I might get this, if I do I want to get the hard cover one, it looks nice. Plus my brother is visiting for Xmas and he has never played a bioware game. This might entice him, since he won't feel overwhelmed, I think lol.

People seriously buy game guides? With all the walkthroughs and help (wikia, ign, etc...) around these days?

The cap in DA2 was 50, and if you played legit (xbox had an exploit where you could max out before they patched it), you only got to lvl 20-something, even with DLC. It seems more games are going for the soft cap model than the older style where you could eventually reach the max through gameplay. *shrug*

Personally, I prefer where you can hit the max during 1 playthrough and then import and play the maxed character with new game plus, but Dragon Age has never offered that like Mass Effect. Ah well.

Two reasons for me. 1) I collect them 2) IF I need help I can go to exactly what I need with less a chance of spoilers and I usually play starting day 1 and the wiki, ign ect isn't up to snuff yet.

The reason there isn't one is so they don't have to raise it for later DLC or expansions. And there is no cap to reach. It will slow down on higher levels for weaker enemies (and stop for some) and then the new content will give higher XP that will let you level up faster again. But you shouldn't be able to notice it to much before you have finished the game unless you are leveling, I think.

Still lame, in DA2 it was 50 but you could barely get to 28-9

I actually glitched 2 characters to lvl 50 in DA2 before they patched it, and it was awesome! I played nearly the entire game as a demi-god with many spell trees maxed. Glorious. I loved being overpowered, and it was like my 4th/5th playthroughs, so it added a lot of fun to it. :D

That's because they were planing huge expansions for the game before they decided to pull the plug on it.

I was so sad when they announced they were done supporting DA2, but lots of the content apparently is getting used for DAI, so I guess it's all good.

What's wrong with raising the cap in the DLCs ? Is it crazy harder  to do or do they just arbitrarily decide it was somehow better that way ?

20 bucks for some weird horse thing and a ring is pretty expensive if you just want them

The items are just an extra bonus for me. Dragon Age games have puzzles (which I hate), so I always buy the guide so I can have the solutions to all puzzles immediately. I mean, I really hate puzzles, but I want the shiny you get for solving them as well as the XP.

yeah, but there will be spoilers! anyway, i suck at solving puzzles as well. ain't got the time for it. so i guess the guide will be good. i am just scared i couldn't resist and spoil myself silly.

The guides I have are all really good about clearly marking the spoilers, so it's actually not hard to avoid them. I don't mind spoilers in the least, so it never bothers me to look, but I primarily use the guides for puzzles, item locations, and occasionally for navigating the companion/romance quests. I also enjoy looking at the information on different types of builds and combat. Guides are great! ^_^

For me it's not about the items. I have this burning desire to complete everything f I can possibly do. Why that's problematic is for some reason compared to the BSN I am apparently a really slow gamer. And I want to spend as little time as possible backtracking and searching and spelunking so I can get to all my playthroughs.

Pre-ordered the Inquisitor Edition myself. Mostly because I collect that kind of stuff, and the bonus items coming with it made it a must buy for me. I don't plan on reading the guide until my second playthrough, but will check out the pages detailing the classes and such. :)
