I don't hate Vivienne, yet. But I think, or I will deny her as inquisition member, or accept her and then she will spend her time mostly in Skyhold in funny clothes and my inq will keep her eyes on her. She was too calm in that trailer when breach happened. Almost like she was expecting it.Brrrrrr

The sassy black woman who doesn't need a man, for starters.

Frankly from what I've seen I believe I'll enjoy her, but there's still the fear that she'll be stereotypically written.

It is simply possible that she already had one outside the inquisition.

I haven't play the game yet so it's hard to judge with only a few minutes trailers and such. The only thing that put her on negative side is that it's clearly stated by BW that she has her own agenda. I don't need another Anders. And apparently she hates Cole. Well, thats all to be said. If she proves to be what I imagine she would be, she'll stay in Skyhold. I mean, I really love Dorian and Solas from what little videos I saw. Who need a third mage in a party? Especially my first PT will be a mage.

My fear is that she's going to be very stereotypical.

Nothing against you but I really hate this joke/stereotype. Not offended the joke of "i'm a black woman who don't need no man" is just played out anywho.

I think Vivienne is more graceful than actually sassy, also are we going to associate every black character that wants to be independent as this? Surely this cannot be what the writers were going for.

I haven't been excited for a character for this long! I'm going to talk control and talk the **** out of her.

She will be like "bruh I understand you are trying to strike up a conversation and **** but I don't know you like that"

Oh don't get me wrong, the thought of her having someone outside the Inquisition as a romantic interest has crossed my mind. But that's all conjecture. At this point, we just don't know.

I think it would've been better for her to have been a romance option, because I've seen and heard many people (black fans mainly) talk of how black women basically get the really short end of the stick.

From a representation standpoint it would've been better, not a "MY PC DESERVES EVERYTHING OUT THERE"

It's been said she always has a venomous retort at the ready for a person, so snark is a definite aspect of who she is. Which isn't to say it's all she is. As with all things, devil is in the details and I (unlike many) will wait and see if she'll be stereotypical or not, a good character or not, etc. Better to be pessimistic and fearful and then be surprised happily then be overly optimistic and then go "WELL **** YOU YOU ASSHATS".

Admittedly, such discussions are not within my skill-set. I'm a white dude. I only have a barebones understanding of what could go wrong.

Okay, here is a black perspective. I do not see anything stereo-typically wrong about Vivienne. I actually like the way they have handled her. I understand what you are saying though and I am not attacking you for it btw.

Edit : Also Just because you white doesn't mean your opinion is invalid  :P

I still dont see why she couldn't be a love interest. Then again after reflecting on what Bioware did to Jacob in Mass Effect 2 and 3 maybe thats a good thing. I mean c'mon everybody on the team had parental issues in ME2, but Jacob had the stereotypical absentee bad black father bullshit going on and to top it off he cheats on Shep and inpregnates another women if you romance him. Talk about stereotypical.

She just has a superiority complex.

I don't feel anything towards her, until i meet her, and even then, it's not the dismissive or sassy profile i will find interesting. That would just be comic relief.

I'm more interested in her agenda.

They said that reason why she is not romance option has to do something with her hidden agenda

Could be lots of things...or mabye she has LI...mabye she is asexual lol it wouldn't be that strange...perhaps something from her past...or perhaps she is Flemeth or Flemeth's another daughter(it's not like Morrigan would be her only one...mabye she raised another one)... or if you are typical "panic at 'hidden agenda'" word then mabye she will just backstab you  :police:

She seems really arrogant and I'm afraid that's what it's going to make me dislike her and I can see my Inquisitor not agreeing with her most of the time. It doesn't help that I absolutely love Solas and Dorian so they will most likely be in my party all the time. I'll still give her a chance though, but I doubt it will help. Also, her hidden agenda makes me nervous. Interested, but nervous.

You know, if a character has got a strong enough feeling to merit such a reaction even prior to the release date, then the DA team did what they wanted to  I think the worst thing for the writers is a character that the player feels almost nothing for.  According to David Gaider at GDC last year, Genn from NWN was such a character.  The only reason why I can even member Genn's name off of the top of my head is because I was talking about him with a poster yesterday.   :P

If you love Vivienne, Mary Kirby won.  If you hate Vivienne, Mary Kirby won.

I know that writers in general don't always set out to make likeable characters.  I think they like interesting characters that the fans will either grow to love or hate.  I even conjecture that they find threads like this amusing.  You're talking about our lovely mage, and you're passionate in your negative feelings for her.  Hate's quite the strong word, after all.

Seems to me Mary accomplished her goal with Vivienne.   ;)

I disagree.  People hating characters before even getting to know the character means they will likely not even bother with them in the first place.  To the point they refuse to recruit them, tell them to leave right away or perhaps keep them around long enough to find a way to kill them.  That is not in any way a success for any writer.  They don't want to make companions that people hate.  It's a complete failure on their part if that's the case.

I personally don't like Iron Bull, when it comes time to meet him in game and recruit him, if he doesn't impress me right away I will likely say no thanks to him and move on my way.  That isn't a win for his writer at all.

It's just something about the way she walks around, her facial gestures and everything.

She's one of those characters you hope you can Sparta kick off the hold.... and then revive using necromancy just to do it again.

Anyone else feel the same way ._.?

Not that strongly (I don't kill companions - I might not take them along if I don't like them  (except for their companion-quests and other quests they might be involved in), but killing them and denying myself content just because I am too pig-headed to accept that not all people agree with me (and my characters, as they are me...don't really roleplay, the characters are my avatar, not fully thought out people with their own personality that do things I never would - like in DA:O sacrificing Lothering or killing the Dalish or using the Right on the circle...just can't, I am not and *******!) is not something I do (I thought about getting rid of Cullen (don't like templars - and those that are pro-right of annulment even less), but I don't think you can and getting rid of our spirit friend (forgot the name), because the later one for me is only a murderer (but he might be usefull...who knows))

greetings LAX

From what I've seen, I don't really like her. In all her marketing material - that video that was just released, her letter to the ambasador - she's come off as really arrogant and condescending. There's nothing wrong with having that as a character, it's just not the sort of person I'd personally get along with.

I have limited my exposure to companion information, but I did watch the trailer with Vivienne. Personally, I am very much looking forward to having her around.

For all the anti hate people, someday that hate might be the only thing that's keeping you alive.

Like say, if after being savagely beaten by a sasquatch until nearly every bone in your body is broken. It grows tired of playing hacky sack with your crippled form and leaves. With all of your might you try but can't move. Fortune smiles when you notice that the vertabrae above your clavicle is unscathed, and are lying face down too. Using your chin you inch back down the forest trail you traveled. During the crawl you'd normally experience blackouts from all the pain but your hatred is what's keeping you focused. To keep you going you recall not only the savage beating you suffered, but also your unfaithful spouse, meth addict sibling, cheap boss, bills, debt, and unfulfilled dreams. By harnessing all that hatred you repelled any and all predators, and miraculously sustained yourself during the 7km 36hr long crawl. Thanks to that very same hatred you made it to the evac copter and to safety.

Think about it?

I don't hate Vivienne, but if she thinks to use my Inquisition to advance her career, she has another thing coming. I highly doubt she will be spending much time in my party, so I hope she enjoys her little spot in Skyhold, because that's where she will most likely be staying.

That was unique.   :P

If such a bizarre and inexplicable set of circumstances where to occur, I'll make sure to tell you if hate kept me alive.  Or if it was the love of my husband and the overwhelming desire to see him again.  ;)

Nah you'll most definately need to harness hatred in the above situation. Love won't stop the critters from preying on you, m'kay.
