I started my playthrough before the fix was discovered (huge thanks by the way). Any way to modify the save files in order to change my character's cyrillic name? Not that it matters much since it's barely used in the game outside of the inventory screen, but little inconsistencies like that bug me. I've tried editing the first line of the .das file which seems to be the only non-gibberish one containing the name, but it always results in "save is corrupted" messages.

Two things you can try:
1. Make sure you use a good editor like Notepad++ that doesn't mangle binary files
2. Have your new name the same length as the old one.

It appears that the first method can be refined further. Credit goes to Konoko from a certain Russian forum for figuring this out Follow these steps:

 

1) Download the English language pack from here: http://rghost.net/59199883.

2) Extract DragonAgeInquisition.par into the "Dragon Age Inquisition" directory, overwriting the existing file (you may want to back it up first). Extract en.sb and en.toc into "Dragon Age Inquisition\Data\Win32\loctext". The default path for 64-bit systems is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Dragon Age Inquisition".

3) Make sure automatic log-in is enabled in Origin.

4) Close Origin. This is important! If Origin is already running when the game is launched, it will always force the game to start in the "Russian/Polish only" mode.

5) Launch the game directly by double-clicking DragonAgeInquisition.exe in the Dragon Age Inquisition directory, or use the desktop shortcut if you created one. The game will switch back and forth between the fullscreen and windowed mode a few times. This is normal. Origin will start AFTER the game is launched, and will have no effect on the locale. However, all online features will still be available.

6) Don't forget to close Origin after you exit the game. The "Automatically exit Origin after closing a game" option seems to be not working with the patched DragonAgeInquisition.par.

7) If you check for an update or do a game repair in Origin, you'll need to re-apply the patched DragonAgeInquisition.par file. The other two files (en.sb and en.toc) seem to be unaffected.

 

Please test this and see if it works for you. This might be a better option for those who feel uncomfortable using a third-party client.

 

P.S. DragonAgeInquisition.par from this pack is the original file patched by Outcome. So those who are already using Outcome may simply omit launching the Outcome client and start the game directly. Just make sure you don't have Origin running when you launch the game.

Two things you can try:

I was already using Notepad++, and your second suggestion almost worked. The new name is visible in the main menu when you first load the save game but it remains unchanged in-game and as soon as you create a new save it also reverts back to the old name in the .das file. Seems I'll just have to deal with it :/ The OCD is gonna kill me. Thanks though!

Not exactly. It patches the .par file, and also allows you to run the game without launching Origin at all provided that Outcome is running. However, 1) some people need online features, which requires manually launching Origin after you launch the game, and 2)  some people are not comfortable using a third-party client. The pre-patched .par file may be preferable in those cases. However, a question remains: is DragonAgeInquisition.par the same for all installations, or is it customized based on your license? In the latter case, someone else's file will be of no use, you'll have to patch your own file using Outcome.

 

And no, setting the file to read-only won't do you any good. It still gets overwritten when you check for an update

Yesterday I've been using the first method with Outcome (Polish subs changed to English). The subtitles were perfect, but the game was suffering CTD during every cutscene, so my playthroughs varied from 5 to 20 minutes. My desk has dents in it from banging my head in frustration

Then the 2nd option appeared - I've moved origial files to a back up folder, then installed ones changed by kind soul from the forum. Run the game using Origins and I've also turned off "Ambient Occlusion" (tip from some thread - prevents crashes) and enjoyed a 4 HOUR NON-STOP GAMEPLAY !!! Multiple cutscenes passed with no CTD!!!

Today it was 5 hours, so for me second method works much better.

 

To all wonderful people from this thread, who helped us to play with English subs - may Maker bless you with smart children

I bought the game which supposed to be multilingual, but it appeared to be RU/PL. Because I didn't notice it when activating (simply didn't expect smth can be wrong with the key) and they can't refund active key which was bought from retailer. So I'm stuck with this version. I'm polish so It's not that big of a problem, but I hardly prefer to play games in english.

 

Since I'm new to Origin games, I have few questions:

1) how risky is to do this workaround?

2) I know people did it before with other games like battlefield, did EA banned anyone? Or they are are gentle about this for now?

3) In case of ban it's for multiplayer only? Or I'm banned from single player aswell?

 

In other words, how big risk vs reward it is? (the reward is I'm more comfortable to play it in english than polish). I know some people don't understand the language they have, so they have nothing to loose.

this will work and it is safe:

 

Okay, people, solution! (one that does not require using any third party launchers):

 

1. Download the en.toc and en.sb files from the link provided in this topic. 

2. Put them into the Data\Win32\loctext directory of your installation.

3. Rename the pl.sb and pl.toc (or ru.sb and ru.toc) to pl.sb.bak and pl.toc.bak (or ru, respectively).

4. Rename the en.sb and en.toc to pl.sb and pl.toc (or ru.sb and ru.toc).

5. Open the files with any editor that does not break binary data (Notepad++ will do nicely).

6. Replace all occurences of /en/ with /pl/ (or /ru/). 

 

Voila! English subtitles.

Unfortunately this is an EA/Origin issue. But lucky there are fixes.

I've used both methods without issues, but the one with the English files patched has a positive side effect - the fancy small caps copperplate font is replaced by a cleaner sans-serif one.

I'd expect Origin page to be true about supported languages. So just look at it from the IP of a region you want to buy it from.

Safest solution I found is to use a vpn so that Origin will believe you're living in an english speaking country and let you download the pack (because it's absolutely logical that the pack is available to people who don't need it, but not to those who need it, right ?).

 

Procedure is like this :

1. download and install a vpn software, several free softwares available (I used cyberghost)
2. launch the vpn, chose the country you want (USA or UK), wait for it to relocate your ip
3. start origin
4. download the english voice pack
5. close origin & the vpn (you can uninstall it since you won't need it anymore)
6. (not sure if necessary) open regedit --> HKEY_local_machine --> software --> wow6432node --> bioware --> dragon age : double click on "locale" and paste "en_EN"
7. relaunch origin
8. launch DA:I, go to options, audio, last options are subtitles and voices languages

The advantage of this method is that once you've downloaded the pack you can use origin like you always did, have access to achievements and play online. It shouldn't change all your games in english either, just DA:I (unchecked).

I'm using copied patched files.

 

Few seconds ago I did encounter a strange event. Firstly there were problems with synchronisation while launching the game and then after starting logos when you are asked to click any button, during connection, that is after it I got message about using 'add-ons'. Do you guys think it has something to do with patched files? It is the first time I encounter it.

It may had something to do with origin problems, there was a ddos attack or something like that, resulting in origin going down and being hardly connectable.

I can confirm that, EA\DA servers apparently had some issues, I've experienced them too, with my clean 'mexican' copy. Many disconnects and lags throughout the recent gameplay session.

Guys, you know what the problem with refunds is? It barely exists! You see, you can ask for refund if game is bought directly thru Origin (and I believe you have a limited time to do so anyway). However, you can't do s**t if you bought a boxed version, even tho, it is released by EA itself, in this case EA Poland (or Russia)

Which 'pack' are you're talking about?  If that's a free English 'DLC' it has NO TEXT, i'ts just an English  VO (had already been discussed many times and is a part of FAQ in the OP).

I agree that people in some countries should have the option to buy the English version of the game at US price. However, the Russian version itself shouldn't have English language support.

 

The problem with most Russian-only versions is that the Russian version is sold at a significantly lower price than the English versions. If the Russian versions have English language support by default, then a lot of people around the world will use VPN and buy the cheaper version.

 

Selling the English language pack as a DLC between the price of a Russian version and an English version is not a bad idea.

What pisses me off the most about not having option to use english text is being practically cut off from the online community. It's very hard to correlate english names of weapons, spells, locations and what nots if you're read and know them in a different language. Any online discussion is then quite frustrating

Russian version has ~equal price with Brazil, Mexico, Peru and some other regions that have it significantly cheaper than EU or UK. And all those versions ARE multilingual.

Would you kindly explain us, how exactly restricting languages in Russia&Poland prevents UK/EU citizens from using VPN to buy in Mexico or Peru?  Mexican version is something like 50% from a UK price, you know.

Well, I would say not. You can buy a European version just for 37eur on G2A, which is a lot cheaper than on Origin itself. I bought my Polish version (which supposed to be European, bad description) for a similar price at local retailer. My bad was I ignored info I was given while activating, thought it's just region information, so by doing so I lost my chance for refund, which would be easy if I didn't activate the key.

 

Russian regional version is logical one, since anyway they play it in Russian and get games a lot, I mean a lot cheaper.. But in Poland, really a lot of players prefer English version, including myself, but you can't buy such even from origin (maybe you can via proxy, not sure). And the thing is, Polish version on Origin is more expensive than European version on G2A, now tell me this is not a complete bullshit. I made a mistake buying at local reseller, than on G2A (price difference was like 2-3eur at most. So yeah, a lot of bullcrap going on here with those regions in EUROPE, meanwhile Russia is a separate market and they can and should have regional version..

 

Full English pack DLC would be a good idea.

The problem is, they are selling the RUS/POL version not only in Russia, but in other countries such as Ukraine where Russian isn't even the official language (and neither is Polish). I guess some people still think that Russia and (ex-)USSR are the same thing. And then there's the matter of choice: even in Russia a lot of people would prefer playing in the original language, because decent Russian localizations are few and far between (The Witcher series comes to mind here), and crappy translations from EA definitely don't fall within this category.
