks with Hawke is because Hawke wasn't an authority figure or particularly powerful like the Inquisitor. The Inquisitor will probably be able to make many more cruel decisions to the point where Varric might just get fed up with seeing it. It doesn't look like his exit is particularly hostile or anything so I assume he'll just leave quietly, if that video clip wasn't misleading that is.

Varric likes to talk and likes Hawkes who do too. Solving problems and gaining advantage through diplomacy, outright lies, and even blackmail will impress him, while straightforward violence and thuggery leaves him cold. He also responds well to joking, flirting and sarcasm and to mild greed. Beneath his silver tongue, however, he's a goodhearted person and will appreciate Hawkes who look out for their families and are kind to dwarves.

idk i did a nuetral playthrough this week and now that im not roleplaying.. aside from alrik, karras, thrask and merdeth they seemed reasonable. If over cautious and made decent points.

You just named almost every Templar with a name. All higher ups.

It definitely was. Honestly, I'd say Meredith isn't that bad of a Templar until the very end of Act III. However, she can't lead the Order and the city at the same time. Cullen has no leadership qualities to speak of that will keep the others in line, and finally corruption just spills down. Even if almost every Templar in Kirkwall disagreed with the policies, they still follow the orders of the higher ups that they speak to, which most certainly isn't Meredith in a city that large and with that many Templars.

Dragon Age 2 went out of it's way to make the Kirkwall circle look comically inept and awful. The only "decent" ones that you could talk to were newbies & Cullen and they were all pretty wishywashy. Thrask & Meredith were both characters that seemed good at first, but then they both get railroaded into awfulness. It really does the same with mages too, though, since basically every mage you meet is all bwahahahah blood magics~~~!!!

love DA2, but it's you're watching a high school debate and it's going fine, a bit heated, and then all the sudden someone shoots that fear gas from Batman into the gym and the debaters rip off their shirts and start punching each other, and the moderator, and themselves.

im curious as to why DA2 was so polarizing i think the pooch gotbscrewed. The templars were harsh but better than magi, while magi were the cast of south park. Hope their more fair rep in dai instead of magi bad templars good

Bianca(Varric) were my favorites from DA2.  that being said, other than as a story line/plot mover I do not see how Varric leaving would impact my team. I need a tank, that's either the Bull or the Warden.  I need a politician and a mage..thats Dorian, I need a rogue....that will prolly be me.  And then whoever I need to talk to for whichever quest I am working.  I  role play in character when I game..so  wont be planning exactly what I am doing until I am in game either, but reading what Varic will be role wise in game...I just dont think IC I would worry to much about whether he stays or goes.

I know too much info but....
I think Varic is Sexy

I was so shocked when I saw him leave the Inquisition in that one trailer

I think he'll have enough when you start "abusing" your power as Inquisitor and committing more violent and renegade actions.

His breaking point would be a romance with a Qunari inquisitor. Only possible if you pre order from the fade.

I saw this thread right above a thread titled "Varric why?" and thought "Oh damn, Varric's betrayal was just confirmed!" But apparently not.

And we can side with the Red Templars?
