Impressions from reviewers thus far have been very positive, with one saying it's already a lock for his GOTY. That being said we don't know how good reviewers as a whole think it is and they will probably be playing right up to embargo.

Right now the two leading contenders are Dark Souls 2 and Bayonetta 2. Like or hate Metacritic, it does do a pretty good job predicting the landscape of the GOTY awards, and those two are the only big names sitting at 90+. I don't expect Dark Souls 2 to dominate because although it reviewed well, it doesn't do anything really different than Dark Souls, and reviewers tend to like fresh narratives for GOTY.

Both Bayonetta 2 and DA: I have narratives reviewers can work with. The former was only possible because Nintendo funded it, and it represents something of a revival for Nintendo and the Wii U. DA: I will be seen as a return to unmitigated glory for BioWare (despite ME3 sitting pretty at 93 Metacritic and DA2 at  a respectable 82, reviewers tend to be cowardly when their initial opinion conflicts with the prevailing hardcore demographic narrative). Bayonetta 2 will have a better showing amongst critics whereas I expect DA: I to win more fan awards, mainly due to one being on the Wii U and the other virtually everything except the Wii U.

Well I hope that reviewers don't just play 6 hours and do a review. I think they need to play the game to the finish and that will take time. Plus there is over a hundred hours of gameplay. Plus you got the MP portion that will provide longevity to the game.

Bayonetta 2 will most likely get Best Nintendo action game of the year award. Bayonetta just doesn't have the scope that Dragon Age Inquisition will offer. Exploration, character development, multiple characters. Level designs etc

While true all of those (with the exception of level design) are indicative of good RPG design, whereas Bayonetta 2 is a character action game, and has been praised by several as the perfection of many character action game traits. If reviewers think it is indeed the best character action game of all-time, then that gives it yet another narrative, whereas there's virtually no chance of DA: I being seen as the best RPG of all-time due to all the Infinity Engine baggage that comes with the statement.

I'll have to play the game - and play it to the end - in order to make that call, but things are looking good from here.

I think Destiny is still in major contention.  Activision recently announced they 9.5 million registered accounts which on average log 3 hours every day.  That's a MASSIVE success.

Advanced Warfare is turning almost double the amount of profit it was expected to make too.

So GOTY is basically a popularity contest?

When has GOTY never been a popularity contest? I haven't seen anything that won Game of the Year I personally liked, ever. To me it seems like the ones that get it sell lots of copies and are popular games.

These are the games the Escapist is including in their GoTY contest, so I assume it's a pretty decent list of what could be considered "the contenders."

Alien: Isolation
Bayonetta 2
Dark Souls II
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Destiny
Titanfall
Sunset Overdrive
Watch Dogs
Super Smash Bros. (3DS)
Hearthstone
Mario Kart 8
FarCry 4
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Assassin's Creed Unity

Will probably enjoy DA:I a lot when it releases (wouldn't be here otherwise) but there is no way it's better than Bayonetta 2. That game is perfection.

It has a good chance but I wouldn't guarantee yes for sure. I would give it RPG of the year.

But it is only played on 1 platform. Nintendo Wii. Maybe if it was on multiply platforms then it should be considered.

So? Maybe Dragon age will win the "GOTY which was published on at least two platforms awards", Bayonetta 2 will take the rest. Hopefully Dragon age secures the second place behind Bayo though.

Do you know what won the most GOTY awards last year? The last of us. Do you know how many platforms it was on? One.

I'd be surprised if it never won 1 of them considering for the most part the crap we have been shoveled

There are a lot of good contenders:

Shadow of Morder

GTA 5 (next gen)

Far Cry 4

Assassins Creed Unity

Alien - Isolation

If you factor in Indie Games:

The Binding of Isaac - Rebirth

Age of Wonders 3

Endless Legend

So as much as i am looking forward to DAI i wouldn't build that trophy case just yet.

I'd say DAI certainly has a realistic shot at being in the mix. Mordor seems like the incumbent at the moment, and that feels like a very beatable GOTY to me.

Sidenote: the dwarf from Mordor would make a great DA companion.

I can't comment on it's quality until I have actually played the game, but no game that has come out so far in 2014 has really impressed me.

Okay GTA 5 next gen is not going to be a game of the year contender since it came out last year.and received Game of the Year last year.

Alien isolation is a great game...

watch Angry Joe's review of it, he brings up a lot of excellent points about why the game isn't amazing. In summation, the first half of the game is great but once you are given a flamethrower it goes down hill.

I am hoping this will turn out to be a great game.  But I cannot say GOTY until I've finished it.

Heck, I'm still impressed with the re-release of The Last of Us right now.  :)

Nobody knows how good Far Cry 4 and Assassin's Creed: Unity are going to be just yet. We might get another Black Flag situation and find Unity on many GOTY lists. And if all goes as planned, I'll be picking up Dragon Age and Far Cry on the same day. :)

W:TNO... OOT... FF7... WTF???

Also, I'm not sure how you can nominate a game for GOTY, when it comes out late in the year. The earlier games of the calendar year have already been judged and have shown their value (or lack thereof). You can't very well call it a fair assessment when "TNKotB" suddenly shows up with all the (apparent) goodies. It would be a more fair judgment (imo) to judge DA:I amongst the games of 2015. In this case, I think it might face heavy competition from W3:TWH... Amongst others. :D *\o/*

Wasnt skyrim GOTY back in 2011? When it was released in mid november like DAI will be? Or is that just a fabricated memory of mine?

Regardless, I think this is a strong year for vgs so id be surprised if it won, but I do think its a definite contender
