I'm having the same problem, but I'm on a notebook with 64-bit Vista. What "fix" did you find?

"I was having these General Protection Fault crashes like crazy for the last day, and the game was unplayable. I tried the fix mentioned in this thread: Click Here

and it seemed to work. In AddRemove Programs in the Control Panel I found the program called OpenAL, and after removing it the game plays fine now with no crashes/no more General Protection Faults. The game still hangs when loading, and I am getting muddy sound quality right now, but at least it's playable at this point...now to just fix my muddy sound issues."

Display Memory: 896.0 MB
Current Mode: 1920 x 1080 (32 bit) (60Hz)

The
card is updated to latest drivers, also it will GPF right at the start
of the BIOWARE intro movie consistently. So far I was able to get it
working through uninstalling/reinstalling the game through steam and
verifying the files, however it started happening again right after I
updated windows. I have set AVG also to exclude the game as well and it
will still fault.

It seems restarting my system gets it to GPF again and again after I reinstall it. So basically the situation is, uninstall the game and remove everything but the saves in the my documents. Restart, then reinstall the game, the game will run normally UNTIL I restart the computer. Once that happens the next time I run the game it will GPF. My programmer friend looked at the log and said that some games just will not like certain cards no matter what you do maybe it has something to do with the GTX line of Nvidia cards. At this point other than uninstalling/reinstalling constantly I am stumped.

I wish someone would address this. The problem was fixed a year ago and then cropped up again when nVidia updated its drivers, and has been pending for the last 11 months. I was hoping that the release of the new game would encourage them to fix this, since it's a real showstopper.

If it happened wehn Nvidia updated their drivers, then the blame most likely lays at Nvidia.

I don't have this issue with my ATI card.

As for the original poster, piracy can lead to all kinds of issues and doesn't buy you support. Good luck.

Well I got mine to work. All I had to do was redownload and install the game using D2D's download manager.

To everyone else: TweakGuides.com had some info on the fault.

"General Protection Faults: 'General Protection Fault' (GPF), 'Critical Error' or other crashes including general Crashes to Desktop (CTDs) are present in all games based on the Unreal Engine stretching back to the original Unreal game released in 1999, as well as various versions of Unreal Tournament. Essentially it is not a new phenomenon, there is no single specific cause, it is generally caused by an overstressed system becoming unstable. It's not going to get 'patched' out of the game, since it is almost always a symptom of other problems, not a bug in itself. There are ways to minimize or prevent it - GPF crashes are almost always related to sub-optimal system conditions such as one or more of the following: overclocked and/or overheating systems; poorly installed and/or outdated drivers; and systems with various unnecessary programs running in the background. By running through the TweakGuides Tweaking Companion in detail you will be able to fix these issues once and for all - and note that proper optimization fixes stability in many games, not just Mass Effect. Trust me when I say there is no magic fix, and no patch will ever fully resolve it. I've been dealing with this type of error for almost ten years, and the only solid solution ever found has been to optimize your entire machine. I personally have not experienced a GPF in over four years in a range of Unreal Engine-based games, and many hours of testing Mass Effect under various circumstances."

That's not all that helpful, maybe, but there's a good chance that the problem is on your end. Good luck making it work!

Nice find, Cerbo. That's an awesome site, by the way.

His conclusions are standard troubleshooting:

* Never overclock

* Ensure you aren't overheating

* ALways have the latest BIOS, drivers, patches, etc.

* Always make sure the OS is up to date.

Well status update, at first I tried this solution from this thread: http://tinyurl.com/ya8c8ec with deleting the local shaders and the cofigs other than BIOInput.

It seemed to work at first since I was able to play without reinstalling. The bad news is that its now faulting again and it was just like clockwork. As soon as I shut my system down went to sleep, woke up BAM GPF. Now even that one fix I attempted isn't working. No idea how to update the BIOS or whether that will even work, tried updating to the latest drivers and was sure to uninstall the drivers first and the OS is up to date. Something ain't right...

It's not only with Nvidia cards. I have a ATI radeon and i have been getting de GPF problem lately. It used to play fine (only the freezing /100% CPU bug every 1-2hour or so). I got the game through steam. The only modification i did was i updated my Microsoft Visual C++ to the latest version.

Does anyone know how to solve the problem?

I used to have this issue, the way that seemed to work for me was to delete the bioengine.ini file, it automatically creates a new one when you go in the game, but not had any GPF faults during a playthrough when did that. I had to do it before everytime I went to play it though.

hey sir Ulrich Von lichenstien

Thx a lot for your help, it works now!!! Now i just wanted to know 3 more things

1) i downloaded the game from steam, is it patched up to 1.02 automatically ? (how do i check my version of the game

2) Do i have to delete the bioengine.ini file everytime i try to play the game?

3) How to solve the 100% CPU freeze?

I've tried everything bioware suggests, I close all background processes, I have my computer set for best performance, I have 6g of ram, my graphics card is well over the minimum as is my processor and sound card, all my drivers are up to date, I close all background processes I can before playing. None of this has helped so I tried deleting bioengine.ini but that's not helping either... This just sucks... Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Same issues here. I once played through Mass Effect twice about a year ago. Reinstalled the game and patched to play through again to build up the save files and purchases ME2. GPF seems you happen randomly. Tried deleting bioengine.ini to no avail. Trying the uninstall of OpenAL to see if that works.

One (incomplete) complaint was all you needed.  The rest are all SPAM.  And all in the wrong forum.  This is the ME-2 forum, not ME-1.

Chris Priestley's Fill in the blanks instructions:

If you don’t find a similar problem already reported, consider starting a new thread. Note that most of this information can be obtained by using the game’s Configuration Utility which is available by pressing the [Configure] button from the game’s launcher:

1.      Which Game Are You Playing (Can be skipped over if it's ME-2)

  a.      Since this forum is (WAS) for both ME1 (PC) and ME2 (PC) it’s important (previously it was) to identify which product is experiencing the problem. (That situation in't true any longer, however, please see item 1-b, below.)

  b.     Media: physical disk or digital download (and which vendor)

  c.      Configuration Utility | Game Tab

    * Version Information: MassEffect2.EXE

2.      System Details

  a.      Configuration Utility | Summary Tab

    * Processor / Core Speed / RAM

    * Display Adapter / VRAM / Driver Version (just saying "latest drivers" doesn't help)

    * Sound Adapter / Driver Version

  b.     Configuration Utility | Platform Tab

    * Operating System (& service pack if applicable)

    * Direct X Version

3.      Problem Details

  a.      When it comes to problem details, think about the five basic questions: Who? What? When? Where?  Why? Okay, so “Who?” doesn’t really apply here, but the others do.

  b.     What? What is the nature problem that you’re seeing?

  c.      When? When does the problem occur? Every time you engage in a particular action or only after so many hours of play?

  d.     Where? Where does the problem occur? Is the problem localized to a particular planet or does it occur everywhere?

  e.     Why? As much as possible, can you isolate the problem to a specific set of steps?

If you follow these guidelines, and provide the requested information when posting, it will increase the likelihood that someone will be able to help you diagnose the problem and find a solution.

Please report issues, after checking these steps, in new threads.

P. S.  Please use every day business style punctuation and spelling.  Solid blocks of unbroken text are ignored, as is foolish TM-style misspelled & unintelligible gibberish.

Gorth Alpha,

You are very rude, and your elitist attitude is rather annoying. If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't respond at all. Stop acting as if you own the forums.

LoL. Aww, you are the biggest forum troll I have ever seen, your last reply to this thread was four months ago. Why don't you just keep your mouth shut unless you have some actual advice to give to someone instead of belittling them.
