Please, do not feel offended right away. That article just full of interesting facts among those "ignorance" measurements, like rate of unemployment, for example.

http://www.workopoli...D=721:19L:14946

Here, on example of Canada:

Everything we think we know is wrong

  • Canadians surveyed think that 35% of the population of this country are immigrants. It’s actually only 21%.
  • We believe that 49% of the population self-identify as being Christians. In reality many more people – 69% actually do.
  • Conversely we think that 20% of the people here are Muslim, but they really make up just 2% of the Canadian population.
  • We also think that there are a lot more teen pregnancies than actually occur. Survey respondents said that 15% of girls aged 15-19 years old give birth each year. Only 1% actually do.
  • We think that the population is much older than it actually is as well. Canadians guessed that 39% of the population was over 65 years old. In reality it’s just 14%.
  • We also think fewer Canadians vote in national elections than actually do. Respondents said that 51% of the eligible population voted in the last federal election. It was 61%.
  • Participants said that 23% of the population is unemployed and looking for work. It’s actually just under 7%.

This is interesting, I actually expected the U.S. to place higher.

We can't settle for second place. Gotta aim to be first.

I was once told that Nova Scotia (where I live) had the highest teen pregnancy rate in the country. Judging by the amount of kids with kids around here, I'd believe that 1% of all Canadians is in fact from my town.

As if 1000 (let alone 500) people were even close to give a representative median for entire nations with populations in the tens of millions.

Nothing but sensationalist blabbering.

The poll also fails to reveal the most ignorant countries in the world, because research was only conducted in 14 of them. There are 195 countries in the world today.

Then, what is a mathematically appropriate sample size in this situation?

Seems like a pretty useless index. People are off on their estimations, wow!

There was a story 2 or 3 years ago, about how Americans thought 1/4 of the population is gay even though the actual amount is more like 2-4%. Media probably played a huge role in that perception.

Most ignorant countries is also a pretty harsh name given that they only polled in 14 countries, all but two of which were Western.

Because most people get their information from the media or from ear to ear. It's nothing surprising. Although it a bit nitpicking. We can't be educated in everything.

People often don't know exact percentages and overestimate on the bad things.

I'm not entirely convinced we needed a survey to figure that out.

How accurate do you want to be?

I certainly can't see any potential for misunderstandings.

Now to spam the "report" button...  :police:

(Note: Above was a joke... just in case.)
