I wonder if anyone else has a problem with surnames imposing certain limitations on the names you can select. Particularly, the surnames sound all as if they should be stressed on the second syllable. That means using one-syllable first names just doesn't work because the name sounds awkward. Also, you can't have a Qunari female name end on an "a" because that sounds awkward with "Adaar". I try to avoid two-syllable names because everyone has one, but good-sounding three-syllable names aren't that easy to come by. The elf is easiest because you can pronoune them "Lávellan" as easily as "Lavéllan" and the former actually sounds more interesting.

As a result, I come up with a dozen names I might want to use and I have to discard them just because they don't fit the surnames. it is frustrating.

In DAO and DA2 I didn't have these problems because "Amell" and "Tabris" are both stressed on the first syllable, which imposes fewer limitations.

I can't say I understand your name problem.

But even if you think it sounds kind of funny , the good news is you're never going to hear it in game. ;)

The problem is I want my names to sound good. That includes having certain rhythms and avoiding other rhythms, Surnames impose rhythms, some more than others, and that precludes certain first names from sounding good together with the surnames.

It doesn't matter that I never hear them in the game. I speak them in my mind.

eh, Not so picky when it comes to names, I have a few that I am giving to my fem characters, not matter what setting it is.

And I am far from being fluent in English but something like that dosn't sound much akward

But I am not used to listening to English speech on daily basis, so that may be only my impression.

Uh...never going to have that. My names must fit the setting and they must not take my mind to other settings. Add that constraint to "It must sound good" and naming my Inquisitors becomes rather difficult. I have two that work for now, but the qunari and the dwarf are still nameless.

I think its your personal problem and you should elaborate. For other languages speaking persons the favorable sounding for you will be unfavorable. It is just tied to native language and associations. My advice is to expand your "comfort zone" and trying to implant your character into its background, because you, honestly, can't demand to play "blank" character. Stick with the race that have most pleasant sounding for yourself.

Actually, I don't see the surnames as necessary. I can see why it's easier for Bioware to write a backstory for them, but ideally I should be able to name my character, first and last name together. It's not a big thing that I can't, but it makes naming more difficult, and I don't have an easy time with naming in the first place.

How so? I've only been playing around with names for a male human but most of the one-syllable first names sound just fine, f.i.: Blake Trevelyan, Dean Trevelyan, Luke Trevelyan, Kyle Trevelyan, Jace Trevelyan, Joel Trevelyan - just to name a few.

Now, I will probably settle for Aidan or Noah but I don't think any of the names above sound awkward.

A different way of perceiving things I guess. None of these would work for me. I also don't use real names unless they're present in the setting, but that's another problem.

You have a lot of self imposed limitations. Well, best of luck!

Doesn't bother me that much, any NPCs directly addressing me will say: Inquisitor.

Considering the default names include 'Herah Adaar' and 'Evelyn Trevelyan' I'd say the devs don't suffer the same issues about this as you.

I do feel some of your pain, though.

I have no problem with the names.

I like the name I gave my femquisitor and the surname.

I have no problems with figuring out may characters names because I just name them all after myself. The game won't call you by your first name in the first place so I don't spend anytime thinking about it. If I could I would leave the name space blank, but it has to be filled so why not fill it with your own name? That's how I see it anyway.

You don't love it, you are frustrated because of some thread you don't even have to read. And that's something I love.

The pain of all of you "this again"/"petty problem" people, is so sweet.

Carry on.

I think names ending in A with Adaar sound fine. My first playthrough will be someone called 'Basra Adaar'.

I know time is money but just once I wish bioware would let us pick some names that the chracters can say just give us three name and have those names for each race

Fixed surnames are necessarily static so that the game can reference your character in ways other than your official titles, particularly among family and friends.

As a human you are from the noble lineage of Trevalyan. This will likely be mentioned among the noble circles.

As an elf you are from clan Levallan. It goes without saying that the clan will be mentioned by name.

As a dwarf you are from the crime family Cadash. Your name carries weight in the underground.

Qunari is the only one that still has unknown relevance, though I expect we will see in the game.

So in essence they are needed for context. Any other method would be unnecessarily convoluted.

So as frustrating as this may be for you, this is still a game with necessary limitations.

They are necessary, because from what we've heard background is more than just text, and we'll actually encounter people related to our background in the game. If you make a dwarf, you are a Cadash, and when you encounter people connected to your background (family, rivals, what have you) they will themselves be called such and will likely call you that as well. If you could make up your own last name, there would be a disconnect between the name you created and the name you actually have.
