I can't seem to change the name of the default hero.

There is currently no ability to alter any aspect of the heroes once they're in the keep, though I believe such features (ie. deleting unwanted ones) will be coming in the future.

 

The default heroes are those placed in the Keep automatically so that people who did not play (or played offline and thus did not upload data) the previous games have some choice over origin and class.

 

The only way to change names would be to play the games through character creation, obviously with the name you wanted, whilst online (or use the Origins downloadable character creator and upload that Warden).

True, though not impossible; letters and codex entries used the chosen character names in previous games so we might see the same here, although the devs may just have relied on the surnames for simplicity.

I personally think it would be neat, especially for those of us who are having trouble uploading our data to the keep, if we could simply rename the default characters. I'd be okay with my character's avatar not quite looking the way they did before because I really don't see them directly importing my character into any further games. There were problems importing Shepard from ME1 all the way to ME3 for some folks because of the engine differences after all.

 

But if I could pick my race, gender, class and then name I'd be very pleased. It's not perfect but it would make me happy.
