My escalating ladder of force is as follows: Diplomacy.
Should that fail, next comes: Secrecy.
If all else fails: Force.
Of course, I may need to skip some or just use each one as needed to achieve certain goals.

Not every advisor can do everything, and I think each advisor can only do one job at once. Our favorite's weakness is apparently supposed to be that she takes the longest. So it looks like we're going to be using Leiliana and Cullen with some degree of frequency.
I'll do my best to balance the three, and choose whatever is best for the situation. If I were to favor one more than the other, it would be secrecy. ![]()
There are so many different groups to deal with in this game. Their attitude towards you also will be determined by your Inquisitor's background.
Since I'm trying to put an end to the Breach I'll have to use different approaches to get as many people on my side as possible. But I'll need to avoid making contradictory stances. Being called the "Herald of Andraste" is already inviting trouble. I need to be firm in battle, but diplomatic in peaceful situations. Secrecy is only useful when I can't trust somebody or don't know exactly what's going on. In the beginning I won't have a large army so I'll need more secret agents to handle things.
Force, of course. What kind of Jedi do you think I am?
As I love rogues and will likely play one first, I lean towards Secrecy in theory. But if my ladyquisitioner leans towards Cullen....Force may begin to look more attractive. Honestly, I really can't decide.
I'm sure I'll use all three, at various points. Later playthroughs may lean more one way or another than the first one, where I'm more likely to decide situationally.
Which ever I feel is the better choice.
Force first, diplomacy second. As Sir DeLoria said, secrecy is dishonourable.
I can respect that, nice to see something different rather than "all three" or just diplomacy.

Which do you guys prefer.... espionage, diplomacy, or......
FORCE

Or "all three with a bias towards diplomacy."
Or "all three with a bias towards diplomacy."
I can respect that too. I like to see people choose in variety rather than see diplomacy become the popular choice.
I would be interested to see the following set up:
For a Pro Templar:::::
The first couple choices that are part of the "Main" quest line you use 'diplomacy' and 'espionage' to meet your means. and the World around you starts to think you are pretty peaceful in how you will approach the mage templar situation in order to stop the chaos. at some point purely mage/templar relation war map options are available and there is an important flag for a chance to broker peace. Seeing the chance to prove that your are not such a pacifist you choose the option of force, and force all Mage Leaders into submission by making them tranquil. with the leaders of the mages now nulled and imprisoned you start taking out mages left and right.... AND THUS! you just ended the Templar mage war with very little casualties to your Inquisition and can now focus everything on stopping the Elder One
Pro Mage:
Similar situation, however you totally destroy the Templars Hierarchy and make examples of any other templar that chooses to raise their sword in rebellion. With the chance you could loose Cullen as a companion/advisor. Because we all know MAges are Superior to you normal people ![]()

I'll deploy the Secret Diplomacy Force (SDF)! ![]()
It'll really depend on the individual situation, I'll try to do what fits best. But, in saying that, I can see myself gravitating more towards the diplomatic choices in my first playthrough. Poor ol' Cullen might be getting left on the sidelines a lot, but I guess we'll see what happens.
Secrecy mostly with a hint of Diplomacy and Force where necessary. I'm not planning on playing a pacifist, just a Rogue who doesn't care for a fair fight.
Fighting is horrible. And fair fights are the worst kind possible.
I'll use all three depending on which one I think is most fitting for the situation at hand. I must admit I may be a bit biased towards subterfuge though, I can see myself picking Leliana over the others by default for moments I can't really decide on.
Depends on the character. Human female warrior: Force mainly with diplomacy and secrets equal secondaries.
Qunari mage: Diplomacy with a minor amount of force
Elf mage: Diplomacy with secrets
Elf Rogue: Secrets with some diplomacy.
My Krista Trevelyan will use diplomacy, to show the world not all mages are bad ![]()
